Good luck with the ol maverick, she'll be just fine, was hoping that I would get to take my 347 Pinto but as I was getting it dialed in to take it on its first drive I found a little water leak in a odd area where cars normally don't leak, turned out it was leaking water from a 1" crack above the oil filter in the outside of the block out of the front headbolt hole the threads are cracked from the bolt to the outside of the block leaking water on the oil filter so im going to have to pull the motor back out and take it to the machine shop to get fixed. Luckily it can be fixed instead of me paying for all of the machine work I had done to that block again so a 200 buck fix and I will be dropping it back in again and luckily I can bring him the short block instead of a bare block 😁 for once I get lucky, well sort of.

That motor sounds strong...I really liked watching how well you worked at making sure the engine was well lubed before the initial start and the break in of the engine. The only thing was If possible, I would have re-checked the torque on the head bolts after breaking in the cam. I really liked the idea of grease on the carb gasket. I was doing that 50 years ago I never liked installing paper gaskets bone dry grease worked for me. It was good seeing some else doing the same thing. One thing I also liked to do was use high tack on one side to fasten gaskets to the valve covers or other external parts and white grease or assembly lube, STP, Slick 50 on the other side. This worked to easily remove the part from the engine with the gasket still in perfect shape still on the part being removed. Now every thing is gobbed up with silicone some times these gob's show up floating around in the engine. Thanks for the great video's keep up the good work.

Two incredible things occurred to me just NOW. I was at a local store 10 minutes ago to get something for dinner, and I had a little chat with a stranger about how in the old times they used a string to adjust the tires, just like you did here. And this morning I just changed the tie rod adjusters on my car. So now I went home to have dinner, looking at a random YT video, I just choosed your channel as usually do, and I picked up this video because I haven't seen it. And here you are, using a string to set up your wheels straight, and changing your tie rod adjusters. This is amazing :) PS my car is a FIAT PANDA 900ie back from 2000 :D

Hope you get her in order before the trek. Always used cheat sticks for wheel alignments. A couple of yardstick and some rubber bands along with a pencil. Measure the rear rim against the front rim and subtract. Adjust the tie rod ends to suit. The Maverick should have an 1/8" of toe in with the rack set straight ahead. It takes some fanaegling to get it right, but no more than 45 minutes should get you close enough. Safe travels.

Being a ex race car mechanic formula enterprise cars we always ran toe out 1 mm front toe in 1mm rear. Most cars are set up that way for high speed handling. And your method is correct! We used fishing line and setup bars and a steel rule.
@ThunderHead2893 жыл бұрын
Ah ha!!!! I’m not wrong!
@aronhoward9193 жыл бұрын
@@ThunderHead289 no sir! You are quite correct! That set up is standard in most race cars. It helps high speed tracking to keep the car straight at high speed. If only you could bend your rear axle you would be mint😁. The extra toe sucks the car straight in front while the opposite in rear does the same by negative creating a more stable top speed.

I'm in agreement, original Bendix P/S valves aren't designed for long term manual usage, eventually ball stud will pop out, leaving you with no steering control. Steering stability increases with added caster. Back in day was common for settings of 0*, into negative numbers, while modern specs are +5* and greater. Problem is will make a manual steering system stiffer to turn(GM had different settings for P/S & manual), but reduces numbness in original "ram" P/S systems used on Fairlane, Torino, Mustang, Maverick, Cyclone etc.
@paulmbylbie60652 жыл бұрын
It's supposed to be toe in 1/8-1/4 but you live in Iowa it might be a little different there hehe🤣 ... On drag race cars we usually do zero to cuz it's less rolling resistance & check the rear cuz sometimes the dowel on the leaf spring may not always fit the centering hole on the diff . That's just my two cents but you know you guys know what you're doing keep doing your thing Bud keep on keeping on ▶️⏩💪👍🏁

Though personal experience and driving style does matter, it is generally taught that toe-in is better for high speed stability, but makes the steering less responsive. Where as toe-out makes a car feel more darty, and can cause some wandering at high speeds. Lots of toe out is usually used on cars set up for a road course, as it makes the steering more responsive. Both are obviously bad for tire wear. Most stock vehicles are setup for 0 toe or just a little bit of toe-in.

You're correct on the toe out. We've ran as much as 3/8" toe out on the circle track cars. It definitely stabilizes the car if the toe out is straight up or toed in the car gets very darty down the straightaways
@Turbochargedtwelve3 жыл бұрын
Theoretically it is not correct, but theory is always a starting point for testing. I’d be your experience is due to “dynamic toe” aka bump steer. Does your car squat the rear under acceleration down the straight? I’m sure it does and usually on dirt oval cars it does a lot! So what you need to understand is what happens to your steering when the front suspension goes into droop? Making things even more complicated is that you probably don’t run square spring rates or square tires or square shock damping i also be you’re running some serious Ackerman steering geometry. I’m not saying what you’re doing is wrong, because whatever makes the driver fastest is always right just that your conclusions shouldn’t be generalized.
@gibhamracing373 жыл бұрын
@@Turbochargedtwelve I've been doing this for 20 years on both dirt and asphalt and never saw a Racecar that didn't call for at least 1/8 toe out. Depending upon track size there are a lot of factors, bump steer, Ackerman, caster, camber, etc etc but never have a seen a circle track Racecar toed straight up or in. I'm not much on theory or how things should be. I just go with what works and the championships and wins over the years is enough to tell me it works regardless of what pen and paper say
@toecutterjenkins3 жыл бұрын
Check your caster if the car isn't tracking right. It's the forgotten alignment spec and important to the way the car drives and steers. Rwd cars tend to be toed in a tad because when the car accelerates the suspension will lift up a bit and the tire will toe out a bit.
