3rd Gen 4runner key stuck in ignition

You can just eliminate the entire lockout system by removing 2 screws and the selonoid on the ignition itself. I replaced ignition, shifter bushings, was pulling my hair out. Just remove the solenoid that locks the key off the ignition.

it took less than 5 minutes to do this and it was exactly the issue with my '00 w/260k.. it was full of gunk and old dry grease.. cleaned, lubed, and now perfect 👍

Thank you! We just fixed this exact problem and had the lose left to right issue, which had* to be fixed in order for the pin not to slip. We had to remove the 3 brass tiny screws from the white piece of on the right of shifter and lift it up slightly so the bolt could come out. Thanks again!

Great help! I added a washer to the driver side of the pin like you said and it fixed my problem. Too much slack due to the plastic spacers wearing out. I could see the plastic shavings and bits from the last 22 years inside the cover

I am no expert and I don’t pretend to be one, but I hope this may help someone with a key extraction problem. I have a 2000 4 runner. I understand the switches a little. If you have slack in the shifter, STOP. Order a set of bushings and change that first. On mine I needed 4. It solved my problem and it shifts like a brand new vehicle. Now there is no slack and the switches work perfectly because they no when to close to complete a circuit. Trust me on this. If there is slop in the shifter, it throws everything off. @@Mustardseed777 Ma’am, there are many u - tube videos out that can pretty much walk you through it if you are handy with hand tools. The shift linkage must be disconnected from underneath but it’s no big deal. I suppose any good repair shop should be able to do it with no problem. As far as what it would cost, I really have no idea. Good luck to you and God bless.

My son NEVER has a problem but every time I drive our 2000 4 runner the key sticks ….would this work?

Next time it sticks, wiggle the shifter around in park while trying to pull the key out. If wiggling works this will work for you.
