There's nothing wrong with the overal design of the 350 Legend cartridge. The bullet designers need to spend more time designing bullets that provide the best ballance between penetration and expansion. I just watched a video where a guy had all copper 140 gr bullets loaded to over 2300 fps. This may be a good path for finding that ballance

Good thing with 350 Legend is that, because it's a 35 caliber, you can experiment with heavy revolver bullets in .357 or .358 caliber. I'd reckon a lead round nose or semi-jacketed-flat-point would do great in certain situations, if you do a little experimentation with the loads. Presuming you're a reloader of course.

This basically sold me on assembling my next upper as a 350 Legend. The ammo isn't _crazy_ expensive, but it definitely looks like a thumper that's legal for deer hunting in my state. For whatever reason, you can't use a 30-30 here during deer season but the 350 is apparently fine 🤷🏻 It definitely seems like a good all-around mid-range rifle cartridge and you're not really giving up too much in the way of capacity from a 5.56. It's not quite as versatile as 300 Blackout from a loading perspective, but it's probably more useful for us lowly civilians. Plus, if I want a quiet suppressed rifle putting down around 450lb•ft of energy on target, I'd just go with a 9mm upper. And the AR platform is so ubiquitous that you could use the same lower with a dozen differently built uppers...

As is I love my bushmaster shooting 45 bullets on the cheap for plinking or such but getting stronger hunting bullets for deer is tough and only limited supply and expensive. In Michigan both 350 legend and 450 bush are popular since it’s legal in limited fire arm zones. Much better than slugs or buckshot. Wish they would have made 30-30 legal, silly it isn’t the bushmaster can actually shoot further. If you reload your can really push them as factory loads are made for AR rifles and bolt guns can be pushed harder. Some people are taking deer at 300 plus yards

You can occasionally find .30-30 online, but never in store. The calibers I can find in any store I walk into are: .223/5.56, 6.5 Creedmore, .308, and 350 Legend. .223 is the cheapest, then 350 Legend, 6.5, then .308. I’ll take $30 a box for 350 Legend over $50 a box for .308 any day. You know you’ve made it big in the ammo world when Walmart always has your caliber in stock!

The 350 needs a pistol type bullet at those velocities. Not much expansion and not enough frontal area in comparison to 44 mag, 45 Colt, 45-70 (bigger bore stuff that doesn’t rely on expansion to do its business). Great video.

I think your results are showing that the .350 Legend rounds you fired were not matched to the bullet used in that round, thus it lacked expansion. The lack of expansion put less resistence against the bullet as it traveled through the medium, allowing it to bleed off energy slower, thus it penetrated deeper. The .30-30 round you fired was better matched to the bullet, so the energy bled off sooner because the bullet expanded the way it was supposed to. It also appears the .30-30 bullet expanded to a much greater degree than the .350 Legend bullet did. Yes, penetration wasn't as deep with the .30-30, but it looks like it made it through at least one of those blocks, so even with (probably) around .300" more frontal area, it still penetrated at least 18", before that cookie sheet stopped it. Had the .350 Legend been loaded with a bullet better matched to the power of that round, I believe you would've noted similar results as you achieved with the .30-30.

I am questioning those 350 bullets....they should be providing some more expansion...the 350s are not "shocking" the block. They are acting more liking more like more swc bullets. Try a different bullet and see what it does.

I shot a deer this year at about 50yds with the 180s and it was devastating... was able to recover the bullet and expansion was much better than this experiment proved. That said 150s may be better based on many opinions... i havent tried them.
