For the nerdstalgia niche, this is the best channel out there. Only issue is it’s niche. I have no doubt this channel could do mainstream material and get even bigger, but Peri does it for the love of the game. The man needs a federal grant.

I would never admit it at the time, but I was always slightly envious of commodore kit. I had a spectrum then an ST and was obsessed, but always secretly coveted a c64 and later an Amiga. There was just something so chunky and awesome about them.

So glad to find your channel because I really enjoy troubleshooting videos… Although I have no interest in retro computing… I restore a lot of vintage and modern test equipment and industrial electronics stuff… And I’m a sucker for a good long format component level troubleshooting videos. Outstanding job Peri! You put my own SX-64 refurb to shame 😭. Now I gotta put my handle in the dishwasher. I’m very glad you didn’t have keyboard issues. What a pain it was for me to fix. Anyway, the SX-64 is a really neat machine and I’m very lucky to have gotten one for a great price. I wish they made a portable 128 similar to an SX-64. That would’ve been my all time favorite retro computer.

Someone was inside that machine - normally the storage tray is also screwed in on the CRT side, too, and you cannot get to it or the drive without removing the CRT. I left the screw out after cleaning mine, too to make it easier to access in the future. What a lovely machine.

I've always liked these "luggable" computers. In their own way, they are the first real ultra-portable computers. They are their own case, all you need is to bring the power cable and a bit of software, and they were just as powerful as their full-size counterparts. Not like today, where everything requires a dongle, laptops are built with dramatically underperforming hardware compared to the home desktop, and you need a bag to lug around the computer, power brick, and any peripherals you might possibly need.

When my grandmother upgraded to a Commodore 128, I was given her SX-64 as a hand-me-down. In 1991, the screen went dead, and without a proper monitor it was pretty well unusable, and I ended up getting a 386 clone as a replacement right before starting college. Don't think I don't kick myself regularly now for letting the old SX-64 end up in a landfill when it was probably just a blown capacitor or fuse! This computer was a big part of my childhood, its where I first learned basic programming, and your restoration of that one looks lovely now.

Fantastic restoration (as always) Mr Fractic in taking a SUX64 and turning it into a SXY64! All semantic jokes aside, the SX64 was quite revolutionary and relatively "portable" by 1984 standards - much easier than lugging around a full sized monitor, C64 and 1541. And as the "Are you keeping up with the Commodore?" advertisement and your gobsmacking recreation proves, it wasn't a computer it was a lifestyle choice - pool and open necked shirt optional! I'm sure Ferris Bueller would have owned one.

The handle design is pretty standard for CRT oscilloscopes of the era, maybe not a household format but in every electronics lab everywhere. The same carry/stand is on some ham radio equipment and other electonics test equipment. I don't know if they took an existing case (is it 19" as well?) and put fun plastic on it rather than scientific beige, or just took the format idea and ran with it. The first Compaq PC luggable did this as well IIRC. I remember one being brought home from my dad's work when I was very little.
