Rob Zahabi from Rides by Kam shares custom car building tips for perfecting body lines using filler.
Step 1: Put filler down on the panel (00:30)
Put filler down from one end of the panel to the other so you can fine-tune it with your sanding processes and sharpen the body lines. We always use 3M™ Platinum™ Select Filler 31131, which has fewer pinholes and is much easier to sand.
Step 2: Lay tape along one edge (01:07)
Start with one side of the body line and back-mask off the leading edge. Put your filler down and pull the tape off to expose a nice sharp edge. Sand it down, then back-mask and fill the opposite way to the line again.
Pro tip (02:01)
Before using the 3M filler, you would have to start sanding with a 40-grit sandpaper. But with the 3M filler, you can start with an 80-grit sandpaper, sometimes even 120 grit. And the 3M™ Cubitron™ II Hookit™ Clean Sanding Sheet Rolls have such a good cut they reduce sanding time by half.
Step 3: Sand the filler (02:21)
With the 80-grit 3M™ Cubitron™ II Hookit™ Clean Sanding Sheet Roll, sand away the lines from the applicator and knock the filler down to one level, then apply a dry guide coat. Repeat the process with 120 grit, then with 180 grit, and finally with 240 grit, which will be ready for the paint stage.
Important note:
There are of course many factors and variables that can affect an individual repair, so the technician and repair facility need to evaluate each specific application and repair process, including relevant vehicle, part and OEM guidelines, and determine what is appropriate for that repair.
