Ive had my 72 CB500k for about 7 yrs. The ticking is normal. Kinda sounds like a sewing machine lol. Just make sure the carbs are in sync-that seems to make the engine sound smooth and quiet. Good work and good luck 👍

Hondas of that era are built to be very reliable, and yours is very similar to my CL350 of the same year. As far as the ticking, I would recommend synthetic oil and Lucas Oil Stabilizer, as I've had very positive results for my engine. It won't get rid of all the ticking since they're all tickers from that era, but it will run and start better. Good video man

Handy household tips on those valve caps. Make sure to use a good quality 6 point socket (not harbor freight) and work them back and forth slightly before you attempt to loosen them. Tighten and loosen slightly ko’s less hardware.
@randypullman11554 жыл бұрын
Bravo! Another epic video man... As the rocker arm wears on the rockerbridge it becomes oval shaped. The trick is to use a soft spring and hold up the arm pulling out the clearance at the rocker bridge. How about a video on fork oil and swing arm grease then take the tank to a autobody shop for a fat flake paint job in candy yellow.

I know what ya mean about that feeling when you finally nail the problem that's been eluding you. Somewhere between where the tach cable enters the engine and the crank gear that drives it, I believe there is a plastic gear that maybe damaged or be the issue in some way, of course the problem could be in the body of the tachometer gauge itself- I'd open it up and dowse it with earl.

Hey Mason, that ticking is normal my 83 goldwing does that I found that the carb sync is everything on these old bikes everything runs on vaccum lines. Changing the clearance on the valves changes how much air each cylinder is taking in and putting out . Sync up the carbs and adjust the air fuel ratio and see if that helps , cheers.

Check the exhaust seals. I know it may seem counter intuitive but stacked exhaust seals are poorly seated seals can cause exhaust valve ticking. Take a long screw driver and hold it to the caps and to your ear. It’s a way to pin down location.
@jeffferguson8994 жыл бұрын
still ticking because there is probably a valve sticking . plus these bikes have pretty noisy engines compared to other Japanese manufacturers . the cam chains in them are notoriously noisy. typical honda. i had a 78 550 that ticked for a few minutes during start up and then got quieter as it warmed up.

You should consider getting a set of metric 6 point wrenches/sockets...12 point sockets are notorious for stripping stubborn heads on bolts/nuts and especially aluminum tappet covers.

Ticking could be camshaft bearing wear. Also sticking valves is quite possible.

To tighten the camshaft chain on a cb400t you have to loosen that nut and then tighten it.... WHILE THE MOTOR IS RUNNING. I'm glad I didn't try to do that with my cb500 lol

My 550 is noisy as hell. These things are just noisy haha. But I would do a carb sync it’ll get that thing running crazy smooth after you’ve done your valve adjustment

hey man i have a quick question im 15 working on restoring a 1972 suzuki tc185 and i was wondering where you got your gas tank decals? thanks for your time patrick
@cosmicglory67684 жыл бұрын
Hello! Im currently restoring a 1985 gs550L. It doesn't run yet but it does turn over. Gas is getting into the float bowls, new battery, and fresh gas, new oil(oil light is on i didnt put enough in the engine). The bike had SOLID compression. But i cant figure out why it doesnt start. When i try to start the bike there is zero combustion(the air filter is disconnected; new pod filters are on the way). I also have new spark plugs and they all have a solid spark. choke plungers need new springs and they arent connected to the choke cable. My best guess as of to why it isnt running is because of the plungers. If someone could give me some solid pointers that would be amazing! Also, Gold Guy, if you see this, you inspired me to restore bikes. (i blame you for getting me into this head scratching labyrinth of troubleshooting 😂)

Did you get the bike going?
@krmoto51584 жыл бұрын
The bike's been sitting a while and it's pretty old so it might need a top end rebuild the cams are probably a little flat so that's why the Valves may be slapping around in there also th it could be the clutch. clutches tend to dry out if they'r Setting for a long time So the Springs could Also have play and maybe that's where the noise is coming from Also that timing chain could B bad. Just some things for you to check
@rachellebrown47622 жыл бұрын
What air filters are you using? (Size and brand please.) I'm in the process of re storing a 1973 cb500. And it looks like you eliminated the stock air box with the filters you use. If you can let me know that'd be great, Thank you in advance.

When are you going to adjust your float level and do a carburetor sync. Like someone mentioned. Carburetors out-of-sync will make your motor sound noisy. Try seafoam which you can add to the fuel and or the oil.
@EllaBananas3 жыл бұрын
yea the tach looks to be sticky. also you were definitly well past redline when you mentioned it. Not that thats necessarily a bad thing. I mean, these engines rarely float valves and will happily rev to 11k just wont make much power then.

Take it for a longer ride and then pull all four plugs. They will give you a health status on all four; lean or rich, oil fouled Etc. It seems like it only runs on three when it is cold. Besides, switching to electronic ignition will surely make your life easier.

Its an old engine both in terms of years but also design. Could be down to milage/wear and tear.. To be fair it don't sound that bad to me,but Im 57 and had Z650's.in my youth. Oil and filter change wont hurt none,if you havent already done it.

@skrrtskrrt6464 жыл бұрын
your intake valve is very loose... 0.05 mm is almost nothing, you should not be able to move the rocker arms so much... remember the clearance between the rocker and the valve is the samt amount you are able to move it up and down. Also if while moving it by hand you can hear it click clack, then you can definetly hear when the engines started.

was the odometer at 30,000 miles? bike is old & tired, of course motor is going to need a lot of work and noisy as well as lack of power. don't spend too much on this one GoldGuy, it's a potential money pit when you can get a pretty sick newer bike for about $2500 and less than 10 years old. anything pre 1984 is more museum piece than daily rider
