Awesome glad the shell is working out! When we did E.T. this method was great with just a little assembly difficulty. On his head we recut it and let mesh mixer fill in the hole. This gave us the outside shape with interior walls but no infill. Really impressed with the progress! Going to be an awesome result!

Yes, come to think of it your ET was one of the first examples I saw of this approach, although you didn't use the shell approach (not really necessary for something ET's size).

Seams could be reinforced with hot glue. You will need 100+ watt gluegun, and lots of sticks. Than, "draw" with glue along all seams, on inside of the model, with line about 1-2cm wide and 4+ mm thick. It will join parts together really tightly, and, because of elastic nature of hot glue. It will hold together pretty good, because all stress applied to model, will be relaxed in this glue seams, and they wouldn't craced as ca glue or epoxy.

glue the left side of the head thats fitting well now, then when its dry use a ratchet strap (or two) wrapped around the head to pull the seam/gap closed, thats how i would do it. you might have to put a piece of board or something under the strap against the face to pull it at the correct angle

You could do that but I’m not sure I’m up to modifying a such complex model that way. I do plan to design some sort of brackets separately that I can add inside, since I need to be able to disassemble it if I need to move it at some point.

It was from Build It And They Will Come, which is a subscription service for Star Wars-related STLs. You’d have to join and also purchase that file separately. Is there any particular reason you're not using some kind of interlocking pin/hole kinda system to align and join the pieces?

Well, that would require editing all of the pieces, and the shells are kind of too thin to make that easy as well. I do plan to build him in several sections so he can be transported, and I will be adding add some brackets of some kind with strong magnets to align those sections
@zerocharistmas50746 жыл бұрын

9:22 LOL - when you showed the 0.4mm nozzle and then showed the next nozzle, my immediate thought was “1mm” so I was surprised when you said 0.8mm and then I chuckled when you revealed it actually was a 1mm nozzle. Too many years spent in a workshop. Pupils would bring me something that had to be covered or whatever and I’d ask them what size and they’d not know. With one look I’d estimate it to within a couple of millimetres, or swap easily between metric and imperial measurements. Awesome project. I saw this “jigsaw” style method of printing parts to be put together to form a larger item but never to this scale!

@MightyJabbasCollection6 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on how much you think “low cost” is, and what you want to do with it. The CR-10 is a good machine for not too much money and has enough build volume to do most projects. But there are cheaper ones too.

@malcy11116 жыл бұрын
Brilliant! Looking forward to your next episode on this one. Question: Do you have to hollow the model if you are going to select a single wall thickness anyway? I noticed you set a 0.5mm shell thickness before you scaled the model. What did the final model end up with - because you were intending on using a 0.8 nozzle with single wall thickness?
@MightyJabbasCollection6 жыл бұрын
This is a little hard to explain, but the single wall thickness refers to the walls of the shell. Since I hollowed it out, I was left with a shells that had two walls about 1cm apart with infill between them. If you didn’t hollow it out first and selected a single wall for the outer shell it would be pretty flimsy
@malcy11116 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. That makes good sense. Nice. (I was wondering how you ended up with such thick surfaces on the joins when you were going to print with only a single wall.
@JaredSloger6 жыл бұрын
What are your thoughts on Jabba's tail? I've seen a couple versions in the seated position where it's shorter as in this model and others where it's much longer and tapers off in order to coil back around. I'm personally a fan of the longer tail but what's your preference?
@MightyJabbasCollection6 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't think it should literally be able to coil like a snake's tail, but I do think it could be thinner and longer than it is on this model. I do kind of wish I had paid a bit more attention to the overall proportions when I was working with Josh to design it, but it looked good in isolation and I only noticed that the head portion seemed a bit oversized when I compared it to the Sideshow figure. But as I mentioned in the video, it's not really realistic to try and have everything be a perfect replica of the actual Jabba (and even officially licensed figures and statues have been much worse than this one)
@JaredSloger6 жыл бұрын
Having it being able to coil would require a lot of extra engineering and materials. But I was initially thinking a static position with a longer tail. There are so many interpretations of Jabba across the board so when it comes to other people's preferences it's neat to hear or see what they choose to go with. I think it's turning out great and it's been entertaining seeing the process of it all coming together. Thanks for sharing the process of this adventure!

just a shot in the dark here, but i'm guessing youre going to need some type of support structure for the body. i can only imagine as you build from tail to body, then head, if you don't have supports inside, the belly will blow out once the weight of the upper body/head goes on.
@MightyJabbasCollection6 жыл бұрын
We’ll see how it goes. The head is surprisingly sturdy, but I can always try adding some bracing inside if need be

It does look sturdy and from my experience printing larger pieces like this I would say that you definitely do not have to worry about supporting it more unless you are trying to move it around a lot. I am very excited to see this in full!
@demijebus68316 жыл бұрын
Support would definitely be recommended in the final peice. You could do this on the cheap by simply creating make shift I Beams from PVC pipe to run down the middle of the structure. It would be super light and make a great support for assembly. Glue some eva foam to the cross members to give the print something to grab onto and your golden. Super excited for this project.
