I'm surprised the Ioniq despite having the smallest battery size at 28kWh actually beats the gen2 Leaf (with 30kWh) and i3 (with 33kWh) when it comes to actual range. Well done Hyundai. However Hyundai actually acknowledges with the Model 3 & Bolt with >200 mile range, the 2018+ Ioniq EV will actually receive an increase in battery pack size. Given Korea's innovation to electronics (Samsung, LG etc.) I would not be surprised if Hyundai will quickly catch GM & Tesla in EV development.

The amount of range despite the below freezing temperature, added weight due to accumulating ice, and using the heater was very impressive. The Ioniq will soon be offered in Southern California and with our warmer weather, it appears it will be able to easily top 200km (124 miles). Thank you for your extended review, enjoyed it.

If Hyundai (or any other car makers) engineers watch this video they realize he was driving alone in cold icy country road with no one nothing insight along the road.....imagine if the car stops for no reason in the middle of nowhere dark cold Scandinavia road....you guys not only building a car but it's more like a lifeline for those environments. It must be very very reliable. Keep up the good work and please build a car with great responsibility.

Hi Bjorn, thanks so much for super informative video review,. Just want to share with you some tricks from my experience of driving in frozen rain conditions. For next time you hit that frozen rain, use hot/boiling water, it's quickens the process dramatically... I want it to tell you that last time you had same issue with Tessa radar, but had trouble posting a comment. But now I see you have little electric kettle with you on trips that's makes it very convenient, just be careful not to poor very hot water on windshield so it could cracks, but I'm sure you will figure it off the right temperature of water to poor over frozen windshield wipers and ice... And of course Mary Christmas to you and your family, have a great time in Thailand!

To be honest, it's a little weird that it doesn't have that feature, because it made its first appearance back in at least 2003 on the Prius, and possibly earlier on something like a Mercedes but I'm not sure. So it's weird to have cars made in 2016 that have lots of high tech features but not that one.

It will be interesting to see if the range on the ampere e / chevy bolt forces tesla to increase the size of the standard battery pack on the model 3 when it comes out. They said originally a range of 215 miles plus, so I cant see them not wanting to offer a range over an above the other standard electric cars.

@VJW1407
@VJW1407 8 жыл бұрын
Bjørn, how about adding charging duration to the consumption info you show in your videos? The time it takes to recharge is/can be an issue on a longer trip for some and the charge time info summary would be useful. Total drive time and total charge time. Btw my dealer told me the ccs charger supports up to 150kw charge rates.

Looks like the Ioniq will give the Bolt some real competition. In your profit at the end, you listed $15 for "Depreciation", which normally means mileage wear over years. Did you mean you spent $15 for the cleaning supplies (windshield washer fluids?).

Interesting to see how low the kWh usage is on this car for such a cold day (weekend?). It seems like Ioniq may be capable of 200 watt/mi on a warm day when driven at lower highway speeds - seemingly amazing performance (efficiency). Perhaps it's the new class leader? This efficiency makes the 28 kWh battery seem to be about right for a low cost/light weight car, and all of the toys it offers is just icing on the cake. Consider that the more than 2x capacity battery in the Bolt adds about 500 lbs (and a longer charge time), which makes me ask: is a big range worth it to have that much extra weight to carry around? Ioniq seems to be a good example of raising the bar for EV performance for a commuter/daily driver. Based on comments that I read, everyone seems to be seeking maximum range (which I'd think adds considerable cost) but only time will tell if this lightweight recipe is successful.

Hi again Bjorn, really enjoyed the Ioniq review. I was wondering? The Renault Zoe 2017 model has just been released with a 40kw battery. Not sure what that takes the real world range to, but it should be over that of the Ioniq. If you haven't already reviewed the new Zoe I think you should as the price is being kept the same as the old version. If you had to choose between the new Zoe 40kw and the Ioniq 27kw, which would you go for?

Greetings from Bulgaria, my friend, to cope with the icy rain and ice accumulated on the windshield, you need alcohol, 95 percent (2/3), water (1/3) and liquid soap (100 ml) in a 1 liter bottle. Mix all the ingredients and you'll have miraculous mixture against ice. Then you only have to spray :)

Nice review. WHat about the latest eGolf with 300km range?. I drove them both and still doubt. The VW is more expensive but you can feel the quality of the car and see where the extra money goes to. And in terms of range/ loading time they are likely equal. But the Ioniq is also good.

You may want to tell people how you overtake over the centre piles of snow in and between tracks? If you watch russian car crash videos they seems to have full power on both going out and in. In my experince without stability control, speed up in your own lane, coast over the divide, speed up again in the other lane and you may even put it in neutral going back over. Any thoughts?

A question about that freezing rain. Did the front lamps were covered by ice when You stopped for charging or they were like this when You drive? LEDs do not generate much heat and I wonder if standard halogen (or xenon) bulbs would be better by melting the ice on the lamp surface. With LEDs, in the night and in such conditions or snowing I think, you have to stop every 50 km to clean headlamps covered with snow or ice... Even halogen lamps are melting just the part of the glass, but there is clean part. Not so much in case of the LEDs in Your movie. Hence my question.

Here is what I like more about Leaf (tekna,). The Leaf has clearly better sound, even though it's pretty good in the IONIQ aswell(tech pack). The Tekna has 360 degree camera, perfect when parking. The Leaf feels safer in high speed on the road, when turning, it´s like the Ioniq comes turning/throwing itself after you manuverd the steering wheel with some force. Maybe due to not having the battery in the floor. I like the seats and that you sit a little bit higher in the Leaf. The adaptive cruise control in the IONIQ is probaby very nice to have, but I tell you the Lane assistance is totally useless, many times it can´t find the edge of the E6 in Trondheim on a dry road. If these things arne´t important to you, go for the IONIQ. Side note: The IONIQ will come as a self driving car, I´m not sure if all the quipment is in place for that. Maybe it´s worth waiting for the next version. Also Conisder that the delivery might not be until late spring or(next batch) the end of the summer if you order now in Norway, that means Opel Ampera-e will be just around the corner, with twice the range. The range is also just a little bit better than the 30kwh Leaf. 17 vs 19 (EPA).

I saw you did a lot of quick charging sessions. Isn't it there recommended daily limit for Ioniq? In my Nissan Leaf owner's manual they recommend not to exceed more than 2 quick charging session per day. Nissan support told me since the DC charge heats up the battery this is why frequent DC charging sessions are harmful for the battery.

I'm totally excited about the Ioniq. The only thing that's holding me back is that Hyundai does not mention any kind of battery upgrade will be available when upcoming generations will have a larger battery. Like with the Renault Zoe. They will provide a upgrade package to just double the battery size. Nonetheless, the Ioniq will be available at my local dealer in February - I'll definitively will check this awesome car out!
