The problem I ran into trying to run .357 bullets in my 35 Rem chambered 336 Marlin was the fact that the barrel spec ahead of the chamber is without any free-bore and the leade is very short and steep (same-same 45/70 and 444 Marlin). To get any sort of bullet jump, the bullet was too deep into the case for my liking. This was done in an effort to come up with a solid bullet load for the cartridge, and 140 grain Barnes XPB bullets were being used. These were just empty cases being measured for contact and checked for cycling. Short as they were, they cycled and ejected well. Since I'm a big fan of all cartridges 358, here's hoping you get many viewers, with whom to share your experience. Oh, by the way. those .357 140 grain XPB's set well for bullet grip, jump, and cartridge cycling in empty 358 Win, and 350 R/mag cases. Good Luck

Thanks for the info on the 35 Rem. I was not aware the 336 had that issue with the pistol bullets. Like you, I am a big fan of the .358 bore diameter. First deer I shot 37 years ago, was with my Dad's 336 in 35 Rem. For the last 17 years, I have come home to my roots. My hope and desire is to shed a bit more light on not only the 358 Winchester, but also the effectiveness of other 35 caliber rifles. As for the 140XPB, that one was on my list to try. It made me happy to hear your report on that one. I will work with that one out of the 358, 35 Whelen Ackley, and the 350 RM. Thanks for stopping in.

180 grain I used in .358 Norma Mag when I had that one They shot same group as 200,225,250,270 ones So good practice and small game bullets they are A outdoor writer here that sadly is missed by many he had a custom Savage 99 in .358 and he used 158 grain and some pistol powders . He had low enough velocity for indoor pistol range in winter time , and fox and capercaillie / crow ammo also . Lot

How do you like your Norma? I have a 270Wby that I am wanting to put a 358 Norma bbl on. That will round out the top of the .35 cal collection. I would have to imagine there are others out there working with the 158's. I was wondering, without compressing Trailboss, if there is enough there to push a 158 class Cast out of it?? Oh time will tell I guess. Best

@@358Outdoors I am building a Norma aswell cuz I'm topped out in my Whelen. 158's in the 35W both Win SP and Hdy xtp fp shot like crap around 1.9-2k, Shilen 1:14. 200gn lead gcfp @2k give ragged 5 shot1" hole @75yd as well as 180 speer fp @2.5k one hole. Hi JS, I was originally looking to do a 35-375 Ruger (essentially the old 35 Newton) but decided to go with the Norma, at least until I change my mind again...lol. The Ruger 1V I had was in 223, wish I never would have sent that one down the road. Are you going to use a Shilen bbl for your Norma? I have no experience with them, however it appears they are well respected. As for the XTP's I have not shot them out of my Ackley Imp Whelen. I am currently working through the heavies on that one at the moment. All the best

I played with these bullets in my 358s..... Varmint load, that is.....

How did you like it? What rifle were you shooting them out of? They shoot well out of the Hawkeye, I have not tried them in the BLR as of yet. Cheers

@358Outdoors It's been years! At that time it was out of a Savage 99 (the newer 99s.... made in the late 70s or early 80s). They shot OK. But nothing to brag about. Average 2 to 2.5" groups at 100 yards. I lost interest, and never tried the loads in a BLR, Ruger 77, or any of the "customs" that I've had at one time. I generally use Hornady 200gr. PSP bullets in my current rifle. (a M77 Ruger stainless). Nice rifle! Too bad they don't seem to be making those now. I still feel their Hawkeyes are the best production rifles made. (when they make them!)

Cool I have the same loads to work up in my rifle. Still getting misfires or light primer strikes. Not sure. All factory ammo shoots ???

@@keenanhosking659 it is fun playing around with the different pistol bullets. Well honestly, this cartridge is fun with all weights. Are you getting the light primer strikes using a BLR? On occasion, I will also experience light primer strikes with the BLR I have. Cheers

@358Outdoors no I have a ruger 77 hawkeye frontier. I have been checking the shoulder on my brass and think I might be having the wrong headspace. Have you ever seen bird shot loads for the 358 ??

No, I have not seen the birdshot loads for the 358. I presume using the capsules used for the 38 special?? Sounds rather interesting.
