Repair DOG BONE for MINING Truck using Zayer Bed Mill! | Machining & Bore Welding

We’re fixing a critical component for a big mining truck and we’ve got a different approach that might raise some eyebrows! We’ve got a dog bone linkage off a Caterpillar 785 haul truck; the bores are a little worse for wear and need to be reclaimed. We'll be setting the part up on our Zayer bed mill and using our shop made adapter with a Wohlhaupter boring head to machine out the worn bores. Then, to save some serious time, we're keeping the part right where it is and using our Zayer mill's head to setup the line boring mounts ready for welding. Now, here's where things might get interesting. We're using our Sir Meccanica WS2 portable bore welder to weld those bores vertically while they're still on the mill. Some folks might have a different approach, but we're all about efficiency! Once the welding is done, it's back to machining the bores to exact specifications and cutting in the snap ring grooves. We'll then drill in the grease ports, pop those snap rings in, and use our 150-tonne hydraulic press to press in the spherical bearings. Hit that subscribe button and join use to see our unique approach to bringing this part back to life!
In this video we are using:
- Zayer 3500BF Bed mill
- Sir Meccanica WS2 portable bore welder
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder
- Metalmaster HPM-150T Hydraulic press

The welding setup is definitely an interesting feature of the job! Like you said, you're your own boss, and it's your time, your tools, and your responsibility to the customer. You're accountable to yourself, and if you're satisfied then unless anyone has wisdom that can help you, you can do it however you see fit. I think it's pretty ingenious, and saves so much on setup time, that must have a massive advantage.

What impresses me most and hits me in the heart the most is the partnership between Kurtis & Karen. I have been self employed with my partner Christine for over 30 years and the success we achieved was due to the efforts and complementary skills both of us had. In January she passed away after a 3 year battle with cancer 😢 Now it's just myself and 2 dogs. All the property, machinery, tools etc I have or could desire could never make up for the loss of the one you loved and worked with for such a large part of your life. Treasure every moment you have together Kurtis & Karen, (along with Homeless), they'll be the best times of your life. Running your own business on your own is no fun. No one to do the admin, correct your mistakes, be there when you fall or hurt yourself doing something risky, get in the way with a camera and giggle at everything 😀 Take care and keep up the good work on your channel. Don't mind me if I shed the occasional tear.

When I was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2012, I was a one man band doing radio station maintenance for 12 stations across sw Ontario. After surgery, I couldn't safely drive for about six weeks. My wife of 50 years married at that time, drove me all over the place and while I did the work, she sat in the truck, or station if there was space, and did her knitting. She passed, suddenly, at the beginning of Covid, maybe one of the first cases, we dont know for sure. 55 and a half years we'd been together.

You asked for my thoughts... and it's just that. As a Machinist all of my career and now retired, You do very well as a jack of all trades it seems like. I see that maybe the distance between the bores doesn't matter much? As you did one bore at a time. FYI, if it was a critical part, you could line up the bores on the part to a slot in the table with pins so it will be parallel with the "X" dimension on the table. Then center the 1st bore and use the dimension given to be sure the 2nd bore was correct. Remember, these are my thoughts, don't shoot me :) Love watching you work, and the birds, dog, and your wife's edits at the end is great ! LOL

if you are talking about the trucks they are actually very easy to drive... just drive the bit you can see and the rest follows... fully automatic and no trailers or bendy bits to worry about.

Letting the job sit on the Zayer bed during line welding is genious. You are evidently capable of taking care of both your machines and your personal safety. My inner nerd (actually, my science Candidates Degree....) smiles, when you talk about the different parameters, that play a role in your choice of settings for the line welder. You being aware of those parameters and taking them into consideration during setup, is a clear indication of your high skill level 👍👍👍👍. Interesting and inspiring as always. Keep up the good work, stay safe 👍

The Zayer mill really performed well , l think you provided all the best protection possible while welding there are always critics, I used to tell the critics ,”Doers get things done watchers are paralyzed by worry and therefore become critics”! These are industrial machines, yes you look after them but you use them up over time, and therefore the ultimately are consumables. I did significant engineering on 5 continents in my career and was successful because regardless of the circumstance , it got done safely on time and to industry standards. You are doing it right I think!

Your guys' video style is something I aspire to for my own channel, but I am still soo far away from having the confidence and the skills, at least your bloopers at then show that it is not always as natural and smooth as it seems in the final edit.

"Cats and skinning" stuff. Great approach and true Craftsmanship. Thanks for showing the entire process (thought and execution). You saved your Customer tons of money by taking this approach ... multiple set ups costs money and unnecessary as the bushing is "swivel" so lots of tolerance in the end. You two may not fully understand the knock on effects of your videos for future Generations but it is surely embedded. 40 years in Aerospace (where the overall tolerance stack up of the OML of the Aircraft is +0.000/-0.009") and current Gen's appear to be "Ah, just toss it in the machine and push some buttons" to achieve good results ... yeah, I watch each step carefully Kurtis and you're spot on every time.

Hello CEE team, weekly greetings from Belgium. Another job well done, without any drama's...(nice way to start the weekend). Smart move to keep those rails as riser blocks and having an shop build alignment tool 😁. Actually, my grandfather & me, kept as well our workpieces on the machine bed as well, start welding. It saves lot of setup & machining time and possible reducing the end bill of the customer. Enjoy your weekend, have a few 🍻🍻.
