Roxi was our Borzoi. She wandered into our backyard as a young pup. We checked all around for ‘lost puppy’ notes and there were none. She was ours! At that stage, She looked like an exceptionally beautiful German shepherd. She lengthened into Borzoi-Afghan appearance as she matured. She lived 12 years and we compare all dogs to her. She ran greyhound-fast all over our small acreage. Got on with virtually everyone including small kids. Very sweet temperament, but when something was out of order, like a hawk flying over our hen yard, or if she treed a raccoon, she barked like a Timberwolf. (A great bark for a country pooch.) What a dog! She was the finest dog we ever had.

I've a few different breeds of dogs in my life, my Borzoi was by far my favorite. My guy was abnormally large for his breed, closer to a Irish Wolfhound in height and weight. My vet said he was the largest Borzoi he'd ever seen. Took him with me on walks, also exercised him with my bicycle and every early morning he looked forward to accompanying me through our neighborhood running alongside my vehicle for a long run. I once clocked him at over 45 mph, very impressive while also graceful. Very much a loving family dog. When not exercising in a controlled environment it is important to keep a Borzoi on a leash as they are typical sight hounds and will run after what they perceive as prey. Borzoi's tend to be fearless towards other animals, but usually friendly towards non threatening humans.

I had a Russian Import back in Switzerland in the mid 70;s,however, Alexandra Vera Nagayka (called Saha), she was a real Aristocrat in her behavior. Contrary to your comment, she was a very brave and alert watch dog. In example, she would let some one into the house, but never let this person out again with out my approval. She was fixed to me and other family members like my wife could not command her. We had also a Siamese cat kitten who would walk away from the house to explore, she would let it happen until a certain distance, then she would pick up the kitten with her fangs and bring her back. One morning we have spotted some blood on the terrace, it seams that she surprised a burglar. We did not hear anything and the blood sample test showed it was human blood. Fortunately, she always could runn freely with no restrictions and even hunt rabbits, which she enjoyed very much, because she was allowed to eat them. :-)

I'm sorry to note some mistakes in your video. 1. Not all the pictures u use are borzoi's, you have some silken windhounds in them. (for example 2.55 and 3.46) wich are a crossbreed with borzoi but not the actual borzoi breed. They are smaller but look a lot like them. 2. Borzoi are not hunting by smell, they are sighthounds. They will chase a prey when it catches their eye. Be it a rabbit, cat or even an other small dog.

Aha!!! The Borzoi also known as Russian Wolfhound. I think very few people know the whole backstory of WHY it’s among the rarest breeds in the world right now. Because the Bolsheviks killed however many of them they could get their hands on during the so-called “revolution.” The Borzoi were first bred by the European aristocracy in the seventeenth century as a hunting pack hound, and for the longest time the only way to acquire one was to receive one as a gift from the Czar. You could not buy them because one could not sell them. This lent Borzoi the unfortunate image of an aristocratic pet. So when the hammer-and-sickle terrorists took over the regime and went on a murderous rampage through the country, it was curtain time for anything that seemed “rich,” humans and animals alike. In sum, the Communists almost killed out a breed of dogs because it made them feel inferior.

That's pretty weird that in English it is called Borzoi, because the right name in Russian is "борзая" (Borzaya). All nouns in Russian have such grammar cathegory as gender. The word "dog" - "собака" is of female gender, so the ending should be "-aya" - русская борзая собака. Shame on translator who have done his work so bad in the past...
