In the 50s and 60s we "built" rifles also. (news flash, people have been building rifles for something like 600 years now) We used surplus Mauser and Springfield actions. We did it in the metal shop in high school. Yeah, built rifles in school, imagine that. And got school credit for it. Do the metal work in "metal shop" and make the stock in "wood shop". We rebarrelled them, or sometimes turned the military barrel on a lathe to make it have a "sporter" shape, and re-stocked them and drilled and tapped them and mounted scopes. We bent the bolt handles, or cut them off and welded on a new one. Then we built another one. Until 1968 we could order surplus rifles and have them delivered to our door. Now people "build" ARs ( i have built three so far) and it is easier, for sure. The trend in the 50s and 60s resulted in a whole bunch of new cartridges, including the whole range of the "30-06 length belted magnums"....300 Win Mag, et al...and then that case was necked up and down from .243" to .458", all because they FIT in the magazines/actions of Springfields and Mausers, just as this whole range of new cartridges now FITS in the AR. Now, none of this is a bad thing, do not misunderstand. It is ALL good. But now, just as then, these new cartridges do not really offer anything "magic" or that wasn't already available. We had the .300 H&H before 1963, it just didn't FIT in a military Mauser or Springfield and a "magnum Mauser" cost a whole lot more money than a surplus one (just as an AR-10 action'd rifle costs more now) All good stuff! Have fun, it is a great hobby. Just remember, it was all done before and some of these cartridges will do well and some will be starring on the "Forgotten Weapons" channel sooner, rather than later.

The whole point of the 350 legend is to be legal in states that don't allow centerfire rifles for deer hunting. They do allow straight walled cartridges. Yeah it's not anything magical, but it's legal to use in the Midwest.
@garyK.45ACP4 жыл бұрын
@@dennisdallege2628 Well, yes and no. There are many other straight walled cartridges that are legal to use in the midwest, we sure didn't need another one just to meet THAT standard. The .350 Legend was developed to meet that standard AND function in AR platform rifles without modification except the barrel. This allows someone to set up an "upper" and switch calibers even using the same BCG and magazine. Not a bad thing at all. However, we can name any number of other straight walled cartridges that meet those standards. .357 and .44 Mag .375 WCF and even the .45-70 (state laws vary on cartridge length, etc) BUT, they won't work in an AR rifle. Even the 113 year old .351 Winchester Self Loading meets the standard AND in a semi-auto! IF you are going to hunt in one of the few jurisdictions that has this restriction AND you want to use an AR type rifle AND you don't want to use the far superior .450 Bushmaster (which does the same thing, only much better) THEN the .350 Legend is a good 2nd choice. In any other jurisdictions, any other rifles it is really not a good choice. Or, I should say...there are much better options available.

Good to know the target ammo has the same drop as the more expensive hunting ammo! I'm about to build an AR with an 18" barrel. Thank you
@edwardlance23793 жыл бұрын
I have a 16" AR in this caliber. I bought a cheap BCA upper, but it's a shooter. With the factory Winchester 150 Xtreme tip ammo, it'll shoot MOA or better. Haven't tried any hand loads yet. The only issue is that although this round is spec'd as .357 -.003, it seems barrels and chambers are really made for .355 (9mm) bullets (all the factory ammo is .355). We're not sure exactly what happened when the round was being developed, but apparently the end result is really a 9mm chamber/bore. People working up loads with .357 or .358 bullets are reporting pressure issues before they even reach the middle of the load data for a given round. This is probably due to the neck dimensions being too tight for the slightly larger bullets (you will definitely get a neck bulge with the larger bullets) so the case can't expand enough to easily "let go" of the bullet initially which is causing a pressure spike. I know the barrel company that was working with Winchester on the development of the round specifically states that only .355 diameter bullets are to be used in their barrels. Rounds loaded with .357 or .358 bullets won't even chamber in their barrels and these are ther guys who helped develop it!. I'd be very careful working with the larger sized bullets. Fortunately, there are quite a few .355 bullets on the market that are perfect for the 350 (some specifically for the 350), from as light as 68 grains (LeHigh Defense solid coppers), all the way to 180 grains. The bullets used in all the 350 factory ammo are available in component form if you reload. A lot of hand loaders are having good results with powder coated cast bullets and pushing them to 1800+ FPS. I've seen bullets cast from zinc (lighter weight for size) getting up into the 2800+ fps range as well. There is one video here on YT of a guy loading LeHigh Defense 90 grain Xtreme Defense solid coppers and getting over 3,000 FPS with it out of a 20" AR-15. Just be aware that shooting this round in a bolt gun vs an AR will have a bit of difference in how each gun handles the round.

Most of those areas you don’t get over 100-150yd shots anyway. You can always have arguments about different cartridges until the cows come home. I fail to see the shock & awe about a cartridge that barely beats the 112 year old .351 WSL (and the .351 could easily equal it with modern powders except that the M1907 rifle was blowback operated and was finicky about bullet weights and velocities) and does not even come close to the .35 Remington. Other than providing a straight wall cartridge, suitable for the AR platform, in the very few areas which restrict deer hunting with rifles to straight wall cartridges of specific dimensions, it is outperformed by almost anything else. Long range use? Sure. IF you know the EXACT range, no problem. Look how well long range shooters do with cartridges like the .45-70 and .45-90, etc...BUT they KNOW the exact range and they KNOW the specifics of their loadings precisely. If they are 10 yards off in range estimation or 50 fps off in velocity, they will miss the target completely. Being able to hit a target from a solid rest at a KNOWN range does not make the rifle a "300 yard hunting rifle" The cartridge was designed to fit a niche which covers perhaps less than 1/10th of 1% of the land area used by deer hunters and people act like it is the best thing since sliced bread. If you are using any rifle except an AR and hunting anywhere except an area that REQUIRES this combination of cartridge features...there are better choices. Hate to spoil the party, but after more than 150 years of metallic cartridge development there really ARE NO "empty places" in the cartridge line up and anything introduced today can be duplicated by a cartridge 75-100+ years old using modern propellants and bullets. I will note I recall a similar response from "gun scribes" to the .264 Winchester Magnum and the 6.5mm Remington Magnum. Who else remembers those? Wait! What? You mean there were 6.5mm cartridges before the 6.5mm Creedmore? Say it ain't so!

Because 357 Rem Max does not work in an AR15 platform with the rimmed cartridge design.

A 7.62X39 will shoot the same trajectory and be much more available and affordable. I think this round is a go nowhere gimmick. Just like the .327 round, 350 Remington mag and a whole host of others. Also, I know what a minute of angle is but not everyone does. Quit trying to talk like a sniper and lay it out in terms everyone understands. It just come off as elitist to me.

what a worthless cartridge,,,,,its better i read than a 243 win or 30-30,,,,,which is a damn lie,,,,,but 6.5 creedmoor users will find it usefull,,,and write big stories about it beating the likes of a 300 win mag and such,,,,so it should be a good seller,,
