NOTE: I discovered that it just won’t be possible to finish and paint this piece in my basement due to various issues such as dust and fumes, so I’m going to have to call it finished at this point.
In this project I will be 3D printing and painting a life-size Jabba the Hutt statue. The other parts of the series are here:
Part 1: • 3D Printing a Life Siz...
Part 2: • 3D Printing a Life Siz...
Part 3: • 3D Printing a Life Siz...
You can download the model for free from Thingiverse and Cults:

The filament is being provided by MakerGeeks, who have also given my viewers a 15% off coupon. Just click the affiliate link below and enter JABBA at checkout to get the discount. [They are now out of business!]

I’ve addressed this a number of times elsewhere, but let me add it to the comments as well. Unfortunately I won’t be able to completely finish and paint this piece due to it being stuck in my basement. The dust from sanding and the fumes from body filler will be too much for me without ventilation, and more importantly they will get into the rest of the house. While it would be possible to paint it without filling the gaps, I think it would look worse than it does now in white. So I have decided to stop at this point. Sorry if that is anticlimactic.

It's hard to believe that much time has passed. Unfortunately I don't think the final stage of this project is going to be happening -- at least not soon. There have been various changes in my life that make it difficult to get enough free time to projects like this, and I also seem to have developed an allergy to the epoxy glue that I used when putting this together, which makes me very wary of using toxic things like that and Bondo in great quantities. I know it's disappointing, but I do want to try and finish up my R2-D2 project at the very least.
@chrishechtl8330
@chrishechtl8330 4 жыл бұрын
Oh! You mentioned problems with the bondo and glue causing allergies, I just remembered, you could use a 3D pen and or hot knife to weld parts together. The 3D pen is great to fill in seams. Use the hot knife to blend them in. Or heat the part with a heat gun or the knife and then weld them together that way, though you do have to be concerned about that method warping or damaging the part. You can also use the 3D pen and other techniques to add support material on the inside of the shell. Runners, or truss segments, or tack in a foam shell. Hmm, pity you couldn't coat him in liquid latex for the real flesh effect!

I would love to have a life sized Jabba, but I don't have the room. I will be printing a small Jabba on my QIDI Tech Shadow 5.5s resin printer pretty soon. I'm doing an R5D4 at 65% life size, which is as big as I could get it on my printer until I learn to chop up projects like you did with this one, but I'm also upgrading to a larger format printer soon too. But I still can't do a life sized Jabba or I'll have to put a door in him & use him as a house! LOL!

Very cool! I would suggest internal supports, gussets and such in a future large scale model. That and the pins you mentioned. Having the gussets and such might have made your original plan to keep it in sections more viable.Was warping a problem? I'm running into that with my S4 as well as my Da Vinci printers. I agree, printing slower gives you better layer adhesion but it is incredibly time consuming!As to finishing, I can't wait to see the finished project! I suggest putting a box fan in a window for ventilation. Also, if you use spray paints, you can get primer-filler spray. I am using it on my R2-D2 now and I've used it on other projects.If you do use cans I suggest getting one of those handles that slips on the cap. It makes it soooo much easier on your hands to use!You can also use an air brush to do fine detail. They are pretty easy to get and use these days. :)An alternative to going straight to paint after body filler is to coat the body in tinted or untinted liquid latex monster makeup. A skim coat would work and give him a rubbery flesh appearance. You can paint that with a 1/3rd mix of distilled water, latex, and latex house paint. (check youtube monster makeup for that) I'm trying to use that technique to make another project. According to the manufacturer (I called them) it can stand up to a lot of weather and abuse.(My animatronic project is supposed to be outdoors, but in SOCAL) Given your guy is going to be in a basement, I doubt that would be a problem.Curious, are you going to build a base for him? And paint a set? Maybe print props from his throne room? Paint the floor to look like the rancor trap door? Sound FX chip? Threepio and others with your printers? lol

@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 5 жыл бұрын
Could be, although it’s not uniform so it would be hard to compensate for it in the settings. At least some of it is just due to small errors in positioning the pieces while glue that get magnified when you’re gluing dozens of pieces
@mrfochs
@mrfochs 5 жыл бұрын
While likely too late now, it would have really improved the strength of the overall piece if you placed some fiberglass matting and resin over the seams from the inside of each section before closing it up. This would have both secured the gaps you had, and could have allowed for fiberglassing in some support rods (just wood dowels) to give each section support and allow for disassembly. Nonetheless, great work on this project and bravo for the dedication to print all that.
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 5 жыл бұрын
You're right, but frankly that's a bit beyond me, and probably overkill for something that would just sit in my basement. But if I was going to be trying to transport it to events or something that would be a good way to go.

@zennozangetsu1164 5 жыл бұрын

It's very hard to say at this point. There's more to it than just the print time, and of course there are print failures and so forth as well. Well that would be a good idea in theory, but I am not a good enough designer to pull that off at this scale. There are a lot of things that could certainly be done better, but this was sort of a proof of concept

@@MightyJabbasCollection any idea about how much? This is hollow right?
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 2 жыл бұрын
Hollow, yes. It’s been quite a while since I did it, but I think it was 30-40 kilograms of filament so multiply that by the price of your filament. You might be able to find it for as low as $10 a kilogram

You probably could have saved a bit of time and materials by buying premade plastic sheets for the flat bottom or just leaving it open under jaba.

I considered leaving it open, but it seemed like the parts on the bottom actually really helped reinforce the overall structure.

I don't know how you have the money to pay for this stuff, I make close to 100k a year and I still don't have the money for this sort of collecting. Very neat looking Jabba.

I don't really spend all that much on my collection, at least on a month-to-month basis. Most of what I cover on the channel has been accumulated over a decade. And almost all of the printers were sent to the channel for free for me to review

For half the filament money, I would print the Olsen sisters instead... Just personal preference.
