I knew they were going to set some records, They just redid the track last year and with the near sea level altitude and low humidity in February it was just a matter of time. All they needed was the Pro classes there to do it. I've been going to that track since 1977 when it was DeSoto drag strip. So glad it happened there. Can't wait till next year. Will be going all 4 days. Love the reaction of those who have never experienced a Top fuel or Funny car run. The smell of the Nitro and the vibration in your body when they go is something you have to experience. Just need more concession stands.
@georgedennison333810 ай бұрын
@@Badassaccord I've been chuckling about what the land developers around BMP & the FF were thinking this week... When nitros still ran in Portland, I lived about 2 miles south of downtown. PIR was almost 7 miles north of downtown, on the other side of the river. I could sit on my front porch & here the sweet sound of nitro runs... no more. Developers bought the land cheap, sold cheap single family, didn't build the low cost, multiple units they were supposed to, paid the fine & moved on. Within 2-3 yrs, no more drag racing, AT ALL. Just saw the newest big event at PIR, Formula E. Somebody will bitch about the crowds, if it gets popular.
@MrSuzuki118710 ай бұрын
The reason for the incredible speeds is that Nitro Funny Car crew chiefs have FIANALLY started aiming their exhaust headers more to the rear to take advantage of the the thrust they produce. Top Fuel cars cannot do this because the headers would melt the rear tires and cause a huge amount of turbulence. The 12,000 hp nitro engine produces at least 8,000 lbs of jet thrust from their headers which is more than 3,000 eqivalent shaft horsepower. I have been flying jet aircraft for over 50 years and have taught jet engine theory to other pilots which is why I know this. The formula to convert jet thrust to ESHP is to divide the thrust by 2.5. It amazes me that the top fuel engine has more jet thrust than both engines on some corporate jets. I flew the Boeing 767-300 for 15 years and each engine produced 60,000 lbs of jet thrust, or 24,000 Equivalent Shaft Horsepower. For all these years crew chiefs were using the header thrust for down force and ignoring the performance gains from aiming them more to the rear. And this is why Funny Cars have higher top speeds than Top Fuel cars.

@@dakotaautosales9673 not the comparison I think the OP was trying to draw... more like the overall atmosphere and excitement with standing room only, whereas at many if not most NHRA events these days have bare grandstands and possess a corporate, production like environment. So two big questions seem to prevail here: are the clocks right, and are the cars in NHRA trim? It's doubtful that the clocks are somehow doctored. It's not easy to do secretively. Further, the PRO racers desire and deserve accurate numbers, for each pass costs tens of thousands of dollars, and the data developed and retrieved is accordingly invaluable. Are they in true NHRA trim? That's really nobody's business but the teams'. A small change that doesn't upset the tuneup too much certainly may be in play. A tad more nitro percentage, a tad more blower overdrive, a tad less weight. The temptation to do so would be great, and while it wouldn't be something they could duplicate at NHRA, it needn't be useless info either. Learning and reaching higher is as important to these teams as anything. Setting a new mark like this is no small accomplishment either, and certainly an attractive bonus. It's not an NHRA record, but experimenting at a race like this could help teams eventually get there in NHRA trim. It is legit? Yep. It happened. And it will happen again, but for all time, BMP will be where it happened first.

I used to go to that very same drag strip back in the early 70's and my father was a cop for the Mounds view police dept and they often times would get the contract to do security for that track and me and my father would get in for free while he worked . We basically walked around just making sure that no riff raff was going on between the drag strip and the dirt oval track which at that time was the fastest 1/2 mile dirt oval track in the USA . Once the races were over the track owner would let the squad cars run down the 1/4 just to see what kind of times they could turn but I don't remember what times or mph they were doing because it's been so long ago . I'm still friends of the Simons who there parents owned the hamburger shack just before you drove into the drag strip to pay that was on the left hand side of the road that was a 3.2 bar way back then . The strip is long gone now and there is a Medtronic's building on part of the property and a small business complex on the land unfortunately but I can remember at times heading either north or south on hwy 35 during the day if the wind was blowing just right the tire smoke from the burn outs would blow across both lanes of hwy 35 thick enough at times you couldn't see . The other drag strip was Minnesota drag ways where all the big time drag racers would run . Local Tom Hoover would run quite a lot back then and you had guys like Sox and Martin Jungle Jim Dyno Don Nicholson Big Daddy Don Garlet's all of them who would run at the track chasing for points and money to be able to drive to the next drag strip cross country back then . The exhibition stuff was great because I remember seeing Wild Bill Maverick's Little Red wagon wheelie truck Evil kinevel doing jumps the Green Mamba jet car Joey Chit woods team of stunt drivers the Army & Marines tanks which were fiberglass body replica tanks put over a short wheel based dragster that would race each other & i remember seeing some guy who was dressed up in full leathers with a helmet on & goggles that would crawl into a wood coffin and blow himself up with dynamite and the coffin would explode into small fragments of wood and people would run over to help him get up off the ground alive still lol . Both tracks got shut down because of people complaining about the noise with Minnesota drag ways going first and Yamaha R&D had bought the land to test the new snowmobiles they were developing to finally go into production to be sold to the public in the early 70's and they were at that location for many years until people complained about the noise from the snowmobiles they were constantly testing & the land got sold to developers who built a big housing complex on it unfortunately. It wasn't until the late 80's that North Star shut it's doors down for good and the track stands and bleachers stood for many years abandoned silent and eventually the land got sold & everything torn down . I worked for Blue tow down the road from where the entrance of North Star was & had to go tow a car that broke down back in where the drag strip was right when the new Medtronics building was being built and it was sad for me knowing that the drag strip was long gone and me and my father would go to it all those years before he died from cancer in 91 . RIP Sergent Edward Loomis gone but not forgotten.
