Vapor barrier commenters, you are all right. It would be better if it goes horizontally, I didn't think about it. It's not the end of the world though, because the overlap is substantial and I will add a sheet metal layer underneath the stones. There won't be leaks. "Locking in" the insulation against dormice is also thought of.

Martijn, about the insulation. I also would look into more natural materials instead of mineral whool. There is also wood insulation from Steico e.g. and if you look for more substitutes of the Tyvek, Siga does the same in similar quality.

Sorry Martijn, but it really does need to go horizontally - there are enough irregularities in how the tyvek is laid over the wool, that any water will travel sideways.

To Martin's credit though he did tape those seams that run perpendicular to the ridge beam instead of parallel to it. And running that big roll in such a way made his one man installation more efficient in terms of time and labor. Underestimate this man at your own risk ;).

I was very surprised to see the barbed wire. People easily climb between the strands, continuing to forage on your property, while any animal large enough to be stopped by it can become entangled in a heartbreaking mess of flesh and wire. And if, as a commenter suggests, Italy may allow discreet foraging, to what end is the barbed wire fence, really? Many rural residents "post" their property with signs, deterring hunters and trespassers alike. Not until you experience firsthand a cow, goat, deer, wolf or dog trapped, panicking and unable to be safely cut free can you understand the terrible destruction this fence is capable of. I was fortunate enough to see your first video within hours of your uploading it, and I have cheered you on each week since then. I am proud of your meticulous, artful crafting in all you do, Martijn. The world is watching. A fence is a powerful statement. Best wishes!

We made what we called dead hedges to stop people walking where they shouldn’t, stakes from cut down trees (coppicing) and then using old broken/dead branches and lots of brush wood. A bit of forward thinking and prepping required but it also makes for great wildlife area’s, it’s not permanent and will need updating, but looks natural and if done well looks great.

It's unusual to be mesmerised each week for nearly an hour and then spend time trawling through all the comments to see if you've missed anything, or have anything worth sharing. The outro shot with you working indoors was spectacular. Is that Barbed Wire???? Sadly it looks like it on my screen..... Watched all your videos and find a great peace with the way you work and your connection with nature, so it came as a big surprise when I saw you putting up barbed wire around your property to keep out mushroom hunters. Barbed wire is the scourge of the very environment that you so immerse yourself in, it may keep cattle in order but two lines of barbed wire will never prevent a determined human crossing over to steal one of your mushrooms, if it is meant as a boundary marker and/or a deterrent then there are softer options available. I remember when was around 10 years of age, out on a walk on a farm we were camping on as a family, me, my father and the land owner,, we came upon a dead deer its stomach ripped open, intestines protruding after it failed to fully clear a barbed wire fence, the farmer cursed his neighbouring land owner for using barbed wire when no reason existed, I hope the same fate does not come to one of the many animals that frequent your property at night. And don't become that land owner, I hope you are more than that, it might cost you a few mushrooms and the appearance of the odd wayward walker but your soul will enjoy the decision to remove it. A product of the American cattle industry and much used to confine prisoners of war, it has no place in such beauty as you have there. Mark

Such drama! 🤔 It's Martijn's home. We must respect his decisions to live on his property as he wants to. I'm sure it's fine to lend him our ideas, but not degrade him for his choices. Dear Martijn, I think that your thoughts about the positioning of the Tyvek are just hopes, it will not work, water finds always its way. I have renovated an old Mas in southern France at the altitude of 600 meters years ago and have spent a lot of money correcting errors like this. Also the thickness of the insulation is not sufficient, we have put in 40 cm stonewool insulation to protect against heat and cold. This works. My brother-in-law a couple of km away had also put in "thin" insulation and is struggeling every year.

My father calls these mushrooms ( Macrolepiota procera) "owls" because of the pattern on the "hat", look also for the pattern on the stem. It's actually pretty good way to tell them apart from other similar species of Macrolepiota and Chlorophyllum. I remember that even kids ate it, we covered it in breadcrumbs and then fried it on a pan.

Jammer dat je prikkeldraad moest opzetten… dat geeft een andere sfeer aan de plek…😢

Het is een aalbessenstruik, zuur maar prima eetbaar. Lijsterbessen zijn bijna zwart en hebben een gladde bladrand.

I shared your laugh at the singing shepherds, drunk singing sounds the same no matter where you are. Even if you're not there with them, you can share in their joy and maybe remember it the next time you have a party like that.

Hello from France Martijn, following you from the very beginning, it's the first time I let a comment, or more precisely a question about the fences. Don't you think that what seems to be barbed wire may be dangerous for the wild animals around? You said that it's provisional before installing a wooden one but I feel concerned about animals, and I know you are too. I understand about the privacy and the intruders and your little paradise must be protected. Anyway it doesn't change anything about the great job you're doing there, im actually setting a project too and all your thoughts and tips are really interesting and motivating. It's a real pleasure to follow your adventure in the Alps and can't wait to see your progresses in this marvelous place. Thanks again for sharing !

I totally get wanting to have your privacy.. we purchased a property that the neighbors use to get to another neighbor..so they don't go on the road...however, when a 4x4 goes roaring through our backyard, where is the line drawn... its about respecting boundaries..put up your fences and stay neighborly.. its what has to happen

Hi Martin love the build and lifestyle love the slow nature of the video too I’ve watched from close to the beginning and enjoyed everyone. I would just like to comment on the fence my wife and family are Italian and still have farms in Abruzzo and foraging is a part of the culture very rare to see a fence unless your trying to keep livestock in and I know one of the things you’ve enjoyed has been wandering around the mountains looking at other cabins and there construction and it’s lovely to hear the cow bells coming through it’s a shame to see a fence and signs go up I hope other people don’t do the same isn’t that freedom what we enjoy about the Italian culture Thankyou again keep up the good work

Everyone is different and every situation is different. Martijn has very few acres compared to the vast acreages in the mountains. His living area is small and he lives outdoors. I would not feel comfortable taking a shower with people coming in my area. Others may have chose a different method to obtain privacy, it is obviously so, as he has taken on a lot of negative comments in his choice of temporary fencing. I just feel we should let others do as they see fit to do. His walks have taken him to ruins, he hasn't walked upon a person's home.

You are dressed better doing hard manual labor by yourself in the mountains than I am going to job interviews. Really giving me something to think about.

Long-term, a good hedge is better and less expensive than a fence. In the US, Maclura Pomifera has been the gold standard for hedges. They grow so tight, they say not even a rabbit can get through. Not sure if those trees are legal in Italy, but they aren’t exactly invasive, since nothing eats their fruits.

Beautiful video Martin - its been a while since I watched your channel so great to see the progress you have made, one thing though putting up barbed wire fences seems uncool and goes against the spirit of living in the natural unspoiled environment.

I loved this video. There are so many interesting elements to it,including the singing shepherds. And your wardrobe is great, good quality and functional, and not the usual attire of a builder. Imagine picking those huge mushrooms and feasting on them in delicious recipes. The scenery, rugged natural beauty, cow bells, bread making and mellow glow from the tent all draw us in…

if I am not mistaken the waterproof layer should be put horizontal starting from the bottom on the roof and laying next section on top of the other so that water drops on top and away from the roof itself. In any case great work on the roof !
