Last season I took two deer with this load and same rifle. A fork horn buck and a doe. The range was 55 yards for both. Both were shot once through both lungs standing broadside. The buck ran 20 yards, stopped, staggered and dropped dead. The doe ran 75-80 yards, stopped, stood for 15 seconds and dropped dead. No bullets were recovered. The next time I take this gun hunting I think I will try the Hornady whitetail load as I have some of those too.

I can see a practical use for these rounds. Bear defense. If you need a round that will go thru a grizzly, it should do the job.
@michaelgutierrez40832 ай бұрын
You're gonna need expansion on a grizzly. No expansion =small wound channel. Just gonna piss off the grizzly. Nobody wants a pissed off, wounded grizzly coming at them. 😂
@Magnum_Express2 ай бұрын
@@michaelgutierrez4083 . usually people advocate against an expanding bullet on a grizzly for several reasons. 1. non expanding bullets usually push a straight path thru something. meaning they don't get deflected by heavy bone, and can actually reach the vitals. something that an expanding bullet could fail to do. 2. in and out means more holes for the bear to leak from, and expire faster. 3. typically in a situation you need to fire at a grizzly, youre going to get a frontal shot. aiming for the head being your best bet, but even if you miss, its nice to know your bullet will keep on driving thru, possibly hitting a lung, heart, liver, shoulder, hip, etc. something to slow it down. giving you maybe a chance to put another round in it.

I took a small Buck at 75 yards through both shoulders it did really mean damage along the way & only found a small fragment of the bullet. I was shocked it did not knock him down at that range or offer overly large blood trails but fell in about 30 yards

The upside when I bought those for group testing, was they were le$$ than their NonTypical. From what I could see the bullets were the same. The grouped about the same as Hornady 170s and Win 180s. My only thought about the stiffness of the nose jacket was to increase reliabilty in ARs. Have not tested any of the 3 on game, but likely will at some point. Maybe, if I start getting groups of hogs, I can line a few up.👌

Actually, I like the extra penetration of this load. There are plenty of lighter constructed deer loads available, some people like me want a load like this for tougher game at close range without having to go to a long barrelled heavy recoilling expensive magnum. Love this test, thank you.

Something I have done to catch over penetrating bullets is to use a standard size hand towel folded over once and draped over the last media I'm using. The towel usually catches the exiting bullet and is flung several feet away but with the bullet in the folds. It works for me most of the time. Try it and see if this works for you. I love your videos, keep them coming!

I would really like to see the 350 Legend tested with soft lead cast bullets. They may expand more , even at a lower velocity. I'm betting a soft lead "brick" thrown out of that carbine would be an extremely effective woods gun.
@bestestusername2 ай бұрын
If you were hunting game with a thick hide and big bones this would be ok as it would help with expansion but thinner skinned or smaller game this could be wasted. I am liking the 350 the more of these I see!

It’s not supposed to be nor marketed as a solid, to me it’s more of a failure than a success as per what it should do. These 180 grain soft points are too heavy and/or not soft enough for 350 Legend velocities.

If I lived in a straight wall state I’d have a 350L and a 460 BH. I’m in a rifle friendly state so 357, 44mag, 30-30 ,45-70 has me covered in CF lever guns. I just can’t justify adding the new rounds to my expenses. But man it’s tempting. I want them all.

I dont think its pushing 180 grains fast enough to expand. Might be better with 150 grains at higher velocities or 180 grain hollow points

Federal has long been one of my favorite "over the counter" ammo producers. In the case of their .350 Legend, as tested in this video, I'd be a bit leery of hunting a soft skinned critter like a white tail simply because of the very strong possibility of pass through with no expansion. Having experienced the exact same thing happening with "plastic tipped" Hornady ammo, I'd just as soon run the risk of getting caught, and going to jail for, hunting with FMJ ammo.....Since I'm way too old to be going to jail, the ammo you tested will NOT be an option should I find myself buying a rifle chambered in .350 Legend. I have a feeling that the .350 would be in its "happy zone" with bullets weighing around 150grn for deer with "heavy" 160-165grn bullets being well suited for large hogs or MAYBE even black bears when fired out of 20in barrels. In the meantime, I'll just stick with my trusty old "JM" Marlin 336 in .35 Remington and its big brother in .444 Marlin launching 200grn JSP and 265grn JSP bullets respectively.

180gr seems just a little too heavy for the .350L. 160gr has done some spectacular work from what I've seen, so I'm not sure why manufacturers aren't gravitating more towards that.

Mason, I love your videos, very informative. Be advised, brother, these straight wall cartridges are not expanding like they should. Hunters want fast kills with large wound channels, with decent pass through. I know from your tests that you understand this. Just because folks don't want to clean muzzeloaders anymore doesn't mean these new straight walls are better. A 240 grain XTP out of my muzzeloader is hands down a better choice for quick kills. I was very disappointed in my 45/70 325 grain FTX load out of my Henry. Not all, but most of these new straight wall bullets, exhibit characteristics very much like FMJ's. Keep up the good work.

Mason, energy units are measured in foot "times" pound (lbs), not feet "divided" by pounds. I guess it would be "ft-lbs" rather than "ft/lbs".
@masonleather_outdoors2 ай бұрын
It’s a forward slash as much as it is a division symbol, it’s just punctuation, it’s not a big deal. By your own logic “ft-lbs” could be interpreted as feet minus pounds.

objects exert equal and opposite forces on each other. the impact is what drives the tip back and causes expansion. let this same bullet hit gel at 2000 fps or faster, you'd see a huge difference. I've noticed a difference with my .350L when shooting deer inside of 70 yards vs over 70. it doesn't seem to keep that "hammer" effect as well further out. Which I know sounds like a no-brainer, but within 100 yards, the difference should not be as noticeable as it is. Even shooting ballistic tips, I do not trust the .350L out past 125 yards. However, in the thick woods, its a beast.
@BottomDollarOutdoors2 ай бұрын
@@masonleather_outdoors If you had shot the blocks at 50 yards, while the velocities were still around 2000fps, I wonder if you could get some expansion and catch it. worth a try one day.
@upperroomtoo2 ай бұрын
If the bullet can't expand and stop at 1875 fps it is an absolute failure of design.
@masonleather_outdoors2 ай бұрын
Based on all my testing, 180 grains, the bullets therein and the velocities achieved with 350 Legend don’t mix. 350L is ideal with 140-160 grainers.

@@masonleather_outdoors the 180 XTP is my favorite deer bullet for our .357 Maxi Handi Rifle.
