Getting nostalgic and emotional when "We Are" plays in the Anime. You are fully one of us now. As someone who's been watching/reading One Piece for 18 years (jesus...) at this point "We Are" is Toei's cheat code to get my teary eyed. I just know that one day when it's all over they're going to play it in one of the final scenes and I'll be bawling my eyes out.

I know some reactors skip the openings for spoiler reasons, which is fair because a lot of the openings do contain spoilers. But this opening has no real spoilers in it and it's just an awesome opening and the perfect way to kick off the arc. They also brought back the artist who sang "We Are" to perform it. Of course check with anyone you trust who's watched One Piece, but I'm sure they'll agree there's no spoilers in it.

i mean, its even crazier if you think about the fact that the strawhats at this point have only known each other for a few weeks to a few months! i mean, brook basically only just joined- thriller bark happened within one day/night, and then a few days recovery. luffy setting out on that tiny boat with a barrel on it i think in the canon timeline is like....3 months? 4? i read someone doing the maths once. and now theyre taking a TWO YEAR break!! thats so much longer than theyve known each other, and yet. their bond is strong enough that theyre all willing to do 2 years of hard ass work, just to be able to keep sailing together in the future. but i get why this blew your mind, when i first read that (it was just coming out) i was like "HUH???? When this episode first aired, I believe the One Piece anime took a 1 month break. In hindsight, the break should have been much longer, cause we've been plagued by pacing issues ever since. Still, even with the pacing issues, I'm certain that you'll continue to love One Piece, so I'm looking forward to more of your reactions (and the livestream).

There is no pacing issue with the anime. The only issue is the audience's lack of patience and understanding. Anyone with a working brain would know one very important fact that has been going on for years now and is THE MAIN REASON THE ANIME IS KEEPING THE SLOW PACING: ODA is NOT YOUNG ANYMORE. For this year alone, he has taken two months off. He releases a few chapters then takes a few weeks off to rest and focus on making sure the story doesn't drop. The anime allows Oda enough time to not only rest but also adds more scenes to every episode. It's mostly only Western fans that have a problem. Here in Japan, we understand.

For starters, how can you start by saying, "There is no pacing issue," in one sentence, only to then say, "The main reason the anime is keeping the slow pacing..." two sentences later. You've literally contradicted yourself. I'm not sure why you took my comment to be an attack on Oda or his work ethic. He's a super hard, dedicated, passionate worker who often pushes himself too hard. If it weren't for his editors, he'd be taking fewer breaks, so I'm happy to hear he's taken time off this year. The ones I'm criticizing are Toei and the One Piece production committee. The anime could have easily gone on hiatus to give the manga time to get further ahead without overworking the author (like Fairy Tail and Black Clover did). Alternatively, the anime could have created more filler arcs, like G8. Another option was animating more of the cover stories, or some of the light novels. Instead, we'll sometimes go weeks without advancing the story beyond a snails pace. This is a disservice to Oda and One Piece, but the anime makes too much money to stop. The same thing happens with Detective Conan. You are correct about the anime often adding to Oda's story by including new scenes. Sometimes, those scenes were prepared by Oda, who intentionally set things up in the manga to be elaborated on by the anime (like events that happened in the background). Other times, the scenes have nothing to do with Oda. If the writing is good, I have no issue either way, but the writing isn't always good (especially when Oda isn't involved). There is no denying that the anime has pacing issues. Sometimes, the episode starts with a really long recap. Sometimes, the episodes reuse clips of animation multiple times throughout the episode (especially in Dressrosa). Sometimes, we'll see the same flashbacks numerous times (like Naruto), even when those flashbacks weren't in the manga. Sometimes, entire minutes of an episode are wasted by throwing in repetitive time fillers (like the anime-only stare downs between 2 characters where the camera alternates between character and zooms in on their eyes). Sometimes, the anime drags out dramatic moments beyond the point of normalcy, which messes with the drama. Finally, I'm not sure why you had to make this into a Western vs. Japanese issue. I'm also not sure why my initial comment triggered you. However, I have to wonder... if you're right about pacing "not" being an issue, why are most popular animes seasonal now instead of weekly?

A fun fact if im not wrong the time the straw hats got separated by kuma till their reunion was for the manga September 8, 2008 to October 4, 2010 (2 years and shy of 1 month) and for the anime June 14, 2009 to October 2, 2011 (2 years and 4ish months) for the original JP releases. I think its so cool how he played with real time to make that reunion feel so much more like a reunion for everyone involved and i hope the one piece remake can emulate that somehow as well so anyone that missed it the first time around can get the real deep feel for distance and time it was.

Fun fact about the timeskip (no spoliers) - by the time the this arc concluded its was exactly 2 years in real time (September 2008 to September 2010) since the Strawhats were separated. So in a way readers waited for this reunion same amount of time as the characters.
