“In every generation the Irish people have asserted their right to national freedom and sovereignty; six times during the past three hundred years they have asserted it in arms.” The proclamation of the Irish Republic, delivered by Patrick Pearse in Dublin, marked the beginning of the Easter Rising in 1916.Looking at the Anglo-Irish relationship leading up to the Easter Rising, Tom and Dominic are joined by historian Paul Rouse, to explore the deep history between Britain and Ireland, from the Norman conquest to the rebellion of 1798.
*The Rest Is History Live Tour 2023*:Tom and Dominic are going on an U.S. tour in 2023, performing in Washington D.C. and New York!

Tom you should do a podcast about how Christianity has evolved in late 20th century America. Aka the “Bible Belt”. How American Baptist Protestantism has fit into the evolution of Christianity and how it to view it as a small part in a whole timeline

That’s one of the finest Irish accents that Dominic has come up with, it really feels like you have an actual Irish man in the room. Quite brilliant.

Great podcast as always guys . If I may be so bold (if you should read this ) it is my great hope for this podcast is that you do a 4 parter on lost Edwardian ocean liners. That would be awesome.

@@johnshistory6522 not at all. Part 1 Titanic, Part 2 Empress of Ireland, Part 3 Lusitania, Part 4 Britannic. As I said it's my hope to hear that. But I understand if it's too repetitive for 4.

@@nicholasege5970 I'm not saying you couldn't fill it. But they've done maybe three 4 partners ever. And those were on topics with a big popular appeal

The Fitz surnames by the way is norman French, (like Fitzgerald and Fitzpatrick). It means son (of), compare to Parisian French fis.

Anyone can come out with their own version of something at any time! As cameraman on a film many years ago, I told the Director we should probably call it a day, as it was getting too "Jurassic". No idea if anyone had used that before, and no explanation needed.

The point that was made about Cromwell. Tolkien made this point in LOTR when Gandalf was saying why he couldn't be the one to have the ring.

Is the "except in Ireland" a quasi-crusade?

The death toll at Drogheda was small compared to what happened in the sieges of the 30 Years War (1618-1648) where millions died. Less than 3,000 died at Drogheda. This was also a Royalist garrison commanded by Sir Arthur Aston an Englishman. Cromwell came to Ireland to mop up Royalist resistance. The Irish decided to involve themselves in the English Civil War after Charles I had been beheaded. They made a similar mistake with James II in 1690. James went to Ireland and raised an army after he had been kicked out of England. The Irish picked the losing side in both English Civil Wars of the 17th century. This sort of behaviour just invites English distrust. Leo Varadkar picked Brussels during Brexit, and Ireland will probably pay a price in the future. The EU is already falling apart, with Putin causing fractures. Germany will probably reach an understanding with Russia. Ireland isn't in NATO and Geriatric Irish Joe will be gone soon. Ireland can't defend its infrastructure or its airspace, security may again become an issue.

The Irish - Anglo ☘️ history so much reminds me of Ukraine 🇺🇦- rusian history. With the exception that British imperialist were the model and rusians were copying it 😅 can you do a podcast on that topic?

@@johnmckiernan2176 I was just making the point that while the Tom and Dominic are never shy about doing their intros in funny accepts when they are introducing a story about Johnny Foreigner, this one was about Ireland. And as us Brits aren't allowed to criticise Ireland in any way, they didn't do it this time and got a Professional Irishman to do it
