The beams and rafters are being planed and cleaned up for painting. This August is full of thunder storms, and I'm capturing some wild life on the trail cams.

I am a retired house painter. Many of the homes I painted were very large new construction projects. From the beginning, I did not pay a lot of attention to how dirty other tradesmen worked. Then I realized how much time I spent cleanup after them... It became a real problem. If you have pride in your workmanship, then you will keep your workspace exceptional, as I see you are doing. Bravo. I really enjoy watching this process. As many others have often said, you are a joy to watch. I wish it was possible for me to help with some of the work. At times, working as you do, is often not work at all.

I totally agree. I ask once if they would please clean up their mess and they may or may not ignore me but I get firmer and explain to them or one workman...the amount of time it robs me of getting home to enjoy MY kids and also it cost me money because time is money correct. If I still have issues then well I haven't had to face thatissue and I hope I don't.

Yes this cabin being rebuilt was built by good workers when it was built or it would not be standing after all these years. James you are proud of your work even cleaning up after others! Doesn’t this fact bring you joy that your work you did right makes you feel good? Martin will have this same joy when he sees this cabin done and he did his best!

Totally agree!! The way a craftsman works (messy or neat) is a huge indicator of the type of work they are going to produce !! The "mindset" that wants the finished product to be "elegant", correct, neat, and finely finished, doesn't stop with the rafter, beam, or other piece they are working on !! It IS, after all, a mindset and is very pervasive. Martijn describes it very well. It "DOES" have a way of "tweaking" your brain until it gets done !! And then, it's so satisfying !!

Once you are ready to place the stone slabs back on the roof you should do one thing. Leave a message on the top side of a beam for a future craftsman to discover it a 150 or more years from now. They will be thrilled to find it and to know who crafted this great ceiling structure. Awesome.

Martijn’s filmmaking is constantly evolving and taking on a life of its own, better than a motion picture which you would pay to see. It’s better because it’s transcendent, as close to the actual experience itself as one can imagine. I really like the “sweep your mind” metaphor represented in sweeping up the floor, to find needed closure, reward, and freedom, in completing unfinished tasks or removing clutter.

@@CynthiaVicario Yes, he’s very pragmatic, and has a content and unassuming mannerism to compliment his work, walks, and words. Being a turning point and satisfying moment in home construction, when the roof finally goes up, he’s like most, clearing up loose ends before moving on to the next project, as was the case with the stone table setting. That freed him to focus his attention and energy in direction of the roof, making the work more enjoyable also.

When you were spiking the rafters I was thinking to myself, maybe a bigger hammer and then there you we’re with a bigger hammer. Years ago a friend and his wife were having a new home built and every weekend when the carpenters were gone they would go together and clean up the building site and inside the framing. He said it improved the the workers morale and efficiency plus it got rid of the residual dust and dirt that would eventually leach out of the building’s interior as time went on. I do the same in my hobby workshop and I’m always amazed at how fast the clean-up goes and how much better I feel afterwards. Thanks for another great video and the very appropriate ethereal music for that little piece of heaven.

Indeed. Those nails need a hefty hammer. I remember working with my dad on our cabin and trying to push those bastards through the rafters with a normal hammer, boy was it quite a challenge.

I find that there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing the fruits of my labor, whatever those may be, whether pertaining to never-ending household chores or something more project-oriented, or even something as simple as re-hanging a large mirror because I misjudged the first time around (and that was over a year ago). Totally agree with cleaning up as you’re working. I love cooking and baking, but I can’t do neither in a messy way, I must clean as I go about both. Your updates, Martijn, are a treat I look forward to every weekend. Thank you for sharing yourself with the world.

He lived in our home throughout his studies and made quite a respectable and prosperous name for himself. It is great to see you talk more in this week's episode about further plans, the nature around you and different observations out of your thoughts. In contrast to the previous episode, where the atmosphere was dominated by silence and heavy work, I interpret reaching this point in renovating the roof as a great burden slowly going off your shoulders, from one episode to another. I have a *tiny* workshop which can rapidly become a mess of shavings, discarded tools and miscellaneous detritus. The temptation to carry on through the carnage is strong but Martijn's message is so true. A tidy workspace is a calming workspace. The way we all learn is through others the generation before teaches the next. Now we have them documenting it for those that want to learn but it wasn't handed down from parents or other family members. Now we have DIY VIDEOS to help also preserve knowledge. What you and others are doing restoring or preserving these beautiful places that were built hundreds of years ago is becoming a serious priority.

I love the color of your beams, my living room furniture is that color, it's so soft and pretty. Wow when they say chestnut is a hard wood, they really mean it!! (watching you nail). My son uses trail cams also, amazing what you can capture! We used to live on a farm and we did see a black bear or two. It's exciting. I live in Pennsylvania, USA and I've been to Germany, France, and I loved all of it. So different from here. I love the old feeling there! You built to last. You could stand an elephants weight on that roof. LOL My grandfather came to the states as a young man in the late forties. His name was Kyler. He was from the Netherlands. This is my mother’s side. He could build anything. He passed at 91. I have some of his tools. I remember long ago in my teens ( 55 now) that he gave me a project in one room of a cabin as he was doing other things. It was late and I was tired and I said, Opa do you want me to clean the room in the morning or now? I am tired. Not lazy…tired. We started at 7 am and it was 9:30 and I was young. He said, until we clean the floors and put up the tools, we’re not finished. Opa said the same, get rid of the clutter so your mind is clutter free as well.

I am a sewer and I often hear my sewing friends joke about their untidiness and remark that there is no time to clean as they are to busy sewing. I could not understand how they could sew when every where is a mess. When my sewing table is untidy I can't think straight so therefore I don't sew straight or do a proper job. It was refreshing to hear you speak of tidiness, and how much better you feel after a clean sweep.

I literally sat up and pointed to the screen when you spoke of keeping things tidy and cleaning up messes! You said it was a message for yourself but I completely agree and concur. But this was a lesson that took me a long time to really appreciate, it truly is worth the extra effort to stay on top of clutter and clean up each day. My favorite comment you made was "It is to clear the clutter in my mind"! Yes! Love the music, the vibe and beauty of the landscape and, although it slowed you a bit, the thunderstorms were wonderful to experience. Living in a dry California, I envy the summer rain. My son bought a house that needed renovating, and every time I went up to do some work for him I'd spend at least an hour tidying up the mess he'd left before I could start! It drove me up the wall - so well done on keeping on top of it Martijn. Great progress once again

Martijn, Another excellent video. I watch a series of Martijn's video's through the eyes and comments of a videographer and he was amazed at Martijn's work, which seems to be part natural and part genius. He seems to have the ability to capture the very essence of his surroundings in a natural way that I'd have to say this gentle spirit is in tune with his enviorment..every inch of his land and the mountains that we all have the pleasure of looking across from his land and view, almost touch. I was surprised when he said the mountains were much closer then , they appeared. I would have never guess that they were. In my minds eye they were as majestic as the mountains of Alaska that seemed some mornings so close that it might be an easy hike but in truth were hundreds of miles away. Mt McKinley would bid me good morning over many years, often I'd watch the mountains when an entire group of climbers could not be located, or a small plane was missing. I'd wonder if the mountain might show mercy and give them back to life, in most cases that ended up as a one way journey for the entire group. I lost a friend in those mountains in his small plane along with four other men all executives of a hardware supply chain who were flying out to the bush to evaluate if a store could be justified being built verses the cost of bringing supplies in for a fairly isolated area with no roads, accessed only by plane or by snow mobile, or dog team. He nor the plane or passengers were ever found but Bob would be content I am sure that he was now part of the mountain he found so beautiful. With Martijn its a gift, a natural ability to see what pleases his eye when editing and is incredibly beautiful that he'd rather like that he was now a part of these grand mountain. I read one professional videographer was just as awe struck at Martijn's natural ability to capture such beautiful shots and of great value whose statement was that the professional was literally awe struck at Martijn's natural abiility..and I too.was often awe struck by what some would think a simple shot from his drone, like his vehicle pulling a load of lumber in his small trailer yet often those shots are not good and end up on the cutting room floor as wasted film. Not Martijn's. ls call Martijn a genius at his work, I don't question their opinions. Often times as I watch so many of his video's and his documentary of Two Years on a Bike, I'm literally transported right along with Martijn. I would have never guessed this quiet soul would have even a scintilla of humor in his body, he seems most of the time serious minded as many might think, yet several times his sense of humor unceremoniously pops out much to my delight and I laughed out loud ..in a serious wind and rainstorm in the middle of God knows where ...some foreign country where there is no comfort for man nor beast. Martijn fights to set up camp (I believe he passed on trying to cook food, because it would have flown miles from him had he even attempted in those incredible winds) and he putting up his tent, and once inside and bundled up in his sleeping bag...out of the blue Martijn yells "I DON'T LIKE THIS" and I laughed so hard and he said it once again with sort of a rye sense of humor as in "WHO WOULD". It all makes such perfect sense now that Martijn wants to restore the buildings to their past glory (hard to picture that, however Martijn relishes that he is going to be breathing life back into those abandoned buildings). We can all see the changes begin as he continues to dedicate himself to his goal of restoration. He pictured something in his minds eye, the glory of was once was...and he is breathing life back into those small buildings. The gentle touch he is bringing to combining the rustic history and adding the beautiful that a true craftsman knows...he is beginning to make sense to me. Martijn is very self sufficient, he says he likes being alone. I believe him. He is content with in his own creative mind . When I say he is begining to make sense to me that is MY fault. I kept thinking, typically that if the man had a mate how much happier would he be. A woman to see him through the tough times where he may doubt himself, a woman to bake the bread and fix the meals after he has worked hard into the night and the temperatures of fall are upon him. That is NOT Martijn Doolard. If ever I had hoped to meet a soul who was truly self-sufficient and very content is Martijn. He means it when he says he likes being alone. There is this quiet strength and creative part of this man that taught me one thing ... it is a rare human being that knows and understands themselves as well as Martijn Doolard does. He looks at life (I am assuming and your correct to nail me on that word assumption) that Martijn feels life a bit different than most others do. He is focused on HIS life, HIS goals and being a good human being and living in harmony with life and nature. I personally can't wait to see this first house finished. I've had peeks as we all have at how much progress he's made to date and you can feel the gentle spirit and love this man is putting into his HOME. He is creating a place of peace, of harmony and surrounded by his true love of nature. Martijn is becoming a part of this environment in a gentle way, with respect to nature. I know I can feel the harmony that Martijn has with his land and his little home he is with loving care bring back to life. How fortunate we are to be able to become friends with this beautiful soul of this man. Of course I can assume that because your here, and your understanding Martijn and admire him as a human being tells me you're also a kindred spirit. Wouldn't it be wonderful to spend just one afternoon listening to Martijn tell us of his feeling of being a part of the land he now prepares to live life on and call home and I will bet forever. To pitch in and carry lumber or stones or go on a hike and listen to Martijn tell us of the wolves he hears at night or the cows and their wonderful bells as the herd moves from one pasture to another. Right down to the wooden drains he is going to chisel out by hand, that he once viewed on a house in his travels, he loves to get his hands on his projects, his mark and his craftmanship. Am I the only one that realized as Martijn stood next to his father working in one scene how much the son mirrored the father? Martijn has been brought up very well to understand the values of life and good work ethics. To see his mother sewing outside in the beautiful sunshine and breathing in the pure fresh mountain air... what a lovely mother to have sat with the mountains in full view in front of her and mend some of Martijn's things. Amazing family. I apologize I never mean to write a book when I type, but how does one put in short sentences how much they admire Martijn Doolard, a simple man of the earth and totally in love with nature and his environment. I simply can't.

Your statements regarding cleaning and completing projects/tasks are so "relatable"!!! Only a craftsman or other person who spends the majority of their life devoted to fashioning, fabricating, and/or creating things can experience and understand that feeling. Hearing that sentiment from another person really "puts us on the same page" !!! I had a young nephew, who I have mentored quite a bit about a variety of construction crafts, recently express his level of satisfaction following a day of laboring on a construction or other creative project. Was so gratifying and meaningful hearing that sentiment coming from another individual!!! Especially, a younger one !! That feeling you describe is even "shared", with respect and admiration, by those of us "like minded" individuals who watch your efforts!!! Congrat's and enjoy !!!
