d2 is not even close to the best, there are far superior steels, powder formed etc, M390, s90v, D2 is a good knife steel but by no means is it "the best"
@knivesiguessАй бұрын
Holy hell!! Thanks for the shoutout!! I HAD to do it. I was expecting the usual 4 hours D2 does like clockwork but the results were so far from normal I've done a 7 hour stream, a 6 hour stream, and the 8 hour stream. LOVE the denim micarta scales, man. I made denim micarta one time. The dumbest way possible. Supergluing it one layer at a time for a pen blank. It sucked but I turned a cool pen with it.

Two Rhino commands you should check out. Extract UV should give you the flat pattern from a curved surface. The other command is slash, it allows you to adjust iso curves to better follow the surface.

Thanks Im not a Rhino user but it's available in Blender. This is what's needed probably to do hydroforming.

I never would have purchased this knife because of the orange scales. Even though I’ve been repeatedly inspired by you to attempt CAD I have not been able to really figure it out. Looking forward to printing the files you’ve made though, your stuff is always top notch. Thanks for the video, I’ll be on the lookout for this knife on my Wally World trips now.

I understand that knife steel is an incredibly complicated topic...but be very careful using superlatives like "D2 is the BEST" this is far from the truth.. HOWEVER, it is remarkable to be found in a $10 knife.

I agree 100%. I misspoke in the video. I would change that line if I could.
@cmtravis13Ай бұрын
@@DesignPrototypeTest Well maybe D2 steel is "best" for you and your application. Most of my knives are D2 and for me it is the best steel for me. I also favor 154CM as well but those tend to be out of my price range.

@@DesignPrototypeTest No you didn't D2 is great steel the real issue is you just said they make things using slave labor. The YT have knifes made there and sell them for top dollar to people.

This is a good video. Id seen one thumbnail on a video comparing to a Bench Made. Ozark Trail made another thing that is really good. It's an inflatable stadium cushion. The material it was made from was a really resilient plastic. I wanted to see them make a full sleeping mat. I've owned two "high quality" 60-80$ inflatable camping pads and both of them leaked. If Ozark Trail would make an inflatable sleeping pad with the same material and design as they're stadium seat it would be the ultimate low cost, light weight, compact, and durable mattress.

you beat me to the punch by a week! i was just about to throw those scales into Fusion 360 and sketch up the first scales for this knife on the Internet... until i checked thingiverse and found your post. also, great design! I've been using fusion 360 as a CAD starter platform... one day I'll jump ship into Freecad to be unburdened by corporate interests... anyway, watching your workflow in Rhino really twisted my brain up - it took me a year and a half to wrap my head around the process of parametric modeling from scratch. it was very interesting to see such a fundamentally different approach to CAD modeling.

Have you seen the Nathan Builds Robots video on what carbon fiber filament does to your hands?
@DesignPrototypeTest2 ай бұрын
Yes. The horror show is only because of the magnification. Those tiny slivers can't penetrate that deeply into your skin. As someone who has worked construction for a living and destroyed his body before I'm not very concerned.

Calling D2 the best steel for knives is close to a crime. D2 is at best mediocre, at the very least since 1990. Even in its cpm variant it is not something I'd recommend. If you are looking for the "best" steel right now you should take a look at magnacut and Larrin Thomas in general.
@patrickriarchy6054Ай бұрын
Depends on what you want your knife to do. I've seen people shatter their Magnacut blade Spyderco's by dropping them accidentally from waist height. For edge retention Magnacut is currently the best there is. For durability not so much.
@joelamaro4525Ай бұрын
Magnacut would not be my steel of choice. 4V and k390 to name a few I would take over magnacut especially for the price. Especially if I were gong for a good budget knife. And D2, cpm D2, and 14c28n are perfectly fine budget knives and will function and perform adequately enough for most daily tasks like processing cardboard and opening packages.
@Tim54331Ай бұрын
I prefer 14C28N for my EDC.
@chatroux3992 ай бұрын
D2 Steel has only 1,4 - 1,6 % of carbon, so it's just a regular cheap stainless steel. But really interesting video as always, if I were you, I would try a deep engraving in a 3d printed plastic part.
@southside1975Ай бұрын
D2 is great steel it's not supper steel I have almost all of the supper steels and you need very expensive sharpening set if you use your knifes like me. I use D2 all the time does great if blade geometry is right just like all other steels.

Dude! I am 100% on your side. I want to make this stuff all day everyday. Look at the view count. It's been a week and it's got a thousand views. A month ago I got 200,000 views. The system is rigged. This isn't some impersonal algorithm. There human beings doing this to punish me. So you want me to stay silent about the Injustice? It doesn't matter anyway because you won't even see this to respond to it. KZbin has 112,000 employees. Telegram has 30 employees what do 111,970 people do at KZbin? Why doesn't KZbin? Let me click on a user and see their comment history? I can't keep making content like this if I don't get rewarded with views. They are trying to kill my channel. So you want me to keep providing the value that I want to keep providing but when I cry foul you want me to shut up?

I Just watched it while eating my dinner and i was thoroughly engrossed, particularly by the rhino cad sections as im a long time NX/CREO/Solid Edge user and its a great insight to the other side of CAD its funny because just this week i have been researching benchtop lasers and benchtop waterjet cutters for our lab in work! i want to cut thin steel and aluminium sheet though.

@@DesignPrototypeTest Your competitors Like Teaching Tech, CNC kitchen, Thomas Sanladerer, etc... they grind and pump out quality videos at a high cadence. Your ability/technical expertise is roughly about the same as theirs but you do not grind, you pump out one decent video whenever you feel like it and you expect their level of success.

I just purchased 2 of these knives at my local Walmart and found your video searching for replacement scales. Makes me want to get a 3d printer and laser cutter. Going to need to do some research. Perhaps you could make scales with a reversible pocket clip to be able to attach the clip on either side. Just a suggestion.

Blade shape and edge geometry Watch it some of the big KZbinRS will get very upset if you talk about slave labor in China. I said that and boy did they come out defending knifes made there. Then soon after they had knifes drop selling for over 300$ then I figured out why they got so upset.

I just act like the comedian (from Watchmen). Call a spade a spade but don't do anything about it. Keep living my life. Unfortunately, my morality ends at pointing out the truth. I still bought the knife. I still made the video selling more of them. In my defense, I'm not certain that any type of slavery was involved, but how could it not be when the thing costs $10?
