I have so much nostalgia for this device even though it never fully materialized. I loved, loved the 3DO back when I was 15 and I worked so hard and sold so much stuff just to obtain one. I read all the magazines and was so excited to hear about the M2, and the potential add on card or whatever other type of device that could have potentially enhanced my existing 3DO before that was scrapped and only the full unit was still in development. These days I always wondered what MK1 would have looked like on the OG 3DO, and what the M2 would have done to the industry had it been given a chance with the Saturn and PlayStation coming. So amazing to see you have this! I ordered one of those external ODE devices from your friend Fixel, and I can't wait to get it!

@8:59 - this reveal reminded me that I probably designed that board. It has a xilinx because it was a development board (red color also gives that away). It has been so long so I don't remember, but I guess we added additional buttons so that's why we couldn't use the custom silicon. Over the almost 2 years I was at 3do, I created a ton of xilinx based controller prototypes. The 3do controller protocol was a simple shift register that allowed creation of new controllers pretty easily.

The tech was so powerful and the demos looked insane, way above the Commodore Amgia and the Ps1, which were pretty much the graphics kings at that time. @@VideoGameEsoterica Word. I think with every new console beyond the Genesis Sega released hardware 1-2 years too early making it too weak and not giving developers enough time to make games for it. If Sega CD was released in late 93 as a stand alone unit with beefed up 32x hardware(4x SH2 with 2meg ram) and a cartridge slot for Genesis games it would have kicked Super Nintendo's ass. Games could have run on CD or cartridge or a combination using the cartridge as a ram expander. If I ran Sega I would have made a deal with Midway to get a Killer Instinct and MK2 port going. Both games would use a CD/ram cart combo to run the pre rendered stages in KI and Shang morphs in MK2.

I would be a bit cocky if I was the leading M2 expert on the planet (outside of the people who actually made the hardware)

@@VideoGameEsoterica Honestly I don't think I've ever played that. However I don't put past 3DO for having amazing great games. I mean Need For Speed was born on 3DO!

I thought the Polystars board had 4MB of RAM and all other Konami arcade games were 8MB. Wouldn't that mean an FZ-21 could run all the arcade games?
@VideoGameEsoterica2 жыл бұрын
No arcade is 8/16MB, which means that the 21 would only run Polystars and the 35 can theoretically run them all

An FPGA in a controller? Seems a bit overkill.

$4200.69? Don't know if that would even be appreciated in a Japanese auction

Haha probably not. But it would have made for an amusing video. I’m mostly here to entertain myself

Man, it's similar to the original 3DO, the graphics look cool, the games just feel clunky. No wonder they canned it.

I think you aren’t taking into account this beat everything on the market in 96 and these are first gen games

@@VideoGameEsoterica Idk, Tekken 2 came out on PS1 in 1996 and it was a great fighting game. It looked great, it felt great, doubt anyone would buy a whole new console for marginally better graphics and clunkier gameplay feel. Also FIFA may look worse on PS1, but they got the scale right. The soccer game shown in the video feels like a street soccer game because of how small the field is.

Man, haven't read or seen anything about the M2 in ages but I thought the graphics would be closer to the Dreamcast since this thing was AFAIL able to push as many polys as the Model 3 right? yet the games look PSX-tier, no wonder Panasonic pulled the plug.
