IF YOU'RE NOT RETURNING OR SELLING YOUR COMPUTER.... I'm guessing you want to keep using it with a new OS installed. Not to worry. Here are the steps to bring it back from the dead: *Force Shut Down:* Hold the Power button for 10 seconds until your Mac shuts down completely. *Boot into Recovery Mode:* Press the Power button again and immediately press and hold the Command (⌘) + R keys. Keep holding them until you see the Apple logo appear. *Release Keys:* Once you see the Apple logo or a loading bar, release the keys. You should now see the macOS Utilities screen, indicating successful entry into Recovery mode. From here, you have a few options depending on the cause of the boot issue: *Repair the Startup Disk:* Use Disk Utility to diagnose and potentially fix disk errors that might be preventing your Mac from booting normally. *Reinstall macOS:* If repairing the disk doesn't work, you can reinstall macOS, effectively giving your Mac a fresh OS installation. That should reinstall the OS and get you going again. Please let me know how it goes. By chance, did you subscribe to my channel? :) Have a great day!

@@LisaElias-k2h Hi Lisa, seems like you've got some challenges. Namely, understanding what this video is about and what it is meant to cover. Hi ISO, thank you for asking. The problem is that your drive has not been formatted. So, your computer does not see it and gives you the folder with the question mark. To fix this, when you boot into Internet recovery, go to disk utility and format your drive. Be sure to back up everything on your drive because this will completely erase all data. Hi Sean, I followed these steps on my MacBook Air (about 2014 era) and now I am getting an error when the laptop is loading after the restart. The loading screen starts and there is a little ghostbuster 🚷 sign instead of the Apple and it is stuck on this screen. Any advice?
@358studios9 ай бұрын
Hi @jamieowen5858, thank you for asking. I wish everyone on KZbin was as pleasant as you are. That was such a nice way to ask. I appreciate it. :) You are getting the no equal sign because your Mac is unable to find a valid startup disk. This happens sometimes because people accidentally delete a partition or wipe the whole disk and in doing so the computer can't find the operating system. That's exactly what we want from this video (so we can sell or return the Mac). However, when you are trying to continue using your Mac and you just want to clean it up a bit, that's not such a great thing. Here's how you reinstall the operating system. First, we need to boot your Mac into recovery mode. Turn your mac off (press and hold power button) or Restart... at restart press and hold Command and R. For older Macs this will boot your Mac into Recovery Mode. If that doesn't work, depending on the age of your Mac, you may need to press and hold Option, Command, and R. All at the same time. This can be a timing thing, so don't get frustrated. You will get it. For newer Macs with the M1, M2 or M3 chip, you just press and hold the power button until options comes up on the screen. Open Disk Utility (sometimes found in options or the onscreen menu). Here, you click on the main disk at the top left corner of the screen, and then click on First Aid. Click OK to look for any errors. OK, now that we know it's probably not an error with your disk, we are going to reinstall the OS. If you can, back out to the Recovery Menu and choose Reinstall OS. If not, shutdown and go through the initial steps again to access Recovery Mode. Then click on Reinstall OS. Follow the prompts and that should reinstall your OS. I hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes. By chance, did you subscribe to my channel? :) Have a great day!

If so, please see my pinned comments at the top of the comment box for how to reinstall the operating system. Hi there, I missed this comment. Sorry about that. Did you get it fixed? The blinking ? usually means one of two things. The computer can't find a formatted drive to install the OS on or you deleted the partition vs erasing the disk during this process. I hope that makes sense. Let me try to elaborate, if not. You can format your drive, using Internet, recovery and disk utility. You can look for partitions in Disk Utility, and if there are none, you can create one. Best thing to do is to boot up using Internet recovery and double check these things. Please let me know how it goes. Cheers

Does this mean all the data is erased and is ready to give away or sell? I restarted and from the Apple on top left I clicked on Startup Disk. I asked me to select the system I want to use to start up my computer. The only thing showing to choose from is OS x Base system Encrypted Disk. It asked for a password which I did and now no systems show to choose from on the startup Disk screen. As I mentioned previously, I had erased the MacIntosh HD so it doesn't show. I have no idea if all my information is wiped or not at this point.
@358studios9 ай бұрын
Hi @comfypjs, thank you for asking. I appreciate it. Yes, your information should be erased, although I can't guarantee it as I'm not sure what steps you followed from the other folks. The white screen with the no equal circle means that your system cannot find a startup disc or the operating system. Typically that happens because the disk has been erased or has an error. You could double check the data size by looking at the disk in recovery mode and disk utility. You sound like you may already be familiar with how to get to recovery mode but here's some help below. To boot your Mac into recovery mode. Here, you click on the main disk or the other disk (a partition below the main) and take a look at the size of the information it has stored on it. If you're see numbers that have a Kb or even numbers that have MB after them you probably don't have any significant data left on your drive. I'm going from memory so hopefully that helps. Don't mix up the total drive size with the amount of data stored. Look at the availability and that should give you ideal of how much disk space is being used. I hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes. By chance, did you subscribe to my channel? :) Have a great day!

Hey, thank you for the reply. The 1.29 and the 719 is very small and that leads me to believe that that's probably your system partition. If nothing else is showing up, your computer is not seeing a data disk.

Hey, sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I've been on vacation and of course the holidays. I've never seen what you're describing, even in my older computers. Is there any chance that you can start the computer in Internet recovery mode versus using the command prompt? The timing is a little tricky, but after pressing the power on button, if you press Option-Command-R: Starts up from macOS Recovery over the internet, OR Option-Shift-Command-R: Starts up from macOS Recovery over the internet and reinstalls the version of macOS that came with your Mac. Make sure your Internet connection is clean, meaning no firewalls, etc. Usually if you're doing this from home you won't have to worry about it. Work or public WiFi may give you trouble. Sorry, I can't be of more help. Please let me know how it goes. Cheers!

I wish you would make a newer version, though, as I am doing this a year later and a number of things have changed. I had already upgraded the laptop from Ventura to Sonoma to sell it. However, after erasing it, now I have to reactivate it and reinstall Ventura. I will then have to log back into Apple to upgrade it to Sonoma, again. I'm sure you don't need to do all that logging out if you're going to empty the drive afterwards? All that data will be erased anyway? 😮
@358studios4 ай бұрын
Hi @Cenobytez, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. You would think that is the case, but it is not. Unfortunately, Apple and almost every app you use leaves some latent traces behind. In addition, when you erase the drive, you're not really erasing all the data on the drive. Ever see those FBI movies where they recover data on a drive? :-) That's actually real stuff. And, don't even get me started on the amount of online data they collect. You can't do anything about erasing that data, because ironically it's not yours. Ever click "agree" on that really long End User Agreement when you first load a service or app? Yup, that's you agreeing to give away your data and to allow them to track what you do. So logging out is the best recommendation Apple provides, prior to handing over your computer to someone you don't know. I hope that helps. @@358studios Thanks for taking the time to reply. I had assumed main hard drive corruption and took my 2012 Pro tower to technician for diagnostics. He found that the hard drive and one of the raptor storage drives was failing. Replaced the 512 HD with new 1TB drive, but was unable to get macOS back to Catalina 10.15.7. Have to find proper patches, but this tech didn't want to use third party software, as I did when I upgraded from Mojave.

Hi there, quick question. Have you tried reinstalling the operating system through recovery mode? As long as your Apple ID is good recovery mode should give you the most recent OS system for your Mac. Please let me know and I can help you with getting recovery mode up and running on your computer.

When I try to boot disk utilitys it gives me a circle with a slash
@358studios Жыл бұрын
Hi there, can you give me more detail? Like when does this occur? Are you able to get to startup options? Is Disk Utility the only one with a circle and a line through it, and everything else shows (Recovery, Reinstall, Safari)? Normally, the circle with a line through it happens when there is an operating system found on the disk that is not compatible with that particular Mac. For example, if you tried to use an external drive with Big Sur to boot a new Mac. Try unplugging everything from your Mac and reboot. See if that helps get you into Disk Utility. Please let me know how it goes. Cheers.

Hi @georgelouis6515, thank you for asking. I appreciate it. Are you able to provide me with more details? You should be using command + option and R to boot into Internet recovery on an older Mac. The timing can be a little bit tricky, but keep trying. If you have a newer Mac, then you would simply hold down the power button until the options menu comes up. Hi, followed your instructions but ended up with the blinking question mark folder (2017 Macbook Pro - Montery). Disk Utility did erase the drive and I formatted it to the default APFS. What should I do now?
@358studios Жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, thank you for asking. There’s a couple things to look at. The blinking? Means that your computer doesn’t recognize the drive. It sounds like you formatted the drive, but maybe also deleted the partition. You may need to add the partition back. That seems to be happening to a lot of people. Also, double check that you have an SSD drive and not a spinning hard drive. APFS is good for SSD drives and Mac journaled is better for spinning hard drives. Please let me know how it goes. Happy to help. Cheers

I followed the instructions but when my Mac boots up again it has a blinking folder with a question mark. I try to install the OS onto the hard drive in internet recovery mode (mac OS Sierra). But once the download bar has fully completed a box appears saying. “An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.” Could somebody help please, I’m really struggling with this.

It’s a 2017 iMac (intel)
@358studios Жыл бұрын
Hi Wasp, no problem. Thank you for asking. I appreciate it. The reason you're getting the blinking question mark is that your computer doesn't recognize a formatted drive where it can install the OS. This is easily fixed by using the disk utility to format the drive before you ask it to reinstall the OS. Do you know if your drive is an SSD or HHD. The format you pick will matter (a little) depending. Use AFFS for the SSD and use Mac OS Extended Journaled for the HHD. Please let me know how it goes. Hey, did you by chance subscribe to my channel? Have a great day! Cheers.

My brother gave me his MacBook Pro and he does not know the password. How do I erase everything to the point it’s like I just bought it.
@358studios Жыл бұрын
Hi @RonderrickToston, thank you for asking. I appreciate it. Does your brother know what his Apple ID is and the password for his Apple ID? If he does, he should be able to reset the password on the computer. Beyond that you will probably have to take the computer down to the Apple Store and have them verify ownership before he can do much with it. Unfortunately, this method does not help you do anything along those lines. Please let me know how it goes. By chance, did you subscribe to my channel? :) Have a great day!

@358studios Жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon, I'd love to get paid with new Macs... but it just never works out. :) The ? means that your hard drive isn't formatted so the system can see it and install the OS. Use disk utility to format your drive (this erases everything so be sure you've backed up), and on the next go round it should start to install. Please let me know how it goes.

Hi there, this particular way of resetting a Mac is going to work mostly on new models. I am guessing that yours is not running the most current operating system, because I also have a 2012 Mac that will not do this. Make sure that you have an Internet connection, and that you are trying to reinstall the OS. I'm happy to help, but I need a few more details about where you're running into a stopping point. Cheers.

After this video u've to hold cmd + r then install the os.
@358studios10 ай бұрын
Hi @standswithpeace, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. You're correct. It seems some people want to wipe their system clean and continue to use it after. Not sell or return. No worries. As you suggested, here are the steps to bring it back from the dead: *Force Shut Down:* Hold the Power button for 10 seconds until your Mac shuts down completely.
