Oh man I had 70 GTO and the same thing happened to me at the track. A 340 duster pulled up and I thought I had something for him but he got outta the hole and all I saw were his tail lights. Those 340s have taken down a lot of big blocks.

In the spring of 1984 I was 16 and took my 69 GTO to the track for the "High School Drags". It was bone stock with 64K miles on it. The "High School Drags" were bracket racing. I made it to the last round. The car I faced off against was a 70 Duster 340. I was dialed in at 14.90 and he was dialed in at 14.70. I ran a 14.88 and he ran a 14.69. We both broke out. Since he was closer to his dial in he took home the first place trophy and I took home 2nd place. I still have that trophy. My GTO had a 400 of course since the 455 wasn't available until 70, but Mopars and Pontiacs have been fighting it out on the tracks and streets since racing cars became a thing. And I love and own them both. I still have that GTO and I also have a 68 Roadrunner, 68 Charger and a 70 Challenger. And I wouldn't trade a single one of them for one of these new cars.

I'm a Pontiac fan thru and thru but that 340 is really something. It is amazing how hard they run. Arguably the best small block performance engine. They were among the least expensive performance engines too. Around $3 grand in Duster or Dart I think?? They really hit a home run with the 340.

Yeah, I've seen ads for the 1970 340 Dart Swinger and they said "6000 RPM for $3000", I got a 1970 340 Dart Swinger in 1976 for my first car. My closest race was with a red 1969 Z/28. Camaro. It had already been restored and it was gorgeous. He was so arrogant because my Dart had a rusted deck lid and rear fenders and spots of touch up paint that really didn't match the factory green paint. I guess he thought I would be an easy win. But the drivetrain was stock and strong except for a slightly larger Carter AFB. Every time he shifted his 4 speed I would pull slightly ahead. At the top of each gear he would almost catch up. We crossed the end of the 1/4 mile with me ahead by a fender. He went nuts being shown up in front of his buddies by a rusted old Mopar. Because of the oil crisis and insurance rates I got mine for $350. I think he had a bit more in his. :)

Look at that the 340 small block ran down a big block. Wonder why I'm a die hard mopar fan. Mopar was ahead of time when they designed / built these cars and motors . Power to weight ratio at its finest right there . Unibody mopar already lighter then then small block of course is lighter than a big block but those 340's do damage especially 4 speed and 410s in the rear . Gives any GM cars a run for their money and I would say forget it . Hands down mopar is where it's at .

I love the Rallye gauges on the 340 Darts and Dusters. My older brother got a 1967 Dodge Charger and it had similar gauges. I thought the 150 mph speedo and all of the gauges in a circle to the right of the speedo looked cool. Then a few years later I got a 6 year old 1970 340 Dodge Dart Swinger with only 42, 000 miles on it with the 150 mph speedo and the 4 gauges in a circle. I only top ended it once but it's good it didn't have the old 120 mph speedo. The needle was going past 125 mph when I had to slam on my Kelsey- Hayes front disc brakes about that time. It probably wouldn't have gone much faster. The only change from stock was a larger Carter AFB. It really made a difference. Before, 1st gear would wind out to 42 mph. With just the carb change it went to 55 mph. Of course the other 2 gears went faster too. The windows were down during the run. The sound of 125 mph winds outside the window combined with that sweet 340 screaming was amazing. When my brother tried to tell me something, he had to lean over and put his mouth close to my ear and scream what he wanted to say to me. Cop cars were slow back then......

I was trying to see what year the Pocho was, 70,71, or 72. If it wasn't an HO and was an automatic, optioned out (heavy), with mild gearing, the Duster would definitely run with it. I think a 13.89 requires slicks and some light massaging but they don't say here if they are bone stock. I had a 70 Duster that was factory ordered stripped. Not even a radio and with hub caps. Powder blue like Driving Miss Daisy! Took the spare out and the jack, windshield wipers off, vinyl floor, bench seat. Mildly modified, holley, headers, with low restriction but quiet exhaust, manifold, drag shocks, traction bars , 3.91 gears, slicks, I would routinely run mid 13's. Wiped a lot of smirks off of a lot of faces.

340 Dusters are sweet. I ran one with my Goat, back in 73 and he handed me my donkey. Not to be outdone, I went home and borrowed my dad's Buick. It was a 1970 Wildcat with the 455. They advertised this motor as making 370 hp, but each motor had a metal dyno plate riveted to the engine. His particular engine dynoed at 396hp and over 500 ft/lbs of torque from the factory! And his wasn't stock. Long story short, I met back up with the Duster and returned the favor. That Buick would pull the front wheels if you could get the traction. It did that day.

The finish line was about a couple of hundred feet past the timing board it’s has a big blue stripe that goes up the cement wall and has a stripe on the ground going across both lanes, that’s why they kept their foot in the radiator long after they passed the billboard with the times on it. The Duster ran him down.

Surprised and beat my share of big blocks and small blocks, as well. Wish I'd kept it. Family outgrew it. Traded it and drew some cash on a '68 Town and Country wagon. Embarrassed a few with that wagon, too. put a 383HP from a '69 RR in it. Wagon already had heavy suspension, Sure Grip and disc brakes. Tons of fun! BTW, Bryan D., nice job beating up the Goat! As a former 340 Barracuda owner, I'm frankly surprised the bigger Poncho didn't begin to show advantage when both cars reached top gear. Torque multiplication in low gears makes it harder to get traction when there's such huge torque from the big block. It's easier to get the 340 to hook so for a few seconds it will show its taillights way ahead in the distance, but I expected to see things change when the 455's too-much-torque became insane advantage in 3rd or 4th gear. That's how the 429 Torinos and 401 Gremlins used to destroy my early lead. Perhaps this guy's 340 has a better way to take in the mixture than my single Thermoquad...

That thing is sweet. I’ve had a bunch of 340 dusters mostly stick cars also, good job shifting. I was running 11.0 with a stock trans with a super shifter 3. A circle track guy told me to run 30w engine oil in the trans and it did shift smoother. You can only go so fast with the stock linkage anyway it’s just to weak once you start going 10s and quicker. You won’t have that problem. 👍

I had put a super shifter 3 in my 72 340 Demon after I had swapped out the factory 3 speed on the floor with a 4 speed. It was a good little shifter with those 1/2” thick straight shifter rods instead of the skinny factory bent to go around the transmission cross support bracket and were way too flexible for real power shifts that could be done with the SS3 shifter, but I still liked the vertical gate Hurst shifter that I put in my 70 340 Duster better.

Follow-up. The LeMans pictured in this video is the GT version. Pontiac built only 21 of them with the 455 HO round port head engines. Standard 455 was not available. So yes, you could have raced one. Just a note. 455 HO A-body cars were built with the giant ironing board style wing on the trunk, which this car lacked. 455? Possible...just not likely. You do have a sweet ride, nonetheless!

Could have been anything from a stock 350 Pontiac to a transplanted SD 455. There are a lot of different factors that go into who wins a drag race. It was a close race between two really cool cars.
