We built a budget precision rifle target out of self-healing foam and wanted to see how much damage it can withstand. We needed to test with a number of rifles dropped in our Oryx Sportsman Chassis to see what calibers would work and what wouldn't.
For sighting your rifle, most people use a cheap and easy plywood target. From experience, self-healing foam targets are able to withstand more damage and need to be replaced less often. They can be left out in the weather for days without getting waterlogged and deteriorating. But, can they withstand the amount of energy that the .338 Lapua magnum can deliver? The results are surprising!
If you're looking to built a target for testing your hand loads or sighting in your scope, this might be a good option for you.
The rifles used were:
Oryx Sportsman Chassis with Remington 700 in 6.5 Creedmoor
Oryx Sportsman Chassis Howa 1500 in 300 PRC
Oryx Sportsman Chassis Savage 110 in .338 Lapua Magnum
