I think it started off as KZbin videos about someone spotting a new Mob, hiding behind treelines, around the corner of the screen, stalking the player. At that time, Minecraft is also really known for liminal spaces and creepy cave noises. People started making mod packs, fan videos about him and got really popular among fans. People also speculated that Mojang(company that owns Minecraft) might have secretly added Him without telling the fans. I remember thinking he was real when i was young.
