Thanks for doing this Scott. I’m particularly happy as it verifies my ‘theory’ or rather practical experience with true coatings and using the mild acid washes to revive them. It doesn’t work so well with spray products as they don’t have the true ceramic base that is still on the paint but is clogged rather than just eroded away, which is likely what has happened to the KB product. It’s interesting that all the products with a higher solids content reacted well and the products with little or no solids content didn’t, apart from Fusso. The Ptfe base in that is meant to behave like a coating and it is very impressive. Just need more people to implement this in coating maintenance now so that they prematurely call coatings dead when they can be revived with simple washes. This way, these coatings will actually have more of a chance of reaching their durability claims as they will all get clogged by year 3.
@ScottHD

Agreed (and you're welcome). It definitely seems to kill the sprays and help the actual coatings from what this has shown.

@@arapaimagold8088 yes and that's why these shampoos have been developed. I've been using Labocosmetica Purifica, which is the O.G of this type of shampoo since 2019 and it has been fantastic for me and several others I know. As with most things in detailing, it helps to employ some intuition and common sense and in this case it means using the right dilutions and only use when needed, not every wash.

+1 to the “clogging” hypothesis. The top performers of this test appeared to be come back the most from this method of decontamination washing. So there’s truth to the degradation hypothesis as well and also some degree of protection still being there after hydrophobics decrease... depending on the product. Hope to see the same type of testing with the multi layer panel. Clogging should effect multiple layers the same as 1 layer but perhaps more layers prevent degradation and especially from acidic decon chemicals. Great testing and respect for continually growing through feedback and user requests: the best keeps getting better!

@@ScottHD yup, I also have the new version but didn’t even crack it open yet. I’ve just waxed my car with fusso like 3 weeks ago. The more you use it the smarter you get. I wax 2/3 panels depending on the size extreamly thin to the point I can barely see where the wax is on, with a damp aplicator and go straight to buffing from where I started. Done it after a full decon in the evening on a cooled paint inside a garage. It went easy on/easy off. But fist couple times were harsh 😄

@ScottHD
@ScottHD 2 жыл бұрын
We generally don't have a big water spotting issue from the weather there - if anything, it's minor. Fallout or iron? Not really. It would say VERY minimal, if any. Generally that is from embedded brake dust on the sides of vehicles after driving in the rain (as an example). If anything, maybe diesel soot and dust, pollen, etc. (I have a working farm and the neighboring tracts are all farmland/cattle grazing).
@roscopervis
@roscopervis 2 жыл бұрын
Whilst there may be a small effect from the water, these soaps are also very effective on pollen and other light airbourne contaminants. Even if you’re in a soft water area, there will still be some minerals in it, so whilst it may not clog up quickly, it will eventually. Plus, when you have ‘The Pollening’ as we have seen that can kill or seem to kill many products, but sometimes, it’s the clogging issue again, where pH neutral products just don’t have the bite to fully clean off all the evidence of the pollen.

The things to remember are that some products work better in different environments, some are more widely available places than others, and some are easier to apply than others. I did just got off a live stream where a chemist said that reduced graphene oxide based ceramic coatings will be the best option for the next few years - then the next generation of products will be released which aren't sio2/ceramic based. So, its just starting to get interesting.
@ScottHD

Correct - I agree.. that's why I'm here to cut through the BS! Definitely look at these as a "worst case scenario" longevity (your mileage may vary) but the results are fairly consistent when testing more than once, and also seeing what others are getting (in the comment section)

@@scottmattern482 Good point. I think the other X-factor…is us. We are getting nothing but older and wiser (or more foolish). Things like time and energy (and weather) affect our patience and tolerance for a product’s quirks. I’m at a point where my next car won’t be picked for factors beyond fit and finish. Hell of a lot easier to care for a car when it has enough quality clearcoat to make it worth caring-for. Lastly, watch an old video of Pan. Then watch even a preview now and try to keep your food down. Ruined 911 turbos for me for life.

It may sound silly but I urge to see a test that has been on my mind, I want to see how long a panel will bead up if you use a Ceramic spray detailer and then apply spray coatings on top of the detailer to see if there plays any longevity affect on the spray coating. I noticed that Meguires had released a 'pre' hybrid ceramic so I was wondering from a detailer pov if detailer would work like a 'pre' coating before application but I haven't had an accurate source to explain. I have tried CG hydrospeed before applying a spray coating on wheels before to provide a slicker surface to apply on since it was a very Hot and humid day. Just some thoughts on my mind, thanks Scott for all your hard work 👌

You could try it yourself and film it. Personally, I think in most cases, this wouldn’t work well as you’re affecting the surface the more durable product has to bond with. I guess you’re thinking is hoping to be similar to primer polishes with coatings or how Feynlab use Prime clay lube to pre treat the paint surface to aid coating bonding. This would rely on the same or symbiotic chemistry being used to ensure the more durable product can still bond effectively.

For me, after watching these for a couple years, I'm left thinking that Ceramic/Graphene coatings are not worth the hassle and cost of application. Totally agree -- 8 months to 1 year with something like Griot's 3 in 1 *without* any re-application/maintenance... Do a little bit of simple 3 in 1 spray and rinse (rinsing aid) or drying aid and you nearly have as much time with it as you want while it essentially keeps acting like new... Sure, you can spend extra and brag that you can get an extra 4-6 months, but you won't keep that performance at peak because they do not maintain that performance or offer a simple maintenance option. When you use something like the Griot's as a rinsing/drying aid it just keeps on working with nearly no effort and for comparatively little expense. Of course you can use sprays on top of your coating, but then, what's the point? You nailed it for my time and money Kevin.

I don't know a whole lot about it - it was suggested to try and I tried it. I don't think it's "adding" anything to the panel, but why would it be more hydrophobic for some of these just letting it dwell, as opposed to washing with it? It's a bit unusual

@@ScottHD I think that’s the whole point of descale, to bring back hydrophobics by unclogging. It’s still working, even if it’s just dwelling. BH Auto Foam only dwells and works outstanding as a pre wash.

@@ScottHD Do you have your address posted anywhere? I would like to send you a product, it's advertised as a water spot remover but does nothing for water spots. It's more of a "unclog" the pores of the coating product. One of my cars has OG Kenzo and is washed maybe once every 15 months, it came back to like new. Same with System Diamond SS and Pro. My vehicles have a minimum of 8 different coatings on them for test purposes, they see all the contamination of the road and are rarely washed. 2 reasons for the lack of washing, main is to put them through a torture test and second, working 9 days a week doesn't leave a lot of time to maintain my fleet of vehicles.

I’ve been using Descale now for the past 4-5 months for my own and all og my client’s cars. I’ve had a really great time bringing a bit more hydrofobicity back to the coatings (I use 1 layer of 3.0 topped with SIC for everyone) and it really do remove a great deal of waterspots. I’ve had them in my studio to look at the waterspots after cleaning them with Surfex HD and carpro reset, and letting Descale dwell for a few minutes, and sometimes handwashing panels twice really seems to remove pretty much all of the waterspots that have been bulding up for up to 6 months on cars that are left outside here in the northen part of norway. I also went very hard on my own car with carpro spotless 2.0 a few months ago, cause I cound not remove the waterspots that had been building up for about a year after I coated it and it WORKED!

I stopped using the CG Honeydew years ago because I could tell it was leaving a film on the paint. I don't recommend it.
