It still pleases me that the route to Birch Coppice was reinstated. I remember walking the track bed soon after it was all originally lifted following the closure of Baddesley Colliery and the whole branch became just a stub at the back of Kingsbury oil terminal. There was the remains of a footbridge at the junction to Birch Coppice, I wonder if much of it is still there, languishing in the tree growth. Back then it was still very open, there wasn't much vegetation along the route and the bridges were still visible and accessible to cross. Nowdays even the viaduct over Sugar Brook is hard to see until you're pretty much beneath it!

I reckon these things have earned their keep many times over by now. It'd be interesting to know just how many miles the surviving ones have racked up over the decades.

QUESTION: You guys know more about Deltics than I ever will. I find them fascinating but one thing that confuses me is why some of them, when moving off, have intermittents bursts of power while others can move off smoothly. Why is that?
@74HC1388 ай бұрын
It's a 37 not a Deltic. These are old locos with electromechanical controls, and the engine power when moving off is probably exceeding the desired amount, but the control system is slow to react so only starts closing the fuel racks after the engine power has overshot the desired amount, and because it overshot it'll keep trying to reduce power until it eventually goes the other way and undershoots the desired power level, and it will keep oscillating like that until the overshoots/undershoots decay enough. Classic underdamped feedback loop behaviour. (Our old International Harvester diesel tractor does the same thing).

As a kid, I'd dream of bears and class 37s and tremble to my toes 'Til old Tige, would come up to my bed and nudge me with his nose And then my fears would melt away and Tige, would go lie down I'd drift on back to sleep, without another soundㅤ

Its not a deltic as a deltic sounds nothing like a class 37 plus deltics are bigger and have got 2 engines.
