Ollie is still here for a few more days. Autumn is showing its first signs and the rainy weather brings mushrooms. Cam and Hannah from Canada are on a bike trip through Europe and stop by for a few days. Everyone is a great help and we're finishing cleaning, painting and nailing the boards on the roof.

Whew! ‘You’ve got a roof, mate!’ Thank goodness for your helpful friends, Martijn! Breathing a sigh of relief as me and my 3 year old granddaughter were waiting for this week’s video….and the surprise of abundance mushrooms popping up in your meadow. How wonderful for your land to reward you with these jewels! My father was a roofer in his youth with his many Norwegian brothers & now I see through your videos the sights they saw finishing a roof….but I don’t think they ever saw such an expanse of mountains, rocks and clouds from the perch such as that last shot…puts it all into perspective. Thank you yet again.

Martijn - just a tip for the next roof. Always sheath from the eve line up not from the ridge down. That way you have something to stand on while working towards the ridge. Also, since you are using tongue and groove sheathing, it's easier to straighten the crooked boards by toe nailing towards you instead of working against gravity.

When I hear those cow bells, I remember my childhood and the three cows we milked twice a day by hand, using their milk for butter churned by hand and soft cheeses my mother made. Our lead cow, Grandma, wore the bell and we always knew where she was. And the others always stuck close to her, for she was wise. The sound of those bells is a powerful thing for me. Your videos have come to mean so much to me for both the story you tell and for the cowbell sounds in the distance. Thank you so much.

Loved it as always. What memories mushrooming brought back. 75 years ago, Driving home with my Dad after staying on a sheep station in the high country of New Zealand we would turn a bend in the narrow shingle road and see a hill almost white with mushrooms. We would pick a boxful to take home. Gradually fertilisers came into use which stopped them growing. Thank you for helping me remember a wonderful childhood.

You have captured a magical place to be. That you were able to see it is no accident and that you are willing and able to share is a blessing to all who see it. You are also bringing out the beauty and craftsmanship of those historic stone buildings. I wish you nothing but success and all the gentle generous blessings of your surroundings. Thank you for your care, your efforts and for sharing.

This takes me back to 34 years ago when, in the spring through fall of 1988, my 67-year-old stepfather and I built my two-story 1500 sq. ft house with a full basement (which we laid block by block) on 1-2/3 acres with a 5:12 pitch and three dormers we live in now will the help of my mother, my brother, and his friend. I enjoyed the roofing that autumn the most. We worked daily in the mornings and early afternoons until I went to work as a computer supervisor for a plumbing company at 3 pm and every weekend. Then 4 years later we built a 24x60' two-story garage after I got married and had our son and in which he currently lives with his girlfriend. Then, going even further back 65 years to the times when I as a small child, and my dad and I would forage the woods of southern Michigan for morels, come home, and batter fry them in butter in my great-grandmother's cast iron skillet. Now, I am 72 and I and my husband are rebuilding an old 21x61' 1956 Walthers house made of 2x3 douglas fir, after stripping out all the drywall and insulation which had been destroyed by renters of almost twenty years who were hoarders and their resulting mice, so far filling a 40-yard dumpster, making 12 more trips to the local landfill, and another 6 trips to the Goodwill store removing their items and the damage done. We just this week put up a 10-1/2' pocket beam and moved a 12' wall with the help of our son and our neighbor in order to increase the size of the bedroom and then yesterday framed in and installed the first of five exterior doors. My husband and I are working 6-7 mornings a week, trying to get it all buttoned up before winter here in northern Indiana, but still have fourteen 36x60" windows to frame in and install, two five-foot exterior french doors, and then two more 36" exterior doors. We are not tackling the standing-seam metal roof, which we have contracted out, but hope to get it sided with Solar-Shield vinyl siding before it gets too cold to work outside here, usually by the end of October. I am eternally grateful for what my step-father taught me about carpentry, which I have used almost every day, making everything from furniture to the greenhouse to the houses we own, and grateful for my husband's electrical skills and willingness to tackle anything. I spend a lot of time reading the IRC, the Indiana Residential Code, online in my spare time. We are grateful for our current health, but, because of our age, we have decided to downsize to a one-story with less to take care of, though we will miss our pool, pond, greenhouse, and flower and vegetable gardens. However, we will still have almost an acre, half of which is wooded which my 74-year-old husband plans to make a nature preserve with trails. We have no wolves, but plenty of owls, hawks, wild turkeys, grouse, pheasants, and white-tailed deer, and then yesterday I spotted a red fox. We always look forward to your videos each week and enjoy their peacefulness. Be careful getting those stones back up on the roof. No more skylights for me, as mine would start leaking every two or three years and I would find myself up 40' in the air on the edge of a dormer repairing around the flashing, which was properly installed, but the daily temperature changes in the winter caused to loosen no matter how much sealant I applied under, over and around it! (My husband is scared of heights.)

Ah, yes - my Polish grandmother taught us how to identify mushrooms! We would make 'treks' out to the forest preserves northwest of Chicago and come back with 4-6 bushels! Then she and my Irish mother would spend hours cleaning and canning them. I absolutely hated mushrooms as a child, but now as a 63-year-old, what I wouldn't give for those wild mushrooms now! 🍄

When the last board was going on and the music started to slowly come in - that made me cry! What an achievement Martijn (and Ollie, Hannah, Cam and everyone else who's helped over the last few months!) So love your videos x

Mushroom hunting is such a pleasure. Fond memories picking with my grandmother, in spring, morels were my favorite. On a different subject, try putting your nails in a left hand pouch of your nail bag so you don't have the awkward hammer/nail hand switch.

Good to see you back, reading the comments I was not the only one worrying. Unfortunately you are stuck with a hundred mothers and who knows how many wives, you'll be hearing a lot of concern if you miss showing up just a bit. Don't take it to heart though. Good job on that roof, anxious to see the next step. Have a good week!

Hello Martijn I'm starting to watch all the videos, great work process to create a beautiful home. I will tell you that here in Galicia, I often collect macrolepiotas proceras and I have to recommend a way to cook them if you allow me. You coat the hat in flour and then in egg and you make them in a pan with olive oil, they are delicious that way. Also once coated you can put a slice of bacon or serrano ham in the middle of two hats and fry them. greetings from Galicia

Always amazed by the beauty and location of your property. So very fortunate to have Ollie and other friends stopping by to lend a hand. Oh, I love mushrooms. Can visualize the smell and how delicious they taste all the way to Texas. Roof decking finally complete. Looking forward to the skylight installation. Thank you Martijn for this beautiful video.

Thanks for the update Martijn. The mushrooms are amazing and reminded me of a time about 30 years ago when the field behind my bungalow in the UK suddenly produced hundreds of button mushrooms. It never happened again. The field was used by horses for grazing. Could never understand why this only happened once in 30 years. The mushrooms tasted amazing! Thanks again for sharing.

Fantastic! Having friends help, seeing great progress! Ollie is a great human being and reassured me with his knowledge of mushrooms, they are so healthy and plentiful! Glad you had a chance for a small break as well. What a wonderful thing to see the roof close in and brilliant idea for the sunroof! It was worth the wait and as usual, I didn't want it to end! Well done! See you next time! Peace!

In my house, which is over 100 years old and which I bought 2 years ago, there are also stone loaches on the roof, but I left them for between them I poured concrete and it does not leak. Greetings from Serbia, Radan Natural Park
