The range is up to 250 km in summertime and about 170-180 in wintertime, maybe less according to temperature. Thanks to TeslaBjorn and his thoroughly reallife-tests i got this car. I did consider to get an IONIQ electric 3 years ago partly because of your reports and did not regret it. Even if it‘s not a perfect car, especially if it comes to snowcovered mountain roads for it‘s light front. I enjoy driving it every day. I really thank you for your videos, not just the ones about Ioniq.

Thanks for your great videos on electric cars! You inspired me to buy an Ioniq 28 kW, though it's 2021. The car is very efficient and nice to drive. The last summer I kept the consumption around 100 Wh/km ( in Sweden we got plenty of 80 km/h highways), with a range around 230-250 km. Now in winter however the range has dropped dramatically. This week, with temperature around -10°C, the range is between 130 km ( with the heater on and 21°C in the cabin) and 190 km ( without heater on, though that gets unbearable cold). Still, the car gets the job done taking me to work and back home, a trip of 100 km in total.

Hi Bjorn , enjoyed the video . I live in London , and had my Ioniq a week now . I have officially achieved with a mixture of motorway , A & B roads and City driving 135 miles / 217 km with approximately 15% of charge remaining in each instance . the recharge time is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours from a 7.2 KW home charger . This car is absolutely brilliant and will not disappoint . I thoroughly recommend any other interested parties to test drive and see for yourself . Keep up the blogs

The inefficient packaging is because of space for gas engine for the other Ioniq models. Still with this pricing is nice & I like how Hyundai is giving buyers a choice of Hybrid, Plug in & EV. I can't wait to test one in North America.

They're not "giving buyers a choice." They're doing what they can to slow walk the adoption of EVs so they keep making profits off of maintenance. By giving 3 options they can trick lots of buyers into thinking that the EV is more expensive based on the sticker price. Many buyers won't factor in the higher cost of gas and maintenance on ICE vehicles.

A bit late to the party, but I had to write a comment. Thank You very much for the video. I was at a car dealer today and tested Ioniq Electric with a 1000km on the odometer. As I've driven only sluggish diesels last 4 years, driving in eco mode sure gave it that diesel engine whiplash effect. Put it into sport mode and the car jumps like someone hit it with a whip! I think I'm gonna go and pick it up tomorrow. Mostly thanks to Your real life review of the car. I mean, You show us mortals how it works to travel with an electric car. You demistify the entire concept and it brings the owning of an electric car so much closer and more "normal". Thank You once again.

@khan-hg6em8 жыл бұрын
yes a 60kw on this will put other EVs on fire lol, but as ioniq is on budget i guess so they put a smaller battery in it, price will increase if its a 60kw pack, but it shall surely improve with time as batteries are getting cheaper, 1 v important thing the car has addressed is the efficiency.which is important for evs too, as now most are eyeing on range ,some years later then efficiency will be addressed so they made it efficient right from day 1,, well done ioniq/.

Thanks a lot for the video Bjorn. I think the lack of usage of motor trunk is because Ioniq is a platform for 3 versions: electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. So you have more space in electric version, because the car don't need so much space for stuffs like motor cooler, starter, pumps for cooling water etc.

I have watched all of them several times, first for information but later also as I enjoyed them so much. This one in particular finally made me decide to swap my Volvo XC70 for a Ioniq Electric about a week ago. So far I am very happy with the car, and as you point out it is very efficient. I have a consumption of about 12.5 kWh/100km although about 2/3 of my daily 135km driving is on motorway at 110 km/h, amazing. Please keep testing new EVs if possible! Hello Björn, Have you ever driven a Kia Soul EV. The Ioniq has its technique yes of the soul. Just keep the newer development stage. Kia belongs to Hyundai. @francisgaliegue66458 жыл бұрын
Just one thing about the energy consumption... It is in fact better to talk about kWh/100 km vs Wh/km, it is only a factor of 10. For instance, 200 Wh/km is 20 kWh/100 km. And in the EU in general we are used to talking xxx/100 km. What is more, if you take into account that basically a litre of petrol/diesel is more or less 10 kWh, you can make a quick parallel: if your ICE car consumes 6 l/100 km (which is quite a nice feat for an ICE vehicule) it is in fact equivalent to 60 kWh/100 km... And there you start to see how much more efficient an EV is, even a fully loaded Tesla Model X P90D towing a 1+ ton charge :)
@bjornnyland8 жыл бұрын
Tesla uses Wh/km. Most of my followers are used to this number. It's far easier to use when calculating energy usage. For example: You have a consumption of 200 Wh/km and drive 80 km. What is your total consumption? Answer: 200 Wh/km * 80 km = 16 kWh Now the more complicated: 20 kWh/100 km * 80 km / 100 = 16 kWh The EU general is based on fossil car usage. Why stick to the old and outdated measurement?
@francisgaliegue66458 жыл бұрын
Bjørn Nyland this is not a question of old or outdated; and you'll have noticed with the EVs you have driven that every single one of them is using kWh/100 km to display their energy usage. Plus, conversion to Wh/km is really easy, it's just a factor of 10... And a factor of 10 the other way to get a roughly equivalent l/100 km of fossil fuels. Plus, humans have trouble with big numbers, otherwise we would probably be using joules per meter :p
@bjornnyland8 жыл бұрын
Francis Galiegue I disagree. An integer number is easier to use than a float number with a weird unit. 169 Wh/km 16.9 kWh/100 km You tell me what's easiest and most intuitive.
@francisgaliegue66458 жыл бұрын
Bjørn Nyland it's not a "weird unit", it's a direct transposition of what is used in the automotive world to quantify the energy usage of vehicles! Plus, as I said, since a litre of fossil fuel is basically 10 kWh, it gives a pretty direct parallel to fossil cars.
@bjornnyland8 жыл бұрын
Francis Galiegue What is clear here is that we don't agree. Let me remind you again that my viewers are mainly Tesla followers. So I will stick to Wh/km.

Kia and Hyundai specify usable battery capacity in their documentation. Unlike the Japanese manufacturers who specify total battery capacity. Unfortunately they haven't imported these to Iceland yet and they don't seem to be able to answer any questions about time and price, so I'm hoping I could just go over Norway and buy one ASAP. I wonder if you could give me some advice about buying in Norway, Do you know any websites I could search for one on sale in Norway, or any car dealers that may still stock this model? Like Norway, Iceland has 0% VAT and 0% import tax on fully electrics, so Norway seems to be the easies place for me to buy.

Do you have an explanation for the long winter claimed range of the Hyundai Ioniq? At 18:07 the range is 179 km at 92 % charge in winter Typical range for Kia Soul EV is predicted range of 120 km at 100% at 0 C with 27kWh battery (160 - 180 km in summer) Leaf is similarly 25% less in winter Both are before losses due to cabin heat Does Ioniq have liquid battery management or some other tech that i sthe explanation for much longer cold weather range?
@bjornnyland8 жыл бұрын
All the electric cars except for Tesla uses the last X km to estimate range left. If the last leg had low consumption, a high range will show. If the last leg had high consumption, a low range will show. Ioniq has liquid cooled battery similar to Tesla. And just like Tesla, excessive heat from the battery (and motor too, I believe) is diverted to heat up the cabin. Nissan Leaf doesn't have this. Leaf only has a passive heating. That's why the battery overheated during my test: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJeTgX2tg9iZnKc
@jhindson888 жыл бұрын
In spite of previous trip efficiency, I have never seen or heard of a Kia predicted range above 120 km at 0 C. And a similar 25-30% loss with Leaf. If the Ioniq (or any EV with liquid battery management) can get 170 km plus with a 28 kWh battery then it appears to be a no-brainer for climates like ours (British Columbia)
@bjornnyland8 жыл бұрын
Jim Gord Ioniq's CdA is outstanding compared to SoulEV an Leaf. That in combination of better thermal management and utilization is probably why Ioniq does it so well in winter.

There is so much empty space under the hood because the car is also offered as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. so they need the space to fit in the combustion engine. same like the e-golf. the i3 on the other hand is only offered as a electric car, so they could package the whole thing more efficient.

coasting is actually detrimental to your total eco level unless the battery is fully charged. A clever charging system will be putting that back into your battery and holding you to the cruise control speed, all the while also reducing break pad wear.

Jean-Pierre White I agree regen is not 100% efficient, probably 40-60% depending on charge level but with coasting down hill you will have to ride the brakes (sorry for earlier misspelling) (at a cost) and regen saves the brakes as well as topping up charge. The on-board electronics is always using so you can at least recover that. BMW did research into drive economics on petrol (ICE) cars and found that coasting was worse than not. I have looked at it and if I down shift (ICE) and stay in gear my fuel consumption falls to zero (and I save brakes) where as if I coast I use 1.2lphr (and use brakes). I don't own a hybrid yet but hope to later in the year and I will post my experience.

Jean-Pierre White I think you've misread what I'm saying. You ride the brakes when you are going faster than legal and the lesser gear doesn't help. As I mentioned I don't have a hybrid, and I occasionally have the choice of going down in 3rd gear at 80kph (6 spd gear box) or 60kph in 2nd with the engine revving like crazy where the speed limit is 70kph. I choose 3rd gear and hit the breaks for a couple of seconds every 10 or so in those situations. On the electronics losses in a hybrid, sure they're parasitic, but if you have a full battery and are coasting down hill not using regen will give you a drain of battery when the petrol motor is off, where as regen will avoid that parasitic loss. That's what I was saying.

etmax1 Even in coast mode, gently applying the brakes will use full regen braking anyway. If you brake harder than the car can do through regen braking, only then will the real brakes kick in! It's not like ICE cars where any braking engages the brakes.

Thanks for that, not not having one limits what I know. My definition of coasting is somewhat different.

Hey Bjørn. what is the name of the app you use in the movie. Mikkel

Is it possible to calculate accumulated elevation increase and decrease separately, not just the direerence of start and end in elevation? For example, if you go up on the hill and then down and end up on the same elevation, the height of the hill would add both to the increase and decrease. Regen does not recuperate all of the energy, unfortunately.

Hey Bjørn, does the Hyundai Ioniq electric have preconditioning/preheating ? Via an app or some other way? Thanks keep up the good work.
@bjornnyland8 жыл бұрын
icedaddy1011 It has preheating via schedule. The app is not ready for Europe yet.

Thank you! Preheating was the only feature missing in my eyes, the car looks great otherwise. And would make a fantastic upgrade to my dino-diesel power Hyundai i30.

I can see some crossover with the Kia Soul EV which I have just ordered on our company lease scheme. The nav seems to in the same. I wish I had the money to buy outright but I just can't afford it. Perhaps I'll win the lottery when the Jaguar iPace comes out.
