You need to balance the carbs. A good backyard way is to make sure the butterflies are equally at the same openings. Use a small piece of wire and put it under the butterfly on all of them and adjust them. It takes a slight touch and a few times to get the perfect. The wire is to get a fine adjustment. And then find a airflow balancer where you adjust the needles. Good video goldguy. I like when you feel you’ve done something awesome. Wooooo hoooooo !!! 🤣🤣😎🤣

Bravo Brother! Happy to see fellow restorers keeping them on the road. So many neglect proper jetting, fuel bowl level and synchro tuning of the 4 mikuni carbs. I have a '73 cb500f 18k miles & a '72 cb350f with 3k miles still going strong. Tips: when on sale, pickup 4 iridium spark plugs. They give a little extra complete burn. Add MMO to fuel to keep carb clean. Use a fully synthetic Jaso MA ( non moly) rated oil such as QuickSiver 10w-40 motorcycle or a Shell Rotella t6 5w-40 for your colder climate. They have sufficient zinc in it and smooths out the wet clutch shifts too.

I was riding pillion one day with my friend on his 1976 CB 500 when a guy on an RD350Lc wanted a race. 0 to 40mph the LC was leading. 40 to 80mph we were neck and neck. 80 to 100mph we were pulling away from him and he kept on wagging his head in disbelief. A mid 7os CB with two guys with overcoat and rubber wellies on pissing all over a guy with dayglo leather sports jacket, cool helmet snd a tricked out LC! Nobody talks about CB 500s snd yet the LC is now an icon. I'm not hating on the LC I even owned a YPVS for a while. Although the RD was great fun, it was not faster than the 500cc inline 4's of the day. I love RD's but we should not forget about the many fun inline 4's of the 70's and 8o's

Hello, there is some good advise in the comments on how to set up carburettors, first is balance slides with a piece of wire under them, then you need to make sure float levels are correct, too high will be rich, too low will be lean, it is not all about jetting, make sure you have no air, or fuel line restriction, and at the end of a ride, check spark plugs, good luck. 😉

Chances are the bike's carbs are still set up for leaded gasoline. Running on modern weaker & less potent unleaded gasoline throws all those settings out of the window as it combusts differently, especially if contaminated with ethanol. Also the non-standard WTF exhaust system doesn't help. I'm presuming that you've balanced / synchronised the carbs too.
@bobdobalina7794 жыл бұрын
Leaded or not, this bike was probably set up for low or mid grade fuel from the factory anyway. Like other people said, the carb sync could be off, and those pod filters aren't helping him. With that said, finding an original air box can be difficult for these old bikes, especially because all the cafe racer kids throw them out all the time. My CB750 had the original box and it ran like a top, my 650 nighthawk had pods and it ran noticeably poorer at certain rpms.

Now reinstall the air box and see how long it takes to get the carbs off properly lol. Your first step should have been removing the fuel lines and tank...Who tries to work on the carbs with the tank in the way? lol. Also if the airbox is there, you most likely could just go back to the stock jetting of #100's for the mains and it would be a lot better. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not one of those air box snobs. I just feel most people that arn't too experienced with SOHC4's should get them going in their stock configuration first....then go from there. Good job none the less my dude, nice to see more people around my age doing this stuff. Btw that 500 is still super slow compared to how it should be hah... Lowering your needles by 1 clip might clear up that super rich startup / not liking choke, and also make it way faster...( I mean to raise the clip up 1 notch, thus lowering the needles...anyone that has messed this stuff should know what i mean though)...

Pull all four spark plugs and look at the color of the deposits on the electrodes. Tan is good, white is lean and black is rich. I'm guessing you will find at least two that are darker. Order a carb synchronizer tool and study how to use it. Balance the carburetors BEFORE you make any more jetting changes. Good work in getting that machine running!

Use something like silicon or even some water resistant grease as a temporary glue for the carb bowl gaskets. Either one will work fine and wont potentially ruin the gasket when you have to peel it out next time.
@spencerbush77604 жыл бұрын
Now that you found the main jet setting lean or lower the needle. After that you’ll probably need to richen or go up a size on the pilot jet. I like using a colortune for finding my air fuel mixture on air fuel mix screws and low throttle. Run the bike at 1/4 throttle and cut it off then read the plugs and it tells you the rich or lean condition of pilot jet. Doing the same at full throttle is main jets and about halfway is your needle jet. There is other ways to detect the lean rich conditions; such as seat of the pants, rev dropping too fast or remaining high, stubbles and bogs, but you have to judge between what throttle position you are in.

A just a thought housabout finding a harley to rebuild maybe a sporster or something. I think it would be really cool. Never owned one Yet .
@trevorjameson32133 жыл бұрын
I've done that. I bought an '01 Sportster 883 that had been sitting in a shed for 12 years. Dirty, rotted fuel line, rotted tires, dead battery, clogged up carb. Paid 1500 for it. The bike was all original and somewhat high mileage at 40k. I cleaned it up, replaced everything that needed replacing. Then tore down the engine and converted it to a 1250cc. Installed Andrews N4 cams, Mikuni pumper carb, better air cleaner, tuned pipes. Replaced stock ignition with aftermarket flyweight type electronic ignition. Installed Barnett Clutch with heavier springs. Removed belt drive and replaced with 530 chain drive. Had the 883 heads redone and new valves and springs. The bike is an absolute BEAST now! Since I retained the lower 883 gearing, this thing gets to 100mph very quickly. Due to the cams, power starts building hard at 3500rpm and really comes on the cams around 5000rpm. The pull is insane, hard to hang onto it under full throttle. Love it! You can find an old Evo sportster pretty cheap if you wanted to get one and build it up. They are built like a tank too, very tough bikes.
