It looks like a SLS print so it’s definitely going to be tough. There are many methods of 3d printing if you didn’t know. SLS or (Selective Laser Sintering) it’s probably the strongest of those currently available. It might also be better than aluminum at absorbing shock when dropped or bumped.

@MatHolliday

Its definitely SLS, likely nylon. I use that stuff at work all the time on uas and robot dogs and its pretty amazing. The only time I ever see nylon SLS fail is when its a catastrophic failure, usually of the whole system but that's also by design. I want certain parts to break if enough force is exerted because I'd rather have a $20 SLS part break rather than deforming a $4k vehicle chassis if that part were aluminum.

I'd like to express how grateful we the viewers are that you've got to such lengths to try out so many "budget" options for night vision. Really showing exactly why kit does or doesn't work, instead of just defaulting to "cheap BAD". I'd never heard of the Aeternus before your video, but did some digging and talking with other users and builders, and came to the conclusion that this housing is the one for me. Apparently, LLI have a lifetime warranty on this housing, and just recently started a program to trade in any LLI housing, regardless of age or condition, to put that value towards any of their in house options. I see a company that stands behind it's product and embraces the cutting edge of manufacturing tech, and I had to support it. Anyways, thanks for the video Hop.

It really comes down to the geometry. What you can physically cut into a chunk of aluminum might not be the strongest possible design for something. A lot of geometries can only be made additively. You can also iterate very quickly, so flaws get ironed out faster.

I use a Mod3B housing with a Norotos AKA2 mount. Reason I mention this is because it has a "mid stow" position that is halfway up. This is nice because it allows you to flip fixed bridge binos like the Mod3 and Aeturnus up out of your view, but not necessarily all the way on top of your helmet. It still has the fully stowed position, but its like a Rhino as far as positioning goes. The mid stow doesn't move a goggle up above the top of your helmet line, but it does stick out way forward on your head.

It's nylon, so you should be wary about water absorption, so weather conditions for prolonged use and especially storage. It won't leak it in directly in the rain, but it will absorb moisture over time and condensate it inside, so storing in dry conditions is a must. So much like with Katana but it's not an issue with normal use and storing. It is very rugged tho. As all (?) printed housings from trusted guys/more known civilian manufacturers. Collimation is far from perfect, but that's an issue with all non-OG housings and honestly is hard to notice in normal use. Lack of illuminator doesn't matter at all, just as you said.
@rileyfrench3837
@rileyfrench3837 Жыл бұрын
Collimation is far from perfect? Send it back to the vendor that built yours then. Collimation is the process of getting the ocular lenses adjusted to the same focal plains. It’s not an inherent feature of a housing (any quality housing such as this needs to be collimated by the person who assembles it).

It’s interesting you talk about articulation being a reason one should forgo RNVGs. I would agree that articulation is something that should convince you to just throw down the extra cash, but then I learned of the RPNVGs. Panning RNVGs sold by Steele Industries that can get you 60 degrees of FOV out of a dual tube set up, and they have a lot of really fascinating features. Plastics have definitely come a long way, especially in the 3D printing world as it relates to firearms. Hoffman tactical has really been on top of the list when it comes to 3D printed AR-15 and AR-10 lowers. It's pretty amazing just how strong some of these plastics are and the amounts of pressure they can withstand. Although I didn't expect Hop to throw his NV unit around, it would have been a confidence builder to see him roll down the hill with it on. Lol. Jk Hop. Cheers

I’ve been running a set of RNVGs for about a year now and I’ve kind of learned how to deal with non-articulation; to deal with the high stowing of the unit I keep them down and push them up so they’re in-line with my forehead, to keep situational awareness and being able to do non nv related tasks I run my unit all the way out on a G24 so I can shoot the gap easily to check my phone or even shoot a pistol using white light. The RNVG isn’t the best housing out but I’d say they’re not awful. With that being said though I do want articulation for using thermal.

I can share with a friend when I want to BS and watch the stars, but I also found it cheaper to get dual 2500 FOM L3 WPs in my config. I bought myself a 3D printed Tanto housing from nocturn industries. the reason I go with that one is because I live in Germany and buying prebuilt devices like a pvs-14 would cost me around 4.5k euros (which is pretty bs if you ask me for a gen2+ device probably non mil-spec). I.e I have to build it myself and this is where 3D devices are pretty attractive. Housings can be exported from the US as opposed to fully built devices and IITs. I have to source an IIT locally but for the same money I can have something performing way better. would you want to review some of those as well? Katana, Tanto etc.

I'm going to give you some advice...NV is cool and it is useful, but it pails in comparison to thermals. Spend $2500 and buy a FLIR Breach. Its tiny and helmet mountable. A $2500 NV device is likely shit tier quality. Expect to spend AT LEAST $3K for something just breaking into the realm of good quality when it comes to night vision. And that's just a monocular. $6K would be an extremely cheap price for bino NVGs. Then there's all the other bullshit you have to buy in order to use it. Helmets, mounts, battery packs, wires, IR lasers, weapon mounts, etc. The device is cheap when you add up all the costs for what you need to make it truly useful. Just a good mount will set you back $500. You can hide from night vision pretty easily. It is super fucking hard to hide from thermal imaging. Yes, it doesn't see through glass, but NV doesn't do so hot in that scenario either. If you want to be able to see everything at night, then thermal imaging is where its at.

I enjoy the work that you do man but I have a question it'd be interesting to hear your opinion on why you prefer or recommend the AR-15 over the 8K I know you do a lot of night vision stuff and shooting with suppressors but it'd be interesting to hear your opinion on the matter between those two platforms
@JMLueckeA7X
@JMLueckeA7X 2 жыл бұрын
It probably comes down to a few reasons. ARs are far more common in the US so parts availability is insane compared to AKs, they're far more modular, and you can get a decent AR-15 built to your own specifications for far cheaper than an AK. That's all guesses though we'll see if he responds himself.

I had a katana and moved to the RNVG for reliability. With the G24 it's fairly easy to use the mount to keep the RNVG in a half stow, or tilt the nods to make it easy to look under them. I don't feel like I've lost any useful features, IPD is less "easy" to set but it's basically a one and done deal. I'm not convinced that articulation is worth the decrease in durability.
@totenfurwotan4478
@totenfurwotan4478 2 жыл бұрын
Ill never understand this, your tubes are the most fragile part of the NOD’s and switching to RNVGs dont change that. You are giving up really nice features for a massive “what if” that hardly every happens. If it does happen its just a new housing not an entire new set of tubes. If articulating NOD’s were so weak you wouldn’t see SOCOM using them in theatre

@@totenfurwotan4478 there’s plenty of pictures of sheared PVS-31s lmao. Please trust me as a mechanical engineer, the housing is going to be see a LOT more stress than the intensifier, and that pivot point is absolutely a stress concentrator. The only reason operators use articulation is for when they’re doing close up work like map reading or medical treatment

@@slavsupreme5129 lol I’m a mech eng too that doesn’t make your correct because you saw 5 pictures of 31As broke online. I’ve seen soldiers break a fucking ma deuce. To give up the significant quality of life improvements of articulating binos for the off chance to do something so astronomically stupid you break your housing… is just foolish. Just get the housing replaced and it’s solved.

@@totenfurwotan4478 it’s a simple fact that a hinge like is on the 15s or 31s is going to be an inherently weaker design compared to a solid block of 7075 or 6061 aluminum lmfao. Like I said, the ONLY reasons for articulation is if your going to be doing things in close proximity to yourself, or if for some reason you briefly want a monocular type setup which 99% of the time you won’t be doing. Find me a picture of a broken RNVG housing please. If you’re putting enough force onto a unit to the point you are able to break an intensifier tube through pure shock, I’d be willing to wager you were going out of your way to do some absolute dumb shit to it

@Ayattar55
@Ayattar55 2 жыл бұрын
You mean mono + thermal scope? No deal, I've been doing it since 2017. It's superior for any kind of non-CQB environment. And it's actually cheaper or same price as running binos. 3,5k EUR for a mono, for walking/navigating/having nvd fun and 2,5k for a decent enough 384px scope if you need to, for example, hunt hogs or check the surroundings fast.
