The video below represents around 11 hours of work compressed into a 10-minute video. As you can see the scan we used in this video was very noisy. As I'm sure a lot of you know by now Photogrammetry works by picking up surface details on an object and comparing corresponding points on multiple images to triangulate the position of the camera and hence work out the depth map and construct the geometry. This model, in particular, had very fair skin which resulted in the noisy scan due to lack of reference points. To find out more about this process it might be worth reading our scanning reflective objects tutorial which goes into the subject in a bit more detail. tinyurl.com/hr...
I used a combination of, Reality Capture for Scanning, Zbrush for cleanup, Wrap 3 for mesh conforming, Photoshop and body paint for texturing, Lightwave for modeling and Modo for rendering.
All the scans and scene files from this article are available as part of our Female 07 Animation Ready Scan pack. Click the link above for more details.

Maddy yea it’s quite hard to get right and fairly expensive at render time too. So not something that has always been seen as a priority. I think like you say it will start to become more common place in character pipelines as the hardware gets faster and the software gets better.

Wow phenomenal work, Amazing tutorial! What would be the best option for scanning a person, photogrammetry? Plus would I have then turn in place or go 360 around them? How did you get such a clean scan? Also how many pictures did it take?
@3dscanstore
@3dscanstore 2 жыл бұрын
Thankyou so much. We are using a 180 camera system for our captures but if you wanted to do it by hand with a single camera the key is the keep very still. Moving during capture process will greatly reduce the quality of the scan. The best way is actually to have the subject lie on their back on something like a pillow to support their head so it doesn’t move. Then take as many images as you can whilst keeping sharp focus and in as neutral light as possible. You won’t get the back of the head with this method but it will give you much better results as someone sitting up with an unsupported head moves too much during the time it takes to take the photographs. I hope this helps.

James Busby Oh. I see. I'm thinking of photoscanming where you take multiple pictures from different angles and the computer generates point cloud data from that. Also yes, shaving a cat sounds like both a hassle for the person shaving the cat and the cat itself.

That is waaaaaaaaaaay too fast, Would be more interesting if it was slow enough to actually see what you are doing, Sure the video would be around an hour and it would still be a timelapse which is crazy long for a timelapse but id rather spend 1 hour watching something that is slow enough to see what you are doing than wasting 10 minutes of my life watching a video where i cant see a shit. And if you really want to keep the video shorter you can cut out some pieces of the videos that is just repeated over and over. Thats my opinion atleast. Anyway it was a good final result and i would love to subscribe if you slow down your videos

Sorry James Busby: I mean like have you learned any methods similar to how Game Developers construct and complete a video game characters world? [example Lara Crofts] 3D arena/world created from conceptual artwork ~ to final rendition using software like ~ Maya 3D ? Like that which they discuss and show on Mapcore.org forums Or are you in your own / different areas of digital rendering?
@3dscanstore
@3dscanstore 6 жыл бұрын
Sinister Snacklepuss ahh ok :) we don’t really do environment work at the studio. But I did used to be an environment artist at Argonaut games about 12 years ago so had a lot of experience modelling worlds. But that was back when PS2 was around. Things have changed a lot since then with software like unreal engine and unity everything is a lot easier and out of the box.

Shockers 32 is not late! I started doing scanning and cleanup work like this when I was the same age. I’d never done anything like this until I was 32. I was mainly a technical modeller and TD before this, although I had done a bit of character work. Keep it up mate you will get there!

Awesome job mate! I think she would look more realistic and fitting into the environment if this skin had less specular/reflection. You may have gotten slightly confused with the properties of pale skin vs shading it. Apart from that, all I would say is that I can tell fairly easy that it's not photo-realism quality, but it's so close and better than I can do. (I've studied game-art dev and now film VFX). awesome work.
@3dscanstore
@3dscanstore 6 жыл бұрын
Thankyou :) Yea, to be honest, I never really intended it to be photorealistic, I was actually trying to push it the other way a little bit just to make a nice render. I know what you mean about the skin, I look back at it now and all I can see is the spec! Next time I'll try it with a cross polarised head scan and properly captured reflectance.

netflix review modelling and sculpting and scanning are very different skills for a very different industry to traditional art / drawing.. 3D models like this are used for things like video games, movies, VFX and animation. What your suggesting is that rather than creating Call Of Duty or Tomb Raider using modern 3D modelling techniques it would have been quicker to draw all the game characters and environments?

Great video James, i actually followed along and did a full body but the eyes were open, any clue on how do i make the eyes lids close? i want to do this because i want to 3D print a solid life size head bust for cast and molding and i want to use animatronics to open/close the eye lids and well if i go that far with eyes wide open i cant never get that deformation from when the eyes close, hope you can point me in the right direction
@3dscanstore
@3dscanstore 6 жыл бұрын
For the eyes, its always best to have another scan with them closed, then if you create the right amount of polygon loops on the eyes open scan its easy to modify the mesh to conform to the eyes closed scan and also project the texture. If you dont have an eye closed scan its a case of modelling / sculpting the eyes closed by hand. I hope this helps.
