Hi, lovely video, spent weeks living there in the late 70s early 80s, Helped out at the observatory and as a local to Port St Mary spent most of my spare time in my own boat fishing along the coast that you travelled on. Miss the place so so much, thank you.

What a splendid film. I've been to the Calf three times. The first time I was almost the only person on the boat and the solitude was awesome. I will get back there one day and, maybe, finally realise my ambition to stay over. Is that Jane's House at the nine minute mark? I have a photo (a selfie before the days of selfies) of me inside Jane's House some time, I think, in the nineties when I lived n Ramsey for a while. I love the Calf. One of my favourite special places

Excellent video Tanya and the Isle of Man and Calf of Man certainly has good scenery to compete with some of the beautiful scenery in Scotland and I have walked up various mountains in Scotland when I was younger and would love to do it again.

The Island is like a miniature version of Great Britain when it comes to landscapes. Parts like Scotland, and parts like England and Wales. Just squished into a tiny little speck in the Irish Sea :)

I haven't been to the Calf for many, many years. When I went puffins still nested there and the cliff side was full of them. What I do remember were the flippin' midgies!
@Lovelygreens3 жыл бұрын
There were few while we were there but it had been very dry up until the day we arrived. Maybe that had something to do with it?

@@Lovelygreens Probably. I seem to remember the weather was a bit overcast and damp the day I went. I really must go for another trip. Since I last went I got really interested in bird watching so I'd probably appreciate it more now.

I'm curious about the houses. Who lived there and how long ago did they leave? I'm asking because my family name is Calf, which we've been told is because our ancestors came from the Calf. But thanks for the virtual walk about, it's great to know what it looks like there.
@Lovelygreens5 ай бұрын
Calf is an old word that means little island. I'm not sure about your last name, but I don't think it's Manx - or, at least, not a common Manx name. I've never heard it here before. Maybe it was taken on after your family emigrated? If you want to trace your ancestry, there's a wonderful genealogy museum in the Isle of Man called the iMuseum. As for the tholtans on the Calf, they were vacated decades ago. There were a few farming families that lived there, but others were there to man the lighthouses.
