As the seasons change, so do our hair maintenance routines. Make sure your hair is well moisturized for the cooler seasons this month and be sure to make informed decisions on what you use. People say you shouldn't use Glycerin in the winter, but check out my experiment video below to see why I think it is safe to slap on the glycerin.

I was so scared to try glycerin for so long. But my hair was always dry. I mean crunchy even with using natural oils and water. So I'm like I can't get no dryer so I'll just try out vegetable glycerin. OMG my hair has never in my life been so moisturized and healthy. I have virtually no breakage now, which is helping my hair to retain length. My hair grows just slightly over an inch a month now with good hair practices. I love the video now to subscribe :)

This video is so helpful!! I had asked another KZbin guru about my hair and all she said was less glycerin. I didn't understand it because I am new to my natural hair (I know that sounds like a contradiction). Now I fully understand why my hair had more frizz to it with the products I used. Thanks so much for taking the time out to make this informative video!!

The water bonded to the glycerin is not static. Since its an aqueous environment the water and glycerin molecules move around. The reaction can be affected by environmental factors (eg. temp), harsh winter. As for pulling water from your hair. Maybe. You need some real Canadian winter for that test.
@umkishy99710 жыл бұрын
I agree. My first thought was "water can evaporate" so the water/glycerin balance is not definite. A dry climate will make the water in the glycerin mix evaporate quickly so that the glycerin will start attracting water from other sources (the dry air has none), like your hair. I noticed that my hair takes forever to dry in the summer if I am using glycerin and it seems that the water evaporates slowly. In winter, the glycerin causes my hair to dry quickly and any hair that is not exposed to air (hair in a bun) remains wet for days. I can still use glycerin in Northeast/Midwest winters if I use a humidifier in my house and wet my hair often.
@annmariebusu992410 жыл бұрын
interesting. I haven't made any observations on glycerin in my hair. I am staying away from it :).

I love this video!! I'm a professor and very much pro-critical thinking and this video definitely promotes critical thinking. Naturals need to do a better job of critically evaluating all the information thrown at us! Also, as a professor, I do research and that was a pretty good job at conducting an experiment :-) Thank you for taking the time to make the vid hun!
@AfrikanHairGod11 жыл бұрын
Yay that means a lot coming from you and yes I definitely agree. I must admit I have been guilty of spreading the misinformation without first researching. Now as a resource for other naturals I try to be careful about the information that I put out so that I don't misinform anyone or state opinions under the guise of facts.

And I agree, glycerin does puff up my hair, but it never dries it out. And for people talking about Atlanta verses the Northeast, glycerin is based on a dew point (optimal dew points for glycerin to be used would be between 40-60). Here in the A the dew points have been well below 40 (as a matter of fact, it's been cold and dry and dew points have been in the 20s), so supposedly you shouldn't use it because it would be drying. I beg to differ as I have never had my hair dry out, but it has become puffy from retaining the moisture. I am so glad you are doing these myth videos, too much misleading information out there!

ive only been properly moistening and defining my curls for the past month or so and ive found the best products for me are actually deep conditioners since a lot of them dont contain glycerin, i use them as a leave in conditioner/styling cream, so far glygeryn makes my hair frizzy by day 2, but conditioner alone doesnt have enough hold for me... might be time too try flax seed gel home made?

I tried using glycerin because I heard such good thing about it, made a mix of glycerin with fresh water followed instructions on how much to mix. The first day it was great, but by the fourth day my hair was dry and covered in flakes. At first I though The cause was by another product ORS hair cream or using that product with my spray mix. I washed my hair and only used the glycerin water mix. My hair was cloated and had white ball flakes all over my scalp, I sprayed it with water but a few hours later my fair dried out again. so I shampoo my hair again. I tested it for a week and came to the conclusion it must be the glycerin. Stopped using the glycerin mix and there was no flakes or dryness, I live in Europe so the weather is very cold and wet which I think is the main cause. My Conclusion is that products with glycerin in them which are lower on the ingredients list work fine but higher amount just seem to dry out my hair and cause buildup. My sister hair on the other hand loves it but she has issue with protein based products so it’s all about balancing what works for your hair. There no right or wrong in using an ingredient just finding the balance.

Yes! Great vid! I second that previous comment. Towels vs. t-shirts to dry your hair.
@AfrikanHairGod11 жыл бұрын
I have gotten that request quite a bit; however, I have not done it because I don't think that my hair will be a good reflection for that experiment. I believe those that use towels, are those with curlier, wash n go type of hair that use the t-shirt to cut down on frizz after their hair is cleansed. My hair is going to be frizzy no matter what I dry it with I just have frizzy hair. My hair becomes smoothed when I apply product to help smooth the cuticles and my hair to minimize frizz. So I won't do that experiment but I have seriously considered it

I loved this experiment. I dont know if you watched my videos last year when I was only using glycerine and oil for a while... I realised that after a wash it was all I needed for my hair but as im a product junkie I wasnt gonna settle for that. Basically sounds like glycerine with water makes a Hybid form of water and seal with oil will reduce the frizz.... wat u think?
@AfrikanHairGod11 жыл бұрын
I don't think the oil would do much to reduce the frizz. I think the hair becomes frizzy because it is retaining the moisture in the hair and causing the hair to swell as opposed to the water gradually evaporating out of the hair.
@KingChameleonsEye11 жыл бұрын
Maybe its all to do with the ph of the hair. What is the p.h of glycerine? I wanna understand the hydrogen and oxygen exchange between hair and water and why water temporarily breaks the hydrogen bonds in hair.
