Had an '85 with the 22R carbureted engine in it years ago. Drove it 200k miles, and then dropped a rebuilt engine and transmission in it. Drove it another 100k miles. Sold it to a young Marine. He called me out of the blue three years later and was still driving it. Most reliable truck I have ever owned. Wish I had never gotten rid of it.

My father had an auto service center back in the 80's and was a die hard GMC fan. As these trucks became more popular we had more and more of them coming into the shop but the only thing we every did on them was general maintenance. I can't recall ever having to actually replace anything on one of these trucks. My father was so impressed that he finally broke down and purchased one for himself as his everyday driver and hunting truck. He drove that truck for 12 years and put over 400K miles on it. He purchased a new one and sold his old one to a neighbor down the street. That guy drove the truck for years and eventually gave it to his son to drive when he turned 16. They gave it a new paint job and did a basic engine rebuild and that guys son still owns and drives that truck today. It had the 22R in it and I do remember changing the head gasket a few times but other than that and a few other wear items over the years it was rock solid.

AMEN! I am SOOO tired of being offered garbage products from so many manufacturers these days. It is disgusting to me that a business would be ok with selling something that is designed to be replaced because it costs too much in time and resources to maintain it. A vehicle should outlast its owner with standard maintenance. I want a simple, no frills vehicle that doesn't spazz out when a wire bundle gets rubbed the wrong way. Great video, thank you. Chicken tax…as I understand it, that’s why we don’t have light duty pickup trucks in the US anymore. They stopped importing them in the 1990’s. I’ve owned the 1990’s version of this Toyota Pickup for 17yrs & I agree…the head gasket & timing chain guide are their Achilles heel. To combat these problems, I run a 180 deg (instead of the oem 190-192 deg thermo) thermostat so the truck runs cooler than normal & have a metal timing chain guide…both of those things will lessen the aforementioned issues. My truck is quick & gets 17.5-21mpg.

I lived in Southern California and they wanted it to be pass a smog check better than a new truck and in 2014 I just didn’t have the money to get it running right again so that is why I sold it off. Thanks for sharing

Nailed it as usual Chad!! Wish Toyota would bring back this classic little truck with small footprint. Enjoying your hats, would love to see them made in USA.

Ive still got my 1988 Toyota 4Runner that was built on this truck platform and I LOVE HER. My 4Runner is Black w/Silver stripes SR5 automatic 4-spd. She has the 3.0L V6 and the original alternator lasted 27yrs, finally replaced it in 2015. The a/c still works great & my girlfriend/now wife bought an Alpine CD deck for her 10th birthday back in 1998 & it still looks/works great. I bought my 4Runner back in 1994 for $6500 cash. I call her my "Mountain Goat", my Urban Assault Vehicle because she's so tough and will go anywhere without a complaint and I always feel safe and comfortable in her. I love how good she drives, how she sits with the rear higher than the front end and how solid she still feels at 36yrs old with 200k miles. Even tho I'm a Chevy Man, I always tell my 4Runner that shes the best truck ever.

I had both an 86 and 89. Yep... Those things would run forever. I drove the second one, literally all over the country. Only bad thing about them was that those bumpers were like a beer can. But everybody I knew replaced theirs with those big steel tube bumpers. I did delivery for the studios for 6 years when I was a kid, and this was the go-to truck, and also for musicians. And yeah, the head gasket is what got the 89.

92 year model with the 22re was my first truck. Got it with 220k miles on it, now pushing 400k. It sat for about 8 years under a shade tree on the parents farm after high school. Decided to rebuild it, showed up changed the oil, put a new battery on it, and bug bombed it, drove it 3hrs home the next day

I had an 84SR5 I loved it. I lived very close to the coast. The rear quarter panels were rusting about 4 yrs in. I always kept it clean and waxed.

Toyota mechanic here, we used to put aftermarket steel timing chain guides in them when repairing them, the plastic guides were fine till you get slop in the chain, then it mixes oil with coolant to destroy the engine. In the 1990s to early 2000s Toyota had these vehicles mastered, they could not get better.

Had an ‘88 with over 215,000 when I gave it to a family member, did frequent and regular oil changes. The only repair work that was ever needed was a new water pump and a new battery. Amazing truck, wish I still had it!! Appreciate all that 3 of 7 represents. 🙏🏼👊🏼

Grandad had one in a field that had trees growing into it. Changed some belts, wires, and a new battery. Started and ran for a few years as a farm vehicle.

Had my first Toyo Tacoma for 10 years, inline 4, 2005, got T-boned and totaled. On my 2nd Toyo Tacoma, V-6 2015, 9 years now, can't be them absolutely NO mechanical issues with either vehicle. Wife has a Toyo Camry, all excellent vehicles.

I'm an NC native and I have a 1989 Toyota Pickup, bought it for 6k in 2014-2015 with 165k miles on it very clean truck. It just clicked over to 320k miles the other day and all I have replaced is the head gasket once along with routine oil changes. it is stock as well 5 speed. Taken it to the mountains many times hunting and SC hunting as well. The old saying is true... They just don't make 'em like they use to.

My Paw Paw owned an early '90's model Toyota truck and it is what I learned to drive a straight-drive in!! I have a lot of memories going dog hunting in it as well!! Good times that we thought would never end!!!

I've always heard good things about the 22R motor, but have never owned a Toyota. As chance would have it, I owned two Nissan hard bodies, around the same year model as Blake's. One was a 5 speed regular cab with a 4 cylinder motor with 2 spark plugs per cylinder. The truck was hit hard in the front when bought, and needed a front clip. Turned out very nice, and drove great. After driving it for a while, I sold it to a friend. She promptly tore it up. The second hard body was another 4 banger extra cab, which was a roll over. After a new cab, this truck also was a great truck, that I drove for a couple of years. Were these Nissans as good, or better, than Toyotas, I dont know. But they were trouble free, little tanks, for me. Nice Toyota review Chad.

My dad bought a 1994 double cab 4x4 Hilux with the 2.2 liter petrol. We had it over 20 years. Never missed a beat. I took it over but then eventually sold it. I still regret selling it. SOLID vehicles

My Dad had a 1985 toyo, loved that truck he bought it new. When he died in 1995 he left it to my brother, he didn't take cate of it like it needed but it still lasted till 2010 motor was still good when he scraped it.

2 quick ones. My brother had an old 82 model. We were down at a place called the ruts, running around, slinging mud, going through big mud holes. We came to one, my brother asked "how deep you think that is?" I said maybe halfway up the wheel. He drove off in her amd it was over the hood. She didn't miss a beat, just kept right on plugging along and pulled out the other side. And that was the old carb engine. Some years later, working at a flooring mill, had a buddy that had one. His motor was about shot. So he ordered a new one. The old leaked like a strainer so he decided to see how long it would run off water. 3 weeks was the answer!

Picked up an 85 with 49000miles 3 years ago that had been rolled and totaled out35 years ago. Was sitting in a barn all these years. We installed nice rust free 86 cab and resurrected a classic.

I have a 2016 Tacoma and I have made it into my bugout truck. I have added a few improvements and a EMP shield. I didn’t lift it up to high and I replaced a lot of the plastic parts. It’s an amazing truck. I had a 91 Tacoma but I hit a deer with it and was a complete loss. When she died she had 279k and not a leak or a issue.

I had a 1998 Jeep wrangler w a 2.5 4 cyc. I drove it 232,000 w no problems. It got 22mpg. And didn’t leak anything or burn oil. What finally took her down was a cracked piston skirt. For 17 years she was a hard charger. I luv in N Georgia and it would go thru snow and ice and not slip. How I miss it!!

I'm the proud owner of a 1993 4Runner with a newly rebuilt 22re 5 speed. Its got 296k original miles and only 16k on the new 22re. It's my daily driver/work truck and its the best vehicle I've ever owned. Theres no trip I wouldn't take it on. I do wish it was a bit faster and I may turbo it one day. New ARB suspension is going in this fall and I cant wait to do some crawling.

I really miss my little 95 Toyota Tercel, a manual two-door. It was so light that half the mileage was gliding without the gas pedal. Someone side-swiped the right quarter panel and it took the hit like a champ. Never got it fixed. Ran perfect. Cheap gas, cheap insurance, and fit my tall frame surprisingly well.

I had an 86 or 87. Can't remember. Ran it under a semi trailer(actually a cotton bale trailer) at about 60mph in south GA coming back from our family farm. Lucky to be alive. My brother begged me to go, so glad I didn't let him. It would have taken his head off. My dad still has the truck. Bought it from me so I could put a down payment on a new Jeep. Sitting in the back yard. He refuses to sell it. Has privately said he keeps it to remind him of how blessed his family is... dang I miss that truck. All I ever wanted. Had to do a head job on it in college.

I had and 84 and an 85. Both had carburetors and front straight axels. They were good trucks. I took mine hunting and wood cutting. My 85 was a long bed 84 was a short bed. My Jeeps have actually held up just as good as my Toyotas did. I take good care of my vehicles.

My first truck was a 1984 Toyota 4x4. Extra cab, straight axle, had a 1985 22re motor (fuel injection) bought it with 244,000 miles. Back in 1999. When I would get it stuck. I would shift from reverse to drive, in 4low. Without taking my foot off the gas. It was to the floor board. Never slip or jump, just went back and forth, into gear. I did break the frame. Re-welded it in shop class. Great first truck for a 15/16yr old. Also my timing chain guides did fail. Around $550 bucks to fix it, 1999 money.
