It is interesting how much bass you lose on both the Panasonic G7 and the Canon 5DMkII compared to the MacBook Pro. I wonder why. The Panasonic G7 generally has a decent preamp. Usually the RODE VideoMic Pro is fine set at +20dB gain on the Canon 5DMkII. This reduces noise significantly since Canon is well known to have poor preamps in their cameras. But it looks like the Shure VP83 has simply much more gain than advertised when set to +20dB. I'd like to see a comparison between the Shure VP83 and theRODE VideoMic pro. Thanks.

Did you need any special connection to make the VP83 work with the Lumix G7? Can't get sound when I use this shotgun mic but G7 sound is fine without it. Thanks.

You should just need to plug it in and make sure it's turned on with a good battery. I own two G7's and the only way I've ever had even remotely useable audio from the onboard mics was by using double sided tape to attach a Rycote wind jammer over the two mics. Even then, it's okay for b-roll and ambient background, but not so much for dialogue.

Hmmm... Maybe something wrong with the VP83. Plug it into the mic jack 1/2 way and the G7 recognizes it but still won't capture sound. Plug in all the way and doesn't recognize it or capture sound. Thank you for your reply!

The sound on Macbook pro is incredible. On the cameras, lack bass, but this shure mics is known to not having a warm sound. I do not use the low pass filter, because it cuts even more bass.

if you move/shake the VP83 do you hear a rattle? I just got a new one from amazon and when I shake it a little it rattles.

KayosWONER It’s probably the battery door clips, try holding those while you shake it and see if it stops.

I thought it might be that as well and did try that but the rattle seems to be coming from the back of the mic where the switches are. thanks for the fast reply!

My gosh, Shure's mic has a really poor performance on top of the cameras, opposite to the MacBook where the mic sounds quite nice, I think even it is a good choice for voiceovers.

It is pretty amazing how bad a good mic can sound plugged into most cameras, always worth recording separate audio off camera if you can.
