what if you need medical care on the road? (Urgent surgery/biopsy abroad)
For the last 4 years we've been travelling full time in our self converted campervan all over Europe. Wild camping and parking up in beautiful locations from Scandinavia to the South of Spain, and it really is living freely, it's liberating not to be fixed to one place and have new adventures on you (sliding) door step every single day.
But one question we get a lot, and most peoples concern with living a nomadic life, off the grid is.. "But what do you do when you need a doctor?" "where do you go for medical help?" or (like us in this weeks video) "What if you need an operation, urgent biopsy and tests?"
Well finally, here in Portugals Algarve, we can finally show you just what its like navigating a medical issue whilst travelling!

As usual, we have tried to include a bit of everything, some cinematic scenery mixed with our usual female van life foolery, we always love hearing what you lot think in the comments so do let us know, and as always, thank you for watching!
Follow us on our journey as we attempt to create a proper youtube travel series as we, two female travelers and vanlifers, attempt to travel across Europe in our rolling tiny home.

Hi girls. Here’s my recent experience - I had an accident whilst in Spain this year, fracturing my shoulder and 50% torn a tendon - basically couldn’t move my arm. Went to a private Euro clinic in Benidorm and saw a (Dutch) doctor, had two X-rays and an ultrasound all within 2 hours. Had a follow up consultation and another two X-rays over the following fortnight (so we had to stay in the area) and was then told we could head off to finish our trip but to rest, keep my shoulder in a sling whilst walking and see my doctor when I got home. Back home in UK now, I saw my doctor on Monday and I’m still waiting for a referral to the fracture clinic….. Yes, we had to pay for all our treatment in Spain but it all came to about €350. The health system in Spain has been fabulous, as has our Insurance company who have already paid out for our claim. Glad Emily had similar quick treatment and hope the biopsy comes back all clear. Lorra love and best wishes Rachael. xx

I'm from New Zealand and got sick (twice!) in Croatia. First time in Plitvice Lakes which was a bit of a drama. Because we were so remote, the ambulance wouldn't come. My husband called our insurance company and our options were to have me airlifted or pay a private driver. Air lift wasn't feasible as we had our two girls with us (8 and 10) at that time and the chopper could not take us all. By this stage I had gone into shock and was vomiting non-stop so not ideal to go on my own in that state and not speaking Croatian. We ended up with a private driver (not sure who organised that). I was driven about 40minutes to a private clinic but they said I was too complex and had to go to the hospital. The driver was amazing, by the time we arrived at the hospital, our girls were asleep in the back of his van and he pretty much looked after them while my husband was with me. Fast forward about five days I got sick again in Dubrovnik. Ambulance again and to the next hospital. I then needed a follow up with a specialist (we were in Split by then). The whole system in Croatia was also great, super friendly staff who spoke good English when I was able to speak for myself. My hospital notes were in Croatian but a manager organised for them to be translated to English for us so we had two copies depending on where we were. Health care was also very cheap. It ended up costing about NZ$3,000 all up so we just paid upfront and claimed on our insurance when we got home (you can get prior approval from our insurance company so they pay the hospital upfront to a certain amount depending on your policy and then you pay the rest). Glad you had a straight forward experience too. I've not long found your channel and currently binge watching to catch up so not sure how the leg turned out yet . . . . but really enjoying your vlogs.

I broke my leg in Germany, no problem, nice German doctor plastered me up and I claimed most of the cost back from insurance. I can't stress enough that you need insurance and make sure that it covers the activities you are doing, like skiing or scuba etc. The NHS is wonderful if you have a minor ailment or are seriously ill: they fixed my heart attack problem really quickly!, But you can languish on a waiting list for a long time for treatment that is not life threatening. BUT my advice is: don't get ill in the USA, it's expensive! I hope that biopsy is negative. Get well soon Emily.

Emily, I’m so glad you were able to get such quick attention for the mole. I’ll say a prayer for you for a good outcome on the biopsy. Had you been in the US, my home, that process would have probably taken you every bit of 6 weeks or longer and been much more expensive. I’d guess $5000 US dollars or maybe around 4000 pounds. Plus, you would probably had to have seen a minimum of 2 doctors, maybe 3. It’s nuts. I’ve waited over 4 months before to get into a specialist. Anyway, glad that’s mostly over for you. Big congrats on 100k. I’m surprised it’s not more. You’re my favorite couple on you tube and the videos I most look forward to. Save travels back to Ireland. It's so important to get those moles checked. Good job on getting it taken care of asap. I learned that the hard way in the middle of the pandemic, I thought the docs would be too busy to deal with the little spot on my arm that had been there since I was a kid but was changing shape. Glad you’ve had it removed and you’re doing well. I had a skin cancer removed {SCC} last year while travelling full time solo in my van in Australia. First doc misdiagnosed it as acne! But 3 weeks later it was still growing/changing on the daily. By that time i was a further 1000km up the road, found another GP who straight away said it’s coming off and i had it removed 4 days later. Same as Emily, couldn’t walk much. Mine was on the back of my upper leg. But being solo I still had to drive myself to appointments and shop for food etc but I stayed put in a caravan park until I was given the all clear to move on. Since then I’ve had skin mapping done so that i can see any GP and they can see any changes in spots, well worth doing in my opinion. Take care both of you xx

Even in US hospitals, none of the staff seem to know there is actually "bandage adhesive remover" which is a specialized solvent that makes it much easier to remove bandages. I don't know if pharmacies there carry it, I found it on Amazon after seeing it mentioned in a wound care book. A lot of nurses use alcohol, which does nothing. Congrats on the 100k, and hoping your biopsy comes back clear.

I had a suspected heart attack on Kos. I nearly had another 4 in the 150kmh dash to the hospital sharing an ambulance with a young lad who had stepped on a tennis ball and had hit foot at right angles to where it was supposed to be. The driver didn't slow down for hairpin bends on cliff roads. The hospital looked like it had not been decorated since the 1950s but the care was second to none. It was pre Brexit so my wife just waved the EU health card at them while I was taken for tests. I was kept in overnight and my wife asked the person who we thought was the cardiologist about getting a taxi to the other side of the island back to our hotel and he pointed to one of the empty beds on the ward and said that she could use that. When I was thanking everyone the next morning before we left, it turned out that the cardiologist was, in fact, the hospital porter and he was doing all of the talking because he spoke the best English. When I saw my own consultant when we arrived home, he was amazed at the number and qualify of the tests that they had performed.

I live in Mexico, on the Pacific, and my insurance is in New York. Last April I developed a fast growing irregular lesion across my cheekbone-4". I went to a Mexican surgeon, and he operated on the spot, using plastic surgery stitches, (option #1), and a biopsy (option #2), took out stitches 2 weeks after. It was $300 US. The emergency room here is free. I've had a fracture set, and stitches there for free. Drs. attached to pharmacies are $2. Meds are pretty much all over the counter

Luckily someone could check if my van was safe those days I was admitted. Never again I thought. So one month later I was in urgencias again,🙃. But perfect healthcare, 10/10, would not do it again though. I'm planning on going to the UK in an month or so, but my health keeps getting me drawn to hospitals. It was "in situ" meaning it was contained so when the margins are clear, it's gone and no further treatment was required just regular skin checks. Hope it's not too late with this tip but cling film is great for keeping water away from bandages and dressings. Just wrap your leg in that stuff and you won't splash it.

When I lived in Spain in 2008/9 My stepdaughter started having stomach pains. We took her to the GP who did a quick examination of her then said she would need to go to the local hospital for xrays. We thought she would have to wait a week or two for the appointment, but were told to go later that day. Off we went and checked in ( using a bar coded medical card. After a short wait she went in for the x-ray. On completion we were told to go back to the GP for the results. Again we thought it was going to be a few weeks, but we were told to go back in a couple of hours. We got to see the GP later and discussed the results with him. All in one day which in my books is excellent.

Oh dear! I had that done! They called me it was cancer so I had to go back. Honestly, I was worried over nothing. They numbed me up, got everything all sterile and cut a 4x4 chunk out of my thigh. ( while I talked a mile a minute) They have a way to check the edges to see if they are all clean. Stitches and off you go. When I got my results it was all clear. But I have little ones all over my legs. I was a sunshine girl!!!!! You did great! PS the numbing will wear off. Take care.

Hi glad your health issue is sorted. I can say that having a similar issue in Oz was the best place to be for skin clinics. Same process then returned to home in France . Unfortunately a worse mole & bigger op needed in France. All wonderful & eventually all clear for over ten years. X

My mom had a Stage 4 melanoma, which was scary as f*ck; but she got it removed & treated quickly, & lived 45 more years. Because of that family history, every time a freckle gets out of hand, I've had to have it removed for a biopsy. It's been maybe half a dozen times, all benign so far 🤞. I'm American, & all of this has taken place in the US; & my & my mom's health care experience has been no more or less f*cked up than the US health care system is in general. The best thing for you to do, for now, is to operate on the assumption that the biopsy will come back benign. It probably will. 😃

Hey there - we met you at camping Albufeira a few weeks ago (Emily was off for a hair appointment)! Firstly, we're so please all is well with the surgical procedure and sounds like the system in Portugal was really efficient. You asked about experiences with medical stuff, and I recently had a dental issue after a large chunk of my tooth broke off. We were still around 5 weeks from returning to the UK so I visited a dentist in Adra, Spain, recommended by a solicitor we met in a bar. I phoned at 10am the following morning and was given an appointment at 11am. The dental practice was uber clean, efficient and after 50 minutes with a lovely dentist I came out with a temporary filling and a bill for..........45 euros! OK, I've rambled on but wanted to share this. Lastly, well done to you both on 100K subscribers - raising a glass to you both and love your channel. All the best, Bridget & Stephen xx

Why did it take so long to get to 100K subs? - This is the best U-Tube channel and you two, despite getting on into middle age now (you said it the other day on a post !), are like a pair of 16 years olds. And this after some 15 ? years together and 9 years married. Genuine joy on your faces as you tell your adventures, I pissed myself laughing yet again.

I needed medical care while camping in the middle of nowhere in a different state. I got a moth stuck in my ear, had to sleep with it in my ear overnight and then had to drive 3 hours to the nearest hospital. Didn't have any wait to be seen by an ER doctor and I was the most popular patient that morning. I have no idea how much my medical insurance paid for getting that blasted bug out of my ear but I had to pay $500.00 for my share of the bill.

I had a melanoma removed when I was thirteen. I'm 57 now so the key is to get it early. As for care, I spend my life travelling the world and dealing with healthcare systems in every country I visit. The NHS isn't perfect, but will always sort you out, whereas my personal experience with the US has been nothing short of poor and costly. France, Spain, Italy and Germany great but Japan is in a different league. However, the key is to have good cover and declare everything. Insurers will use any get out they can. Anyway, glad you got seen quickly and hopefully it's nothing to worry about. 👍

About ten years ago I strained my back muscles chopping firewood and hoped that it would go away if I rested and avoided lifting. However, two days later I took a friend's mother for a hospital appointment in Mediaș, Romania. After the 30 minute drive I had great difficulty getting out of my car so my friend, her mother and her sister who had come with us, insisted I saw a doctor in the "Urgență" section. I was given a cortisone injection and a prescription for about five drugs (pain killers, muscle relaxants and anti nausea capsules). No charge for the examination and injection and reduced prices for the drugs because I was over 65. The doctor told me to stay in bed for a week but the drugs, one of which was very powerful and not available in the UK, worked exceptionally well and I was back to normal and out of bed after four days bed rest. I'm nearly 78 now and still chopping logs but have improved my technique and never chop for more than 30 minutes.
