You're right about Casio watches: cheap and great. And the old-school digital models like the F91W scratch a nostalgia itch and cost a whopping $13, so you can get a quality watch and save the rest of the money for a new bass like a sensible person instead of blowing it all on a high-end watch :)

Love this yearly ep! I have so many of the things on this list. The Walrus Canvas tuner is the envy of all my friends--not just because it's snazzy, but because it's SO FAST. I just run it in bypass since I'm still working on EVERYTHING and I can always look down and make sure I'm playing the note I think I'm playing. Thanks, as always, y'all!

I’m a watch dude and everyone has g shocks. You can have a 20 grand Rolex gmt but you will also have a $15 f91w, $60 dw5600 or a $100 casioak. There is definitely overlap between watch enthusiasts and musicians.
@mysteryshrimp3 сағат бұрын
Specifically the G shock line is made to be rugged. If you're on the road, you will want to have a watch that can get knocked around, get spilled on, not get scratched, etc. love those g-shocks, and I used to sell everything from Casio to Tag.

Absolutely correct on the Dunlop Gator Grip picks. I use 2.0mm, and they give a beautiful tone somewhere between finger style and a more stereotypical pick tone. Highly recommended.

@@SO-ym3zs that’s something someone told me as well it was nice to have someone come up and notice! If you really dig you get great pick tone and light playing feels still nice and firm while still sounding delicate!
@SO-ym3zs3 сағат бұрын
@@jamesrafferty6545 I love their tone and versatility and durability. That said, the fact they don't flex at all can be tiring on the wrist when you're songs with a lot of fast, lengthy 8th note passages.

Watches in general are boring but Casio watches are epic, and that’s my estrogen riddled opinion. I’m also a bit curious about that Soundbrenner tactile metronome watch. Hey, you really should have a series on gear testing. I want to hear your thoughts on basically all the Soundbrenner stuff and also that weird tactile backpack bass monitor.

1:02:12 My personal preference is to put a clip on tuner in every gigbag for each my guitars and basses I use regularly. And besides a cable, strings and a strap I also put in a small foldable stand, so no matter which one I grab, I always have everything I need that evening already in my bag. Of course I also bring a bag with other necessities and an combo/amp/cab plus a pedalboard if necessary. But if there is already an amp on stage I can just grab my bass and I‘m good to go. So a clip on tuner by tc electronics, Peterson or Korg are small, reliable and not that expensive as a pedalboard tuner where you also have to bring your pedalboard to the gig every single time. That‘s why they are a nice affordable Christmas gift.

The Nordy mute seemed to effect intonation a lot. The best thing I’ve found so far is putting foam under the strings and above the strings attached to the chrome bridge cover. If you sandwich it, it will not work ruin the intonation.

If they don't have a short scale bass, get one. $100-$200 will get a squier or Harley Benton. It's impossible to tell a bass player how good a short scale is without forcing them to play one for a couple of weeks.

Sharon is 100% wrong, nothing that sounds like "tick" means bag in French haha (I'm French). The general word for bag is "sac".
@southpawjinx13 сағат бұрын
But ticking fabric is french and used to make bags.
@_Olorin3 сағат бұрын
@@southpawjinx1 I found no French origin to ticking fabric and it's not derived from a French word (also, it seems it's used much more for furniture, mattresses and pillows than bags). Ian's explanation for why it's called "tick" makes much more sense. On a side note, "Denim" is both a french fabric and the name is also derived from French, "de Nîmes" meaning "from Nîmes", a French city in the south.
