The ERJ will forever hold a place in my heart. My first flight rocketed out of ICT to ORD to make a connection on the mighty AA 777 to LHR. Essentially, the ERJ is the plane that allows me to see the world easIly and conveniently. The plane itself is fast, efficient, safe and performs her duties perfectly. You’re one lucky guy and I hope to be on one one of your flights sometime.

As an aviation student in college, I want to know what are your career and planning suggestions as a regional jet pilot. What would you have done or done better if you have the current understanding of the industry back when you were in college. For example: Should I put a lot of emphasis on my GPA? or it doesn't seem to be relevant to the airlines. Should I spend some more money to become an MEI or it is not worth the money?

A. Phillip Old comment but are you sure about that? Twenty three to start training for your ATPL. I don’t know if that has something to do with you region but here in Iceland we can start an Integrated ATPL program at 18 with all necessary education. After the program were granted a “frozen ATPL” which any Icelandic airline accepts.

I just finished my first month of line flying in the ERJ175. The auto-throttles and vnav capabilities do spoil you, but you still have to know what you’re doing, because the autopilot doesn’t always give you the desired result. Sometimes it forgets or decides it would rather go do something else. No trailing link gear but it is an easy landing airplane. I’m based in LGA. I’ve been to your base ORD already. I’ll keep an eye out for ya.

Bob Shaw - I don’t have a degree. So, the regionals will be as far as I can go. I cannot say where I work as I don’t have an agreement as Swayne does to represent the company. I got my PPL, Instrument, Commercial, Multi and CFI and CFII in 2004 when I was 32. I worked for a few years and left due to low pay. I just recently came back last fall at age 46. I am not a typical case. My last stop will be the regional where I work since I am not qualified to go to a major airline.
@StevenJohnson7375 жыл бұрын
CloudStreets I wouldn’t rule out a major because you don’t have a degree. I’m guessing you fly the 175 for a different company that doesn’t have a flow through? You still have a good bit of time left in your career and LCCs are starting to get desperate for pilots with the looming shortage. One of my buddies went to Spirit straight from the right seat of a regional. Doesn’t hurt to try.

My usual route where I fly in jets this size switches back and forth between ERJ-140/145's and CRJ-2/200's. I greatly prefer the ERJ-145. I like the 1-seat side and the big windows placed so that you can see out of them. The CRJ-2, etc. have the windows situated so that someone who sits tall (long torso) cannot see out of the window (down only, and that is awkward). ERJ-145 is much more comfortable (especially for viewing).

The CRJ-700 & 900 have a floor that's a few inches lower, plus larger windows than the 200 which corrects the downward only view you mention.

I'm a mechanic with a United regional carrier. I work primarily on the XRs. The winglets, strakes, and ventral tank make it a very different plane. Fun little jet. Its small size makes it easy to work on. Also, little secret for you pilots, if the APU is on MEL, it most likely still works. Before you call for the huffer, try starting it up. If you can get it started, use it for one engine start, then shut it back off. Saves a little time. Us mechanics do it for taxiing all the time. Don't worry about hurting the APU. The FADEC is smart enough to cancel starts that could damage the APU. Once tried to start one with the starter/gen wired backward. The system didn't even let it turn. ERJs are pretty fool-proof. Amazing planes.

Hey Mr. Swayne, thank you for the amazing videos you produce for the public to see. I am a 17 year old Private Pilot who was born in Chicago, and I currently live in Houston. As a child, I flew on the erj-145 a lot. This was because my grandparents use to live in Huntsville, AL, plus I had to fly on a lot of connection flights from Chicago to get to Houston (or vice versa) because the seats were always full on the nonstop flights. I aspire to fly for Southwest Airlines when I grow up, but I plan to fly for ExpressJet beforehand. I appreciate this video because I will forever admire this airplane for all the memories I have of flying on it, so it'll be great for me to fly it one day. I hope you fly the 737 next, that is my number one favorite plane and I would love to expand my knowledge on the amazing aircraft through your videos!! Keep up the good work man.

Thank you so much for the video. You made me much more confident about perusing aviation as a carrier due the fact that you showed us that all of the controls are neatly organized in a logical and coherent fashion. I knew to a extent that the controls had to be somewhat organized but when you exposed us to the controls it changed my perception and understanding of the cockpit. Thank you so much!

Mr. Martin, thanks for this AWESOME video. I'm in the process of deciding to move on with my aviation career and one of the airlines I'm evaluating is Envoy. Due to this particular professionally filmed video, I'm a little closer to make my next move. This video help me a lot fall in love with the ERJ-145. I think is a beautiful and hi tech airplane.

People often ask me if i want to fly transatlantic flights someday, and are surprised when I say no! I would much rather fly shorter regional routes like such if the ERJ-145. And Swayne, a question: what are some differences between the 145/140, and the 135?

@nightstalker I am not saying I wouldn't like to fly internationally, I just find that smaller regional airports have a certain sense of adventure to them. And that adventure in discovering "hidden gems" so to speak is what a would like to do.

@@j_eldridge Mabey consider flying corporate, you get to fly into new airports all the time and you can fly anywhere between a 30 min jump to a 7 hour transatlantic crossing.

Try domestic flights with majors. The flight aren’t usually more than 6 hours and you can fly 737s

The biggest difference is just the length....Now the E145XR is a different animal. Envoy doesn’t not fly them. Gear, thrust rating on the engine and fuel systems are all different
