So i recently got to play with some Jerry 31s...while having a Bino on my head was "cooler", the tube performance is what kept bugging me. I see in the video an Omni 4 Gen 3 tube was used in comparison which...is a thick filmed tube which i think was made in the early 2000s and is very very old. But granted if its about affordability - i get it. But the question you mentioned "Low performing duals over high performing monocular". Ive spent my entire military career under a mono. Even working with SF guys in afghanistan who had PVS-15s and me with a little ol' PVS-14, I just got used to it. Ive even done CQB at night under a PVS14 pretty well. Today I still own a Monocular device with an L3 Omni 8 tube which the tube i got for roughly 1200 dollars and threw it in my tanto housing with Carson milspec glass and came in under 2200 total for my set up. When using the Jerry 31s, I couldnt see shit. We had targets 70 meters away and it was so dark i couldnt even see them. Yea, i had duals on my head...but what good is it if theyre not performing? I tried running a few drills with them and I just couldnt. A white light was a better option than those and I had to use IR just to scan for targets, which goes outside of light discipline (or IR discipline). I ran the same drives with my Thin Filmed Gen 3 Omni 8 tube and it was like the sun came back up comared to the Jerrys. I was moving around better because i could actually see, i didnt need IR to scan for the steel targets - I saw them, aimed, and fired. I may be biased to a mono device because I always tell people its "good enough" to get everything done. You most certainly can drive with them as ive done it godddd knows how many times, you can easily navigate in woods with them, you can do everything with them. Are binos easier? Yes...but if you have shit tubes in them, then whats the point? I know 3 friends who got Jerry 31s because it was "BUDGET BINOS!" and they "liked" them...until they looked through a few of our Gen3 tubes. Granted theyre "newer" Gen3 tubes, not Omni 4 tubes made during the invasion of Afghanistan and immediatly sold them and just got a PVS14 and are much much happier. This is just an anecdotal of 1 group of guys, so do take it with a grain of salt. I have seen guys in some FB groups saying they were "good enough" for what they use them for but thats what you need to ask yourself..."What is your use case for nods?" In middle land florida out towards Okeechobee there is absolutely NO light and we tested these devices on zero lum nights and they just were so useless. Im not trying to steer people away from Jerry 31s or NNVT tubes in general...just make sure you know your use case and how dark of an environment you may be in to where you need that performance

I'm in the uk, and the prices on these optice are quite attractive, the J14 being £2100, the J31 being £3200. Compared to the lowest price gen 3 pvs14 (of not much higher FOM than the j31 tubes) being £4500 at least, but to get a better gen 3 pvs14 would be £5000-£7000.

I got the jerry-14 and don't have experience on better tubes, but I know exactly what you're saying. It works with some moonlight or ambient light (from streetlights or in otherwise semi urban setting). I've got around 20 hours of actual (airsoft) use, and in a lot of situations I've had them just raised off because it was more in the way than helping. I have thermal for aiming and observing, and I feel like I could almost do without the tube in a lot of situations. So maybe not the best investment, but I'm still figuring this all out.

The only way to have real stealth is with a passive system. To that end, at least for detection and rudimentary target identification, thermal is the way to go, but it isn't cheap. On the other end is the digital IR. Very affordable, but requires an IR source, which lights you up like a Christmas tree if your enemy has night vision as well. Arguably, analog tubes are somewhere in between, they are capable of boosting available light, even when very little is available, to useful levels without an IR source (although an IR source will enhance performance in very, very dark scenarios) and are better than thermal for detail/target identification. But again, they aren't cheap. The integrated thermal overlays for tube vision makes it even better, but adds significantly to the price. You also need to consider use case scenarios. If you want to get out and move around in a "combat" scenario, then binocular tubes are the way to go. If you're going to be planted in one location, such as your home, there are ways to make good use of even digital IR. Having some super bright IR lights pointing away from your home provides your source for viewing and can be bright enough to blind enemy night vision if they're trying to come at you (think of trying to approach a building with your naked eye while it's shining super bright spotlights in your face). I think thermal is good as an initial use tool, such as a hand held monocular for general passive target detection, then switch to one of the others as needed. For hunting purposes, pretty much any of them will work fine, although it seems some animals can see IR and your IR spotlight can spook them. Either way, no matter how you slice it, good night vision is not cheap.

The ADNV-G14P looks promising, for about $1700 the sensor appears to keep up with Gen 2 and even some older Gen 3 tubes in really dark conditions. It looks like they took a black silicon sensor, removed the color filter and doubled the size of the pixels. It's basically what the Opsin should have been. Granted, it just released on the Chinese market so I'm waiting for Hype Militaria and other English speaking channels to test it before getting too excited.

I disagree on getting less practical use out of a monocular vs duals. My monocular can come with me anywhere in a small pouch and be handheld, so I can take it places and use them without needing a helmet system. Binos don’t have the same luxury, as they are much harder to use when not mounted to your head. Shooting is a minority of my NV time and I like the simplicity of my PVS14 for seeing at night.
@Hoplopfheil9 ай бұрын
I think a mono is way more practical, but binos are way more fun. Individual judgement call.

The AGM wolf 14 has upped its game recently for only $100 more it now features a 45° view angle compared to the old 40° view angle and now accepts standard US G.I. mounting interface the one that uses the screw which will fit any standard J Arm so you no longer need to look for the special FLIR Breach quick detach arm on top of that it’s size and weight has reduced significantly almost to the size of a standard PVS14 when using the CR 123 battery instead of the AA batteries The front glass and back glass of the unit also has been increased as well These units are selling for $1800 on AGM right now and that’s for NL one units with zero blemishes I would say it’s a significant improvement to the old style Wolf, 14 housing Furthermore, the front and rear glass assembly and not to forget the mounting upgrades as well and only for $100 more just doing a quick update regarding the AGM wolf 14 I hope someone finds this helpful

They should make digital optics that doesn’t output IR but only picks it up, it obviously wouldn’t provide “night vision” but it would help you see other IR signatures (such as lights and lasers being used by people with actual NVG) it would at least let you know which direction NOT to go without revealing your position in a sustainment situation Idk maybe a terrible idea just a thought I had about 5 seconds ago watching this

Seems compelling for $4k considering gucci duals cost more than most black market organs. Personally I think if you're buying your first NV device a high end monocular is still a safer bet for $4k because you'll be able to purchase it from a reputable company with a better warranty. If you already own a good gen 2+/3 monocular to serve as a backup then rolling the dice of these chinesium dual tubes feels a lot safer.

I notice most folks dont use eye cups. is there a reason why?
@ChemistyStudent9 ай бұрын
@aodhanoceallaigh8533 Two reasons in my experience so YMMV; the peripheral vision you get around the tube helps you keep track of the light conditions around you, and if you're silhouetting yourself. Other reason is that with eye-cups you can't look really down at your chest/feet/gun. I run a single tube, but have had a chance to run Binos; it's really hard to describe how helpful that peripheral vision is to your situational awareness other than that it is. I'm right hand/right eye dominant and so I run my NVD on my left eye, and use it to focus on things my dominant eye can't make out in the dark. Depending on your glass quality, eye cups make your ocular lens fog up like crazy unless you pre-treated the glass.
