Don't feel too bad about the inverted DB plugs: I've seen professional engineers get it wrong too. One more thing: in the quick glimpse of the schematics, it looks like the input of the unused gate is left unconnected. Depending on which logic family you're using, it could increase power consumption and/or oscillate which could inject noise in the adjacent gates. It is considered good practice to ground any unused input. For a prototype, the grounding is often done through a resistor, to allow using that gate if it becomes needed during debugging.

The board looks good, and the 74LS07 buffers are the ideal thing to use, as they have the open-collector outputs (as described in your previous vid). But I would definitely recommend adding decoupling caps (0.1uF / 100nF) close to each chip. Without those, it could be allowing some noise, and possibly causing some oscillation. Don't worry about the mix-up with the connector types. I've done that before. lol

You make this stuff look easy! But projects like this do show how important it is to double and triple check pin outs. At least it was a very easy fix. If you sell the boards or plans, you could have the silk screen indicate that male ports can be put on one side, of female ports can be put on the other side, so the end user has the option.

Peri and Lady (and Puppy) Fractic, I've recently come into possession of an Atari 130XE Computer (American - NTSC). It's my THIRD. It's in BEAUTIFUL condition, a real TREASURE. Unlike my two OTHER 130's, when coupled to my S-DRIVE MAX, I often get a message saying "REMOVE CARTRIDGE" when trying to load certain games or programs. ODD! I don't get this error when loading from my OTHER two 130's, but this one's self-diagnostic shows no problems. I'd be more than HAPPY to DONATE it to you and the lovely Lady Fractic, if you can SOLVE its problem, and add it to your 'happy' library of history's working machines! I'm not NEW to ATARI Computers - owned my FIRST original Atari 800 in 1982, and my Atari 800XL in 1984 - my first 130XE in 1986, and my first 1040ST in 1987, but have never encountered anything like this. If you can pull this 130XE apart and discover what's wrong, this machine is YOURS! It's a 'Beauty'! I just need to know where to SEND it - maybe you have a new 'episode' on your hands!

The very excellent adventures of one man and his joystick. Glad you got it working in the end. Interesting (and weird?) to control 2 different machines with the same stick. Now for something completely opposite. I've actually wondered for some time (I'm non technical BTW) if it is possible to build a splitter cable that goes into port one of the Mega Drive / Genesis and on the other side, has connectors for a Master System controller and Mega Drive controller, so they could both be used when applicable. Because the MD is backwards compatible with the MS but you NEED a MS controller for certain games. I believe there is a solution where you cut a connector in the MD pad or something but it would be neat if a splitter cable existed that was "plug & play".

If there is the possibility of sending this information via Wi-Fi, this dual joystick could be used in several things. One port would go to the computer, and the other port that communicates with it would be a Wi-Fi receiver. I know it's crazy and it will depend a lot on ping. but if you play with people from the same region and you have a ping of 20 or less ... there would be practically no lag, it would be a way to play with 2 real computers online.

Great video, as always! Can I ask why you went for buffers, and not e.g. electrically controllable switches like the CD4066? in the end, what you want the computer to see is a bunch of switches, and something like a CD4066 would emulate that perfectly, while something like a buffer always runs the risk of putting a high voltage (when the button is not pressed) into the computer. The 1K resistors probably lower the chances of that being an issue, but the risk is always there; additionally, the 1K resistors could attenuate the button presses and make them not register on some computers. Maybe something for v2?
@lorinmillsap53724 жыл бұрын
That is actually a good suggestion. The 1000 ohm resistors shouldn’t cause issues on 5v systems but could be too high on a 3.3v system. The CD4066 would probably have been a better choice, but I’m not a professional. I just jumped in and helped because I could.

So I only need to use one old computer at a time, but I get a little frustrated with how the old C64 games don't all use the same joystick port. It seems this could be plugged into joy1 and joy2 on a single C64 so that I'm always set up. BUT that might be an issue with some two player games, what do you think of a version with a toggle switch to flip between activating J1 or J2? Future video idea? Yeah its a first world problem not wanting to manually swap the joystick from J1 to J2 I know.
@RetroRecipes4 жыл бұрын
Well you wouldn't even need the toggle switch, it should just work as the C64 game would ignore the "wrong" joystick port (otherwise that port would've worked).

I always get shivers when I see someone first solder the leads and then cut them -- and not reflow. This is a recipe for disaster a few years from now. Because when you snip, you send a shock wave through the weaker solder going opening it up for air and elements that can cause corrosion and/or expanding and shrinking by heat and that's when solder joints fail. In engineering college we had a teacher who'd build systems for satellites and he was shouting at us when he saw someone do that and ridicule us :D It's absolutely not done in aerospace industry. So I never do it or when I'll reflow the joint -- and it makes it look nice too. We also had to put our dips in without sockets (unless it was expensive -- the hypocrit) because in aerospace the frequent G forces could life an IC out of it's socket -- and apparently it had in the past and made a multi million dollar satellite become a very expensive paper weight :D) But I do like my sockets and I am not shooting my stuff to orbit around the earth :D But the solder joints is something that is very useful knowledge also on this globe. But yet again a wonderful episode! Showing the fails is as useful as showing the successes! WELL DONE!
