Second and last part of BMW i3 33 kWh (94 Ah) road trip. In this part, I travel from Trondheim and back to Oslo. On the way back I found out that the suicide doors were very useful when loading a 47" TV in the car.

Norwegians are so nice; you confront a fossil ICEing driver in North America and the they will shit talk you, start swearing at you, call the chargers useless, call you a liberal etc. Even their thought process is in terms of fossil :D I'm just going to have to wait next year until the 2017 33kWh cars become cheaper (BMW Canada knows it has a good product and the lease rates are crazy). I'm probably going to go for the REx simply because Canada is like a 3rd world country when it comes to DC Fast chargers.

Btw. the "Auto Steer" thing is sold as "Stauassistent" (traffic jam assistant) in Germany, so that's the reason it is limited to 60km/h: It's only supposed to be used in congestion, it's not supposed to be like a real autopilot or something. The i-drive has really reliable voice control as well. For me, it's very convenient to enter a new destination into the sat nav this way. It recognised almost every street and town name.

That cup holder under the arm rest can come out and slot into the front . The best thing about the center console is their is no tunnel separating footwells and the console is also flat and at seat height. Which means if your driver door is blocked or opens into heavy traffic it is amazingly easy to slide across and slip out the opposite door. It was designed this way and I think this might be unique to i3 and is certainly useful feature.

I think the BMW throttle pedal modulation is done on purpose. One is to not alienate the drivers of fossil cars with its instant hair-trigger response of torque and the second I'm theorizing has to do with the i3 extremely narrow tires which is probably the reason why compared to all other EV the i3 has relatively low torque rating of 184lb/ft (the Bolt make 266lb/ft and the e-Golf has 200lb/ft). Does the initial throttle lag bother me? Electric motors still generate max torque at 0rpm so even with the delay the i3 still is amazingly zippy around down & still the most fun to drive EV outside of the Model S which is 2x its price.

I have ordered an Ioniq EV, I was tempted by the I3 but it was too expensive for me, with just a few 'extras' the price quickly rose above 40,000€. Good video, Bjørn! Please do keep the non-Tesla videos coming though! These videos are some of the best resources available for aspiring EV drivers to get a feeling for what various cars are like on long distance trips. Teslas are great, but the ones that I would have a prayer of being able to afford (i.e. ones without an S or X in the name) are often compromised in ways that I think are likely to rule them out for me (microscopic trunk opening on the 3, anyone?) So I hope you'll keep the reviews of "normal" EVs coming too! I'll take an Ioniq with a bigger battery as soon as it's available, if it meets your standards :-)

On some 11kW AC chargers, the i3 sometimes behaves a bit differently compared to home socket or DC fast charging. Sometimes I have to re-plug, because if you do it in the wrong order, the car will sometimes give you a message that the supply voltage is low, although it's perfectly fine if you try it one more time. It may have something to do with the doors or the state of the driving switch. I have yet to figure out completely what is going on...

What is your opinion. I am looking to buy a second hand electric car. The choice so far given price of around £15000 - 18000, is small battery REX or a large battery leaf. The b250e merc is also on my radar at the extremes of my budget. what do you think. I do 60 mile round trip (UK) to work with the occasional long journey. I would love to here from you given you vast experience.
@hawedehre
@hawedehre 5 жыл бұрын
I had the same plan. My daily commute is 120 km. Got a fully loaded 60 Ah Rex. I love it. I used approximately 15 l for 3000 km, the rest I was able to go electric. The REX takes away range anxiety completely, which is a fantastic feature, even if people might moan that it is not pure electric. The Mercedes B is quite unusable because it has no DC support.
@beforebefore
@beforebefore 4 жыл бұрын
Have you done any "range per charge" with the 33kWh i3 ? I presently have a 2015 BEV which I bought (used) when I was only driving 34 miles/day... but now I drive 80 miles/day work commute, so I'm considering upgrading to a used 2017 model so I can hopefully go round-trip and only charge at home (which is dirt-cheap where I am). Public charging costs me an average of $3.50USD for 15kWh, but at home it would only cost me about $0.50USD... a big incentive to get the bigger battery. I will not get the REX... that defeats my original intent to jump-ship from gasoline. My concern is Winter range when it's 0°C down to -10°C. I've noticed on my 2015 that the 37°F (2.7°C) warning must be when the heat pump is no longer effective, and must use resistive heating... because the range takes a big hit below that point.
@beforebefore
@beforebefore 3 жыл бұрын
@John Edwards Not having the routine maintenance of the ICE engine REX is the freedom I need... I've been maintaining my own vehicles since 1977, and am just tired of the mess. I will be selling my 2015 in favor of the 2017 or later 93Ah probably within the year... I've almost paid off this one in the 2 years we've had it. With the REX, you're always hauling around that 350 extra pounds, which is about 13% more than the BEV.
@aukanmeister
@aukanmeister 2 жыл бұрын

And we also love it so much, it will be hard saying goodbye. In Czech Republic it is not that great with charging stations, but hopefully it will become better over the time. We have that situation in south Germany at the moment, they built many new fast chargers, but the markings and signs will be done only later, supposedly because they can't do it in winter. So the fast chargers are sitting next to ordinary parking spots, and are usually ICEd... A pity, because many of them are still usable free of charge.
@pesilva_93
@pesilva_93 7 жыл бұрын
Bjorn the bottom of the trunk is not usable because it's where the electric motor is and not only the range extender (if equipped)... The electric motor is on the left side and the range extender (if equipped) on the right.... That's why is not usable even in the non range extender version. :)

BMW could have went a step further and add in a small storage compartment (similar to the frunk) next to the electric motor assembly in the i3 BEV since the area of the range extender becomes unused. But then again in the BEV version there is actually an aluminium cross-member sitting where the REx engine would be; so my guess it is actually a stress member of the chassis so something has to hold the car together.
@JA-ev1ho
@JA-ev1ho 7 жыл бұрын
But BMW claim it is born electric... they should have designed it so the BEV version don't have that fair amount of wasted space where the REX should be. Perhaps have designed it so the drive unit could be reconfigured to be low and wide instead of tall and narrow. Or made it so a REX module could be plugged in when you need to go on a long trip...

+Thomas Wolf I don't think the battery is smaller on the REX. The decrease in range is due to the added weight of the REX and fuel tank, plus no heat pump. EPA range is 183 km for BEV vs. 156 km REX
@Trades46
@Trades46 7 жыл бұрын
Well the REx then adds ~110km per tank to your trip, and can keep doing so indefinitely until the next gas or charging station. Also the REx heater is no slouch; it may not be as energy efficient as heat pump but it does well in -10degC (at least when I test drove mine).
@davetravels9273
@davetravels9273 7 жыл бұрын
+Trades46 definitely, but then if you are buying the i3 REX because you need the range, maybe the i3 isn't for you? It is also not very efficient to run the REX (7-8l/100 km) and you don't want to stop every hour to refill the tank. The REX really should only be used as a security blanket or perhaps those few times you need to travel longer distances. It is no Chevy Volt. Also, in some regions you do not get the same government incentives for the REX as the BEV, but that will depend on your market.
@Trades46
@Trades46 7 жыл бұрын
Dave Travels We do in Canada. Also if you live outside any major city, I feel the REx is better simply because the amount of DC Fast chargers is almost a joke in comparison to Norway. Add to our equally cold temperatures, I rather take the REx and be safe than sorry.
@davetravels9273
@davetravels9273 7 жыл бұрын
+Trades46 understandable, but I would be even more inclined to go for the 94 Ah with heat pump in your case given the cold temperatures. From what I have read, the i3 has far less of a range detriment in winter than other EVs, especially the Leaf, AND if you precondition. If that doesn't work, then why not hold off for more EVs with larger batteries to come to the market? You could also consider the Ioniq EV, which has also been show to super efficient, even in cold temps. Finally, don't you guys have the Bolt? I don't know where you are in Canada, but I heard that you can get $14k CAN in rebates in Ontario!

As much as I like Tesla, I love these other EV reviews. No traditional car journalist is crazy enough to take a e-Golf or i3 BEV way outside of city limits and test their real world range in freezing temperatures. Affordable EV will be majority of what the population drives, not $100,000+ Teslas. For that Bjorn I want to extend a thank-you; you probably made me a bigger EV nut than I originally was from your electric car road trips in cars obviously not designed for them.

@MayContainJoe
@MayContainJoe 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to object, but there is a lot of incorrect information on the Internet. An LCD (the liquid crystal display itself) is made of multiple layers of thin glass with liquid crystals between them. Also it's not unusual to have a layer of air (!) between the panel and the protection screen in front of it, so knocking the front of the TV won't risk breaking the panel immediately. But that means the panel - only supported at the edges - bends under its own weight and may crack due to gravity when laid down, especially when it gets bumped up and down then. It's not the robust front screen which might break, it's the display panel behind it making the TV a total loss immediately. Have a look at a cut through a typical monochrome LCD on electronics.howstuffworks.com/lcd2.htm TV panels are built the same way with a backlight instead of a mirror (by default LCDs are transparent). Only the newest curved LCDs feature plastic layers.

This BMW looks very untidy (or cheap) made. Lots of gaps between the panels, door seals etc.

I like the suicide doors but the car is a disposable EV once you're involved in a crash. Good luck repairing that carbon frame.

All (ALL!) BMW i3's ever produced have been recalled in the USA. So much for german quality.

Today I stopped at the local BMW dealer to see i3 for myself. What a disappointing car. I am 182 cm and when I sit in the driver seat I could not fit on the backseat. Backseat space are tiny - it is more like a two person car. Then there are the rear doors - what!! total fail design. If my daughter needs to hop on board she has to open a front door, then the rear door, close rear door - what about the front door now - assuming she used right side which will usually be the case - you do not go to left side and stand on the road to get in. Come on complete useless design. Here in DK EV's can't sell by the way. They are too expensive and charging is also expensive. No competition for an ICE car for now. Hybrids like Toyota Auris could be an option - but why can't it tove a little standard trailer? Again the ICE model can. EV's makers - get into the game. For now no EV's for me. Have to wait and see what a model 3 can offer. An X is too expensive here. Stupid government.
