Hey boss, been watching a ton of your 45-70 videos and am kind of lost. What ammo would you recommend, or is your favorite, strictly for terminal performance. Whitetail, Mulies, Hogs, Black Bear, and Elk. Thank you!
@EricChmelarskyАй бұрын
I will tell you from experience. Keep 300 grain bullets @ 1800 fps or so. I've cranked up a 2200 fps load with 300 grain HP. Blew the smithereens our of a deer. 5" of smashed ribs at exit. The vacume affect sucked stuff out the exit hole .

I have to admit that since watching your videos Mason I’ve become a big fan of Federal Power Shock in several calibres. It’s not only accurate but for a cup and core bullet it performs extremely well. Appreciate the trouble you go to with your videos. Thanks for sharing!

I know it smacks elk really well. If I didnt reload 45-70 this Federal load and the Federal Fusion would be my goto choice.

I use Federal blue box (powershock) for hunting in 45-70, .308 and 7.62x39 Great entry level ammo. This 45-70 appears to be the same as Federal’s HammerDown, minus the nickel plating. Works great for deer and even elk.

Absolutely outstanding! Impressive. This would be extremely effective on anything out to 100 yards for sure. Thank you.

Looks like a great .45-70 round. You lose about 25 fps per inch of barrel, so that's good velocity out of a 16" barrel. Excellent terminal performance - looks like a bonded bullet. Federal ammo seems to always perform well. Two thumbs up for medium game!

Winchester has been producing these for a LONG time. The bullet is obviously tuned very well for the 45-70 cartridge.

I was looking on the speer website at bullets just yesterday. If these aren't spee they are a carbon copy of their jacketed hollow point 300 grain projectiles.

.458 socom needs a revitalization. It has the same ballistics as shown on this .45/70 box , still with a 300 grain bullet AND from a 16 inch barrel. It can take from 250ish-600 grain bullets . It is super efficient as a subsonic cartridge because that's part of its design intent . It's originally designed for the ar-15 and uses standard 5.56/.223 magazines. It uses ANY .458 diameter bullet up to 600 grains, giving better velocity retention from higher b.c. selections. 1/14 or 1/13 are typical twist rates which is why it can use longer bullets at subsonic velocity...typical .45/70 has 1/20 twist. .458 socom is severely underrated.

To me …. A 45-70 shooting 300 grains Is like a big diesel truck with a 4 cylinder gas installed in it 😂😂 great stuff ! I’m partial to 405 grain and up . Check out some of the buffalo bore loads ! Very hot 430 grain loads ext

Wow. I have been very impressed with your tests of the Federal ammunition. Now, it shows the Powershok in .45-70 to be an excellent performer, as well. This comes close to what I load using the Hornady 300 grain bullet. I don't have a chronograph but out of my Marlin 1895 with a 22" barrel, on paper, using a minimum powder charge of IMR 3031 velocity should be around 1971 fps according to the reloading data. My reloads should compare nicely to the Powershok ammo. My concern would be with hunting larger game like moose. I would think the SD for a 300 grain bullet at .458" would be too low for a big animal, let's say > 1200 lbs. What are your thoughts or anyone else out there as far as a 300 grain bullet for large game?

I noticed you shot all calibers with forehand grip vs cross arm regardless of recoil with the use of a bag. For lighter hunting rifles do you find the forehand grip more accurate than cross arm and barrel free recoil? Thanks.
@masonleather_outdoorsАй бұрын
I have no idea, do whatever works for you, I don’t even know what any of the different “grips” are called.

I've personally drawn the conclusion that all conventional cartridges are suitable for hunting. From 30 30 / 243 on up. They've all been used because they all work when employed properly

@@Simon-talks look at some of the other Henry models. I hear the Ruger-Marlins are very nice also. Some day I may seek out a laminated stock for the X model, but the jury is still out on that.
