Wow, a most interesting inverter. The 3 phase VFD AC motor drives on the factory floor can cause a lot of problems by producing dirty power. If the created power is not a true sinewave with bad harmonics things can start to smoke and households close to the factory can have problems? Thus, adding filters and inductors to remove the spikes. 😎 Thank you so much.

Thanks Eddie. The current draw on a 3500W/12V inverter is 291 amps, those cables will never carry that amount of current. My system runs two Outback 3600W/48V inverters, ~73 amps. My cable is 2/0 cable for EACH inverter and that's at 48V. One of my inverters just failed after ~15 or 16 years running my house everyday. Yes, they're expensive but you don't want to play around with them anymore than batteries. My house runs LiFePo4's but my EV runs Li-Ions. Li-Ions in a car aren't a problem IF you know how to charge and run them. I rarely charge to 100%, my charge algorithm charges to 90% from my home at 7kW mild charge level, Li-Ions are fine at that. Aside from the problem GM had with the Bolt (mechanical battery construction) the major Li-Ion fires are mechanical damage to batteries. The press jumps on EV fires yet EV fires are 1/3 of ICE fires. Most EV's run Li-Ions. GM Ultima Blazer and Equinox, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq5, VW ID4 all run Li-Ions. Tesla only runs LiFePo4 on the base model standard range Model 3, all the rest of the Tesla's run Li-Ions if I remember correctly. Rob

Thanks for the great info Rob! You can definately improve your chances with Li-Ion batteries, but there have been some fires that are not easily explained - except for manufacturing issues. There were a couple woman who jumped from their car because it caught fire. There have been EV bike fires. After a short search I found many fires that were only explained by bad cells or bad manufacturing. It could be because of the rush to put out more cells as that was an issue last year. Tesla and others are moving to LiFePo4s - and I think that is because of the looming bad press - that might be earned. It is also likely do to the environmental issues as the Cobalt (that is the reason for the fires) is very difficult to mine in quantities. I watched a report where they were being fair and said that EV fires happen less than gasoline fed cars, but there has been an uprising. I'd rather not take the chance and just be safe and get the LiFePo4s as they do last a lot longer as well. I'm all for electric tools - but the lithium Ion battery is worse for the environment than gas engines. I've heard up to a conservative 4x bigger impact on the environment vs gas cars. Also the electric charging stations have become major rip offs in some areas. Until there are far more stations - people will be the victims to high cost and poorly serviced stations. Tesla does a fantastic job.

Regarding the cables - how long do your cables run? I think these are 1 AWG and about half a meter long. I was thinking I could cut them in half and double them up to run a short distance to the battery/s?
@mosfet500
@mosfet500 Жыл бұрын
@@KissAnalog Thanks for the kind words Eddie. 1 AWG doubled will run 290A at 90C (~195F) if the inverter runs max, that's why I run 2/0 when my specs say I can get away with 1/0 (48V, 3600 watt inverter). In order to get 4 - 12V batteries in parallel you'll need ~20" of pos. and 20" of negative to the inverter. If it was me I'd spring for the money and buy battery cable, terminals and sealing heat shrink tube on ebay and make up my own. This is why I run 48V inverters the cables size at 12V is ridiculous. At 48V you're only running ~75 amps on each leg. So 4 - 12V 100aH batteries will run the inverter max for ~ an hour and 20 minutes if that inverter can take it, I don't think the off brands are designed to run max, that's why you got such thin cables, they're basically fuses! Vevor isn't making that inverter, they just put their label on it. Sure if you're running things like fridges and lights it will probably be fine but if you're worried about fires and I am, I'd use the good stuff Outback, etc. Something like that I'd keep in shed away from the house. After running PV for almost 20 years I found out the hard way, cutting corners only creates problems. My inverters have been running nonstop for 15 to 17 years. I just had my first failure yesterday morning. I haven't pulled it apart but I checked the battery inputs, on one inverter it was a dead short, that went right back to the batteries and they shut shut down, no heat, no fires - that's what you want. Absolutely run LiFePo4's but don't scrimp on wire sizes, inverters or charge controllers. Just my two cents. Think about how many devices run Li-Ion's, just about every laptop power supply, every cell phone, yard tools and even riding mowers. battery problems are because of several things, poor BMS designs, mechanically poor construction of physical damage. We know why the Bolt batteries failed, it was a mechanical problem in the build, they were folding over the edges as the battery was going into the case and shorting on itself if I remember. That was LG and they ate the cost, not GM. Even with that out of tens of thousands of cars only about seven caught fire.

When I was driving a semi, I noticed that most - nearly all - smaller power inverters would put out only 80v to maybe 100v, RMS at best. That's in the brownout zone. To get inverters that produced a full 115v or 120v, we need to buy the big ones - 1500W+. We can also buy these cheap inverters that plug into the cigarette lighter socket. You can imagine the problem with trying to pull 400w through those lighter plugs. The plug itself is the first to melt down. Those plugs are just not made to draw heavy current. The positive point of contact is high resistance and generates a lot of heat. A semi will have a bank of 6 or more batteries, so there's good inverters that work off of 26v input to reduce the DC current flow.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Жыл бұрын
Wow - great feedback! Yes, in a semi - the option would be the 24 V model of this - which would require less current. But you could get the lower power Vevor and do great. Just be sure to get the pure sine wave versions - as they do have the older modified sine wave inverters as well. They are OK for loads that don't care.

The best inverters are linear. To run a microwave or an inductive motor, must be linear. I think this one seems to be linear because is big but would be important to do a teardown and interior analysis.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. I will do a teardown in a few days- I've been backed up;) What do you mean 'linear'? Do you mean 60 Hz transformer vs switcher?
@JohnUsp
@JohnUsp Жыл бұрын
@@KissAnalog Linear inverters use a BIG Transformer, like in a Linear PSU, and a non-linear inverter uses SMPS transformers like in the switch PSU. Most of the non-linear inverters cannot supply the Peak Current of an induction motor or in a microwave. Your inverter seems to be Linear because it's big, so you can research videos showing this issue/limitation and do a peak-current test in your inverter. And help people to buy the best inverters. Both can be Pure Sine-Wave, but linear inverters have a small THD+N.

I liked your video. You are a professional. I’m interested in getting some source of power for my work van. I use daily air compressor, polishing machines, charge batteries for my cord less tools and I sold my predator 3500, didn’t want more fumes in my van specifically in winter time. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much! You could use a 100 Ah lithium battery to power an inverter like this. You would have to charge the battery at the end of the day for the next day, but that would be clean and quite;)

Would like to know what the idle current draw just to keep the Unit Connected Inn, running without a load is For a battery system must be a minimum Definitely what’s the wave sign looks like under a half rated load or 3/4 rated load see what that sine wave looks like And what is your measured efficiency on the unit when it’s loaded down at least 50% and maybe three-quarter of it’s rated load when running remotely I’m battery cannot afford to have a inefficient inverter burning up the power as heat
