So this week, I’m working on finishing up the door skins I got from www.truckshrouds.com and with the help of my friend Blake from Fly, Weld, Fab channel and his new air riveter, I finally tackle squashing the buck bolts on the outer edge and bottom of a Peterbilt door and let me tell you that these are not easy to squish without wrecking them. Took some doing, but I think I got the hand of it eventually and it only took me one more time to finally remember the sealant lol - enjoy!
If you appreciate these videos and like classic trucks, I encourage you to check out and join the American Truck Historical Society: www.aths.org/ and don’t forget to check out the upcoming annual truck show in York, PA
Also, be sure to check out my new KZbin channel Snowman Speed Shop / @snowmanspeedshop

Riveting 101: The rivet driver, or “set”, must be a perfect fit for the diameter and radius of crown of the rivet head. Blake’s kit of sets is for aviation AN rivets. Your commercial rivets have a shallower radius of crown, hence the digging in and “smiling” of the heads. You can modify a deep radius AN rivet set by grinding the outer rim down to shallow it up, then polish it back to glass smooth with wet dry paper and the set chucked in a drill. Also polish the working faces of your bucking bars- it’ll leave a way nicer finish. Use as low of air pressure as you can and still achieve rivet set in two-three short bursts of the rivet gun. Too low, and the rivet will work harden before full set is accomplished. Squareness of tools is key. The shop made head when done should be 1.5x diameter of the rivet tall, and 2x diameter of the rivet across. Choose rivets of appropriate length to start. They should protrude through ~ 2.5 x rivet diameter prior to bucking. Lastly- practice practice practice 😊

I've always put masking tape on the anvil in the air hammer. Less chance of damage to the rivet head. Wont prevent it totally, but it helps a lot. Both ways work, YMWV Best wishes from Northern Manitoba.

I worked as a aircraft sheet metal mechanic for 10 years for Kaman Aerospace here in Connecticut and wanted to give you some helpful advice on riveting. First you don't want to use steel or Monel rivets with aluminum panels and no aluminum rivets with steel panels because of corrosion with the two dissimilar metals. Second we used 3X rivet guns with air regulators on them for the majority of the jobs we did along with green duct tape on the rivet sets to prevent the smiley faces on the rivet heads. And third we had pneumatic hand held C squeezes or alligator squeezes for rivets that were accessible for areas like your door frames . Hope this helps.

Inspiring project! I've used "Olympic Rivets" on repairs to the skin on my old Airstream trailer. They're like a pop rivet but they use a hand power drill-mounted shaver that trims the rivet's stem off flush with a rounded profile that matches and blends into the rivet head.. Easier to see than to explain.....

I rebuilt a western trailer once upon a time and I had to build my own cone but for the air hammer, one thing i learned was if you wrap the end of the air hammer bit in tape. (I used electrical tape) It helps with marring up the buck head and surrounding metal.

Hi Mark, I commend you for learning new skills and working through your issues. I was impressed that you figured out how to handle the bucking bar and got away from the long bar and into a proper sized bar of the job. Having built 747's and 767's for over twenty years I have an observation, I saw one really quick shot of the rivet die, it looked like it didn't match the rivet head. There are specific dies for each style of rivet and when correct and you are on the head straight you will not get the smiley face even without tape. Love the channel and I look forward to the next installment.

Mark, you realize it only takes Peterbilt 8 hours from start to finish to completely build a truck right ? LOL Sorry 🙂... It's taking shape. I can't believe how much work you have put into the old girl since you got it. It's going to be really sweet when it's all done. I love the look of bare aluminum panels that don't have any remnants of paint or body filler on them. When I was building race cars, I only painted the aluminum work that needed to be painted. I like the little inserts that go into the holes on the blind rivets. It looks so much nicer.

I went to the ATHS show over the week end. There was a lot of nice stuff to see. A healthy person can easily walk the whole event. Thankfully it was not to hot and humid. Actually the golf cart thing is a little annoying. I know that some people can not get around well but people were pulling right up to trucks in their golf carts. Never got out to walk around a few trucks.

Watch that you don’t leave smiley face on the outside when you buck the rivet.😊 Some times they use masking tape to protect the sheet metal your riveting. Put it over the rivet. Bucking bar. Don’t cut the bad rivet out, center punch it and drill it out. Aviation rivets are aluminum, Are the ones you using steal.?

Mark, you’d be amazed at how well water manages to find its way into seams, especially when you’re driving and aerodynamics takes over..the rushing air will force the water droplets into that seam over time. You only have a handful of rivets in, take them out and do it right the first time, so you don’t have to do it twice.

When I went to aviation back in the day we did a lot of riveting, and my best advice is take a bit of masking tape and fold it over like double-sided and put one side on the river gun and want to hold the river and that does like a cushion to not mess up the head of the rivet

Mark can I make a suggestion? Have a live stream for questions and answers. Start off by telling your life story. Like what you do for a living now. What have you done previously for work. College ect. And introduce your family and have your wife set in on the question and answer part. I have always wondered where you got your driving experience. And what you do now. I was a 11th grade when smokey and the bandit came out my girl friend refused to go watch it again in the movie theater. I think I watch it 16 times in the movies. And I can't count how many times I watch it on TV. It was the biggest reason I became a truck driver. It did it for 20 + years until I got hurt and have had 5 back and 3 neck operations. So all I can do now is watch trucker related stuff and build 1/24 scale models.

As structural mech "NAVY" and A school instructor. you defiantly exceeded allowed hits, would have been set back week to relearn this skill, other than the rivet. always best if you can squeeze with the manual tool rather than using the air hammer you get much better result, preset the rivet squeeze on similar set up of thickens for the tool then go to town, pro tip have 2nd person hold the tool while the other squeeze's the rivet./ but air hammer works, another tip round the edge of the rivet set so there less of chance it contacts the surface when air hammering. they have rivet that have very small profile other than what holds the rivet head.

Anybody that brings you Coors, isn't a freind. Just sayin LOL... I like the idea of two channels. I've spent my life working on, and building cars. Street cars, race cars and show cars, and I've done most of the stuff that is car related on the YT numerous times so it's hard for me to get enthused about watching the car stuff. I was born and raised around trucks. My grandfather started teaching me how to drive his log truck when I was 9 years old, and I ended up driving truck for 40 years, but I never did the extensive rebuilding on them that you are doing, so it's a lot more interesting for me.

A twin sticks I've seen a few of your videos so I can see you got some perfectionist in yourself so please pull the skin back off the door frame and do the door right so you don't have anymore problems down the road because I don't think you want to go back re doing the same work over again that's to much work good job so far😊👌👍💯

They have a $3000 air riveter … anyone can use one of those. I’d like to see them do it old school 😂

They make an air tool that does a perfect job installing those rivets. Semi Casual used one on one of there episodes. It would make the job much easier. Probably could rent one.

Hey Mark not sure if youve delt with Dans Shop in Montevideo Minnesota but they sell a reinforcement bar that goes inside door under window sill. It helps with vibrating mirrors. 379 have them. I put them on my 359 helped alot.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice, right? Oh, the other saying I like is "we are always in a hurry to get things done, but never in such a hurry that we don't get things done right the second time".
