This is absolutely terrific instruction. Tried this today at practice and worked a treat. Once you get this set up correct you can be super aggressive going at the ball. Tried this set up with my 60 degree, 56 and gap wedge and all came out lovely, high and soft.

great tip. I took it straight to the golf course and managed to get out of the bunker 4 out of 4 times with a lot higher ball flight than I'm used to and softer landing. the different release motion has completely transformed the impact for me.

loved the lesson changed my mindset on bunker shots it is a left hand (for right golfers) specialty shot with the lead arm slowing to be over taken by an active cupping of the left wrist great lesson I have not heard it explained that way before and it has helped me tremendously thank you Chris

Hi Michael, glad you enjoyed the video, I would say the shot it more controlled with the trail arm swinging and releasing the club head through the ball 👍

Hi Chris, Your explanations are wonderful and insights the best. I sometimes question your wording or verbosity as they can scramble my brain and I end up missing the forest for the trees. Here is an example. Please correct me if I am wrong. I love your three keys for getting out of the bunker- (1) getting club face rotated open at address (approx 45 degrees) in order to properly interact the sand with the traling edge, (2) getting a correct release with club head passing hands thourgh impact i.e. left wrist in a cupped position though impact that causes club head to overtake/pass the hands. To do this you need to create a quick wrist set on backswing so the lead wrist goes into an exrtended/cupped position though impact. (3) Getting a correct Set up-by having the entry point into the sand below the sternum just before the front heel etc No weight shift on back swing. All excellent points. Thank you. So once you have club face and set up correct all you have to worry about is point number (2)- getting a correct release so the club head passes through the hands at impact. At no time do you use the word flip. Why is that? Is that not in effect a flip. If so, just think flip after 1 and 3 are implemented. Is that a correct way to think about it? Flip flip flip? Is there a reason you are reluctant to use the word flip? Sincerely, harold

Very different to my normal bunker shot, with only a 40% success rate out of bunkers. I have practiced your approach, 3 X 30 mins sessions on the practice area to use your approach, it's working. I played 18 holes today, hit bunkers 4 times, with your approach 100% success out of bunkers, the sand was heavy and damp. Need to practice more to dial in the distance, I get high loft, superb spin and 12 foot of carry, need to vary the back swing for distance

If you keep the palm of the left hand facing the ground on the way through, you will get to engage the bounce and promote a shallow angle of attack.

Are these keys the same with compacted sand or little sand in the bunker?
@DownUnderOzzy8 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, Great video once again.I had a wet sand bunker shot and I was concerned the bounce would not get under the sand. I played a more closed face shot (more like a chip) and it came out ok although it released more as would be expected. Can I play a hard sand shot with an open face too?
@jimlafrance95468 жыл бұрын
Chris - 2 questions: no mention of where you enter sand, so presumably the wrist flip results in contact behind ball rather than at normal sternum at ball low point? You hit this 12 yards - how do you vary length of shot? What is range for your 59 vs 56? And how do you tweak each further/shorter? And how with this set up do you chunk and run versus fly it to hole?

One thought how do you set up when the sand is damp ?
@markkirk30497 жыл бұрын
Chris, how would you modify your bunker shot, when the ball is plugged and the ball is below the level of the sand? I used your approach yesterday, I almost got out of the bunker, using a 50 degree wedge,.
@wordofmo7 жыл бұрын
Mark, I have luck with fried eggs or buried balls in the sand by closing down the club face and hitting very steeply down just behind the ball. You get very little spin so you have to judge your distance appropriately.

What about a fourth key- a shallow swing plane (more around than up and down) not a steep swing plane with a vertical shaft at top?

Wait. Phil Mickelson promotes hinge and hold in the bunker, with hands always leading thru impact ahead of the club and a high finish. Chris' technique makes senses too but it's quite the opposite. Which one is more consistent and safer for higher handicapped players?
@ZeroSumJ19 жыл бұрын
Chris, do you still get nervous when you're setting up over a bunker shot? I feel like I know the mechanics and what I'm supposed to do, but that nervousness is what ruins it for me when things go wrong.
