Fabulous test. Bear Creek Ballistics make these bullets as reloading components and I've been using their 240 HV 450 Bushmaster pointed bullets in my bolt action. 2500 fps w/ 18" barrel. Accuracy and performance from a great company.
@CastIeBravo3 ай бұрын
This load mimics my hand load using the Hornady 140 grain flex tip at 2525 fps. It may not look like much in ballistics gel, but it does a number on white tail out to about 200 yards. I expect these will do just as well, if not better. Tailored with the right powder you can get 2600 out of a 16” barrel. Awesome job brother! Keep em coming.

It really just depends on what you value in the load. When they shift to copper bullets it eats up some case capacity, I think thats why the 160's might be a little slower than the hornady custom 165gr. I get 2250fps in my 12.5".

Everyone needs to remember that the wound channels in the Clear Ballistics gel do not represent what they would actually look like in natural ballistic gelatin OR real live tissue. The wound cavities in live tissue are much more traumatic. Speaking from experience.
@benbowman459027 күн бұрын
I was wondering. Wasn’t happy with the cheap Winchester ammo so I actually just bought some of the 140gr bear creek ammo. I like the speed for longer shots. I also thought the faster speed would lead to bigger “impact” even with slightly lighter round. Anxious to get the ammo and try it first hand. Have never felt “underpowered” until I bought this 350. Hunting with .30-06 and .308 my whole life, got the 350 for my wife and just like how small and lightweight it is.
@randomguy137121 күн бұрын
Yep. Gel is a means to have a standard testing media that is comparable to real tissue. It is not meant to be an analog of real tissue, and does not account for bones it may shatter which make their own wound tracks, and other factors

I don’t use 350 Legend for deer hunting, but if I did any of these would be a great option
@williamgaines97843 ай бұрын
I would buy several brands of hunting ammo and see which groups best. My 20" CVA Scout seemed to like Win Power Point 180 gr a tiny bit better than several others, but I wound up taking a deer last season with the 150 gr Copper XP. I high shoulder everything and it dropped like a rock, no kick or quiver, slight quartering to at 75 yards. Could not find entrance wound until skinned - a literal pinprick, but exit was about nickel size. The 170 gr Barnes hollow point should also hammer them. If these Bear Creek were comparably priced, I could see them doing the same. I am looking to try the Hornady 250 gr. Sub-X on a hog or deer this season. Good luck this season.

I use the 160gr powermaxx in 350 legend and haven’t been disappointed yet. I used the 170gr hornaday whitetail for a year and did not like the performanc.
@MarkDrozdowski3 ай бұрын
I also used the 170 gr hornady and had poor results. This summer switched to the 165 gr FTX and it was like night and day. 5 of 8 dropped in there tracks 2 of them at or slightly over 200 yds.

The velocity numbers you got are pretty good considering Bear Creek states they used a 22" barrel for their numbers. I've only taken one doe with the 160gr, but she didn't go 20.

I have taken around 20 wild hogs with the 160 grain round nose using a AR style hunting rifle 16 inch barrel. Mostly head shots, maybe 8 body hits. I only recovered 2 bullets , But Both looked exactly like your Gel Block shot bullets. I must add that I hunt thick woods. Most shots 15 to 20 yards..But have shot 6 or 7 between 45 and 70 yards. I tried 4 other loads of factory Ammo At the gun range. The Bear Creek 160 grain was the most accurate ammo thru my 16 inch Faxon AR barrel. 3 days ago I ordered some 200 grain 450 Bushmaster ammo from Bear Creek Ballistics

I shoot more than 99% of hunters and have trained with the US Army Marksmanship Unit, amongst other experience, showing my groups if I were actually trying for precision would lead to unrealistic expectations, and heaven forbid if I don’t shoot some wildly tight group with ammo A, B, or C, uncle Joe and all the other morons who can’t shoot well consistently to save their lives (they accidentally shot a 1/2” group one time with Corelokt) wouldn’t be able to stop commenting about how bad I suck… group size and hunting ammo is largely useless information, it all shoots plenty good enough for it’s intended purpose.

Pretty sweet test results considering everything. I moved to Ohio this time last year and need a straight wall cartridge rifle unless I just stick with my CVA inline muzzleloader for this season. I would prefer a lever gun especially in 360 Buckhammer but they’re expensive and I am hoping that Henry makes their All Weather in 360 BH. In the meantime I was thinking about a less expensive bolt action rifle in either 350 Legend, 400 Legend or 450 Bushmaster. I am not recoil sensitive so the 450 BM would work, but I want a left hand rifle and it’s easier to find a sub $700 rifle in 350 L as well as the ammo (which is why 400 L is currently out even though it is the one I prefer). I am waiting for the new Savage Axis 2 Pro in left hand to arrive at stores. So I would have to use the BC 160 RNs or another ammo which would be fine with me in that rifle with its 18 in barrel. 😃🦌🐻🐗

So if there isnt a quick energy dump/ large cavity then whats the point of the .350? Or is that due to barrel length?
@masonleather_outdoors3 ай бұрын
350 Legend velocity isn’t affected by barrel length nearly as much as many other cartridges. It maintains effective velocity with barrels down to 12 inches and isn’t increased by significantly material amounts throughout its barrel length range up to and beyond 24”. The point of the 350 Legend is to sell rifles in states requiring straight wall cartridges for deer hunting.
@panthermartin77843 ай бұрын
@@masonleather_outdoors mmmhhh, ok, but lets remember the reason for straight wall cartridges mainly is where they are used vs population density, ie, hunters hunting in close proximity to property lines or buildings and other structures. If the 350 doesn't have a large wound cavity on impact isnt the deer capibilities of running onto another property greatly increased? I know this situation exists because I see or hear of it happening every year. I myself use the Winchester 30-30 hollow points on deer if I want them to drop on the spot, the wound channel is massive within 2 inches of impact. Hell maybe I have this all wrong anyways. Just some thoughts.

For an all-copper bullet, I'm not very impressed with the penetration compared to .30-30, which is what 350 Legend is supposed to roughly mimic for people who live in straight-wall cartridge states. The difference in frontal surface area could have played a part in that, but still. Of note: last year, Vortex got an incredible 35 3/8 inches of penetration by shooting 350 Legend with 170 grain Hornady American Whitetail. I'm not sure why these Bear Creek bullets didn't penetrate more, if not much more than they did. Especially considering they are all-copper bullets with high weight retention. If these actually performed better than most other 350 Legend loadings you have tested, that's good for 350 Legend owners, but I'll stick with .30-30. Or if I do buy a .35 caliber straight-wall gun it'll be 360 Buckhammer (actually high on the list) using Hammer all-copper bullets. Regardless, good video as always. There's always something to be learned from the results of every test, whether good or bad, that can help inform people about their purchasing decisions. 👍

350 legend is trash, it headspaces off the mouth of the case, a paper thin bit of soft brass. Not difficult to force over insertion on accident making a stuck case and no/light primer strike. Basically the round can be pushed in too far.
