The ability to produce bespoke back scenes of almost any size gives me an idea to make even a small one for the end of the turntable area to improve the photography of the layout, no longer will we see the bedroom door.

My research has shown that the best way of sticking backscenes is to use 3M spraymount, it was pretty much designed to do the job! But don't quote me, as I have not actually tried! I have access to an A0 plotter, so will eventually have up to 800mm high backscene (specifically for the deep section of my 3 bridge scene) but will use some 3D cut outs against blue sky for the rest

Hi Tim, yes, good idea for the scene you describe. As for the spray mount glue I totally agree as in it's made for the job. However, apart from the glue spraying everywhere but where you really need it (in my case) I find using it gets really messy but that may be down to me and not representative of the general populus. It does seem to spray out unevenly and is visible as clumps if you are not careful. I have also experienced a little discolouration as well but maybe due to buying a cheap alternative or using old stock. I do use self adhesive pvc as well and it sticks to perspex a treat. I also have a spray glue retarder which allows you to use a squeegee action to get a smooth bubble free adhesion. I intend to do a video of applying to perspex as one customer has bought one and I will help him fit it.

@@JumbleLane I have tried many of the cheap alternatives and had poor results, although I have not bought any 3M product yet myself, all the write ups and videos I have watched about making tree's and mounting backscenes (and there are many tales of woe with other methods) all indicate that for longevity, easy of re-positioning and ease of even application, that 3m products (silver spray mount and Super 77 Spray Adhesive) are in a different league and are worth the £10 investment!

@@TimberSurf Must give them a try, in the meantime let me know how you get on when you give it a go.

Well Geoff, it beats my humble Peco backscenes. Good choice for the piece to hide the door, it looks great and blends in well the the backscene already in place. Cheers geoff

Thanks Geoff, I was a bit lucky finding that photo, would have liked to spent more time going through my photos for a better picture but just wanted to get the point across and get the video done. Seems to fit in though

Great backscene masterclass Geoff. May I ask what printer that is?
@JumbleLane
@JumbleLane 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you John. The printer is an Epson StylusPro 7800. It is a 24inch wide format printer and has 8 220ml ink cartridges. Paper rolls come into lengths of up to 45M. Can print on papers, banner material, vinyl's and canvas.

oh wow. I need to get me one of those printers. oh wait I might have to build a second shed then, and the wife would kill me. if someone sent you a list of photos. can you put them all together, add a sky and print off a ten foot sheet? yours looks great, I picked the water and swans at first. but once you got yours up there, done. that building fits right in . Smashing it is

Nicely done Geoff, will you be doing the back scene on the other section too? What gsm paper did you use? The Id backscenes paper is so thin if you put tape on it I'm sure you'd see it. I originally wanted to print my own backscenes as we have some big Mimaki digital printers where I work but my boss wasn't keen at the time, he did let me laminate the Id backscenes ones though which gave them a bit rigidity. Cheers Paul 👍

Hi Paul, I used 260gsm lustre finish paper. I have papers in different weights and finishes but like to stick to this one. I also use Pvc matte self adhesive or pvc banner materials, both work well stuck to perspex or similar material. Using double sided tape on my back scenes on other parts of the layout was done as an experiment as they were done after the layout had been constructed. If doing the scenes before the layout then using a liquid glue might not be an issue. Doing it as an experiment allows me to try different ways so I can advise others. Yet to see how long it lasts, my scenes have been up 6 months and there are no visual issues so far.

Thanks Geoff, 260 is a decent thickness, much better than id which is at best 120 by my reckoning. Is your pvc smooth or mottled, I found that it looked okay but depending on the climate could suffer from shrinkage and ripples, it wasn't fixed to a board so probably not the best, our rolls are 1400mm wide so bit of a waste to print all in one piece. Your finished scene looks great and in the bedroom environment it should last forever. I'm just now starting to get a few peeling issues but I made a serious error using spray mount to initially fix the back scene, it has had a pvc glue applied in some sections which has worked better. It's always interesting to see what people are coming up with and I wouldn't be surprised if you don't get some requests from this. Cheers Paul 👍

Hi Geoff - A great result I am looking for back scenes for three sides of my layout 2 are 10ft by 15 inches high the other 8ft by 15 inches high. I would if possible like them to be of local landmarks / areas if I took them myself or got them from the internet would the quality be good enough or what would you suggest and can you do this for me and lastly a rough idea or cost. Many thanks Kevin
