I use the SHADOW-Marcduino system. It can be downloaded at www.curiousmarc.com and astromech.net. I have made several changes to customize these systems to suit my build. I recommend using PETG as it is strong and doesn’t warp. You could print in PLA, but it is not as strong and is a little too brittle in my opinion. Eebel

This looks great, nice job overall. What type of filament did you use? It looks like it took a lot of sanding.

I use PETG . In this video I had not dialed in the printer settings. I use PETG for anything structural. I use PLA+ for cosmetic pieces(grreebles).

Step one is to join Astromech.net. That's the official spot to learn about all of the ways to build R2-D2 and other astromechs. Then, you decide how to proceed based on your budget and skills. There is no kit, but there are lots of resources and help.

I sand with 180 grit sandpaper. Then Krylon filler primer., Sand with 220 grit. Fill and divots with Bondo spot glazing putty(not the traditional Bondo that needs to be mixed). I used Rust-O-leu. Metallic silver and Satin White. All of the blue is two layers. Metallic silver base coat and Duplicolor Chromcast Blue.

Is it PLA? I've heard some r2 builders say pla is biodegradable and degrades over time. Have you noticed any changes or is it still good?
@TheEebel2 жыл бұрын
I print all structural components in PETG. I use PLA+ for cosmetic pieces such as greebles. I use TPU, for tires and door hinges and Nylon for some parts that need to be really robust(motor mounts, for example). My printed R2-D2 is a 2018 vintage and is still going strong.

How did you do the single print upper dome part? Only ones I could find are split prints...
@TheEebel5 жыл бұрын
I simply put the two pieces next to each other in the sliver. I use Simplify3D. I aligned the pieces and previewed the print until it came out seamlessly as one piece.
@thatdiyguyraymondmonk12255 жыл бұрын
In cura you can merge the pieces together, but I hope you have a big print bed... mine is 550*550*650

@grahamjones78143 жыл бұрын
How much filament did it take to print and what size bed do you need?
@TheEebel3 жыл бұрын
The filament depends on your individual build. So, it depends on the features you choose and the density of the print. Also, how many print failures you have. It can be done on a 200mm bed. However, if you have a 500mm bed you can print larger pieces and it is easier to build. Most people start with the dome. Once that is done it motivates them to continue. I think you could do the dome in three rolls of PETG.

@TheEebel5 жыл бұрын
@@shawnkrupianik3672 I have had my droid out in public four times. All indoor events on hard surfaces. So far he has held up well. He has endured things such as crashing into a wall and brick sidewalks. The only mod I made was to add ventilation to the battery box so the printed motor drive units would not get too hot.
