I followed the procedure and succeeded in getting the internet light up on my router, but oddly didn't get a connection, so I tried unselecting the Vlan option altogether (in the WAN section in my router) and that worked OK for me. Maybe The Vlan setting changes from region to region. I'll stick with Vodafone's router, it's faster than my old Asus dsl ac55u, but now I know the Asus dsl hub can work with fttp as a router, I'll hang on to it just for trouble shooting and emergency backup in case the Vodafone hub ever packs up. I don't use the landline phone but the additional ports from the THG3000 come in handy, freeing up the 2.4Ghz ports for more superior devices. Now to test this router with the Quest 3 VR headset!

I tried & failed: but what I did find was that adding the old Wireless network ID & password to my new router, worked a treat! Happy days again - without having to add nearly 20+ wireless connections one by one.

Many thanks for this excellent video! I am so close to getting this working but something is clashing when I have the Vodafone router connected to the Asus router. I wonder if this is a DHCP clash. At 18:12 into the video, are the DHCPv4 Start and End pool numbers outside the pool defined on the Asus router, the same as the Asus router or something different? Many thanks in advance

Unless you intend to use Digital Voice, there is no need to use the VF router, any PPPoE capable router with a WAN port (virtually every one on the market) will suffice.

Since many would prefer to avoid this faff and save space, I guess, for now, if you want to keep your land line, you are pretty much tied to sticking with the ISP supplied router. I wonder whether in time 3rd party modem-routers will come with phone ports?

It seems very few 3rd party routers use phone ports. I suspect each vendor router has some customised firmware to route phone calls through vodafone servers. I did see a couple of very expensive routers with phone ports but setting them up was complicated as assumed knowledge beyond "mere mortals".

Just wanted to say thanks for this upload even after all this time. I've just moved over to Vodafone pro 2 package and the Ultra hub WiFi is nothing short of shocking with constant buffering on all devices when watching Netflix or KZbin etc. Also cameras connected via WiFi barely if at all work. So I searched KZbin and found your video and redeployed my Netgear R7800 that I had with my previous Virgin Media setup. I followed most of what you said and I think more by luck than judgement I've managed to get this up and running. The only bugbear I have as my 900mb speeds seem to be choking on WiFi at around the 250mb up and down and via ethernet around 400 down and 600 up so I'm wondering if something in either router is restricting this. Anyway just to say that this has saved a lot of aggro as I was about to cancel my contract while in my 14 day cooling off period for sure but this work around may change my mind depending on whether I can get my speeds up, and the added bonus of keeping my home phone. What infrastructure are you using cityfibre or Openreach fttp I am using Openreach and I didn't have to enable the vlan I had to disable it as it would not connect with it enabled think that is only requirement on City fibre one other thing you do not need to use PPPoE only ASUS router if you are using the Vodafone router and on the Asus router can set the WAN connection type to automatic IP and it will work would recommend restarting router both of them

I am using City firbe so have to use the vlan option, but before I was using openreach and was more simple as did not need to worry about vlan setup on the asus router.

Sorry in advance if this has been asked and answered. I have this Vodafone broadband hub and just bought the Asus ax82u modem router. I was hoping to use the new device and have it connected directly to the ONT for my fiber broadband. Ive tried a few different setting configurations on my Asus device, but always get a red internet light and cannot get a connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, this might be a dumb question because I’m still wrapping my head around all this networking stuff. I have just bought 2 Amplifi Alien routers and planned to use the Vodafone router as a modem only. Unfortunately the VF router does not support bridge only / modem mode. In this video though you seem to be able to just remove it from the equation altogether. I was under the assumption a modem would still be needed. Does your router have one built in? Or can I skip the modem altogether. Sorry if this is dumb Edit - potentially have answered myself. Appears fibre ONTs have a modem so should be able to connect directly to a router?

nice tutorial. Just to confirm, will all the devices on the asus wifi be given IP addresses in 192.168.52.* ? As when I set this up the asus wifi router sets everything as 192.168.53.* to avoid any conflicts? What are your devices numbers under "view List" in asus client list?

One thing I'm not sure of after watching the video - is the connection from the ONT to the WAN port on the Vodafone hub, then from one of the LAN ports on the Vodafone hub to the WAN port on the Asus router?

Yes that is correct, my setup is ONT > WAN Port on Vodafone Router > (then seperate cable) LAN Port on Vodafone Router > WAN Port on Asus Router

I replaced my Voda hub with a dedicated Draytek modem and a TP router (and ASUS mesh for WiFi). For some reason it was never as fast as the hub, but I wanted to avoid any NAT issues. Unfortunately we need to use the phone (VOIP) function and will have to switch back to the hub. A couple of things is noticed in this video - why did you not disable the DCHP on the Voda hub? Having 2 running isn’t ideal. Also, what Ethernet port to use on the hub? The WAN or LAN? They work slightly differently on different devices.

Handy guide, but just to clarify if using the double NAT option as long as the static IP address is set you don't need to bother with the other local network settings? and I assume that the Vodafone hub is still directly connected to the ONT as opposed to the third party router?

Internet speed will be the same, but the main benefit will be if you have 900mbps connection then you will get this speed around your house instead of just near the vodafone router.

Just thinking about avoiding double NAT configurations and retaining Vodafone's Digital Voice capability. Would it be possible to connect the Asus router directly to the ONT with the PPPoE/Login/Password setup and connect the Vodafone router to the LAN port of the Asus router just to be able to connect an analogue phone to the Vodafone's router phone port? Perhaps some ports might need to be forwarded, or am I missing something (possibly?)

Good information. Finally found someone who created a video and discussed using a third-party router with a Vodafone hub I only switched to Vodafone with fiber a few weeks ago. I disabled all wifi on the Vodafone hub and simply connected my ASUS wifi router to one of the LAN ports on the Vodafone hub. All of my home devices were able to connect to the internet via WiFi or wired from my Asus wifi router. So my question is, what will I miss if I do not follow the setup steps in your video?

A great series of videos. I am looking to leave BT in a month or two as their pricing has become too much. I am looking at Vodafone's Full Fibre 900 offerings and retaining my landline as I am currently on BT's FTTP 500 offering with Digital Voice. Am i correct in assuming that Vodafone's FTTP solution would play happily with the ASUS ZenWiFi Pro ET12 AiMesh system, provided of course that I retain the Vodafone hub for DV access?

Unless you have setup specific setting on the Vodafone router (e.g. mac filtering, port blocking) , the router should not cause you any issues with you Ring doorbell connecting. Could be the WiFi channels are causing the issue, and a simple restart the router may help.

What is double nat? Is it a problem?

@@vSOALv Double NAT is really not ideal. While your browsing and general internet won't be affected, Gaming, IoT devices, and other services behind your router NAT get very confused. You will have to open up NAT Rules/Firewall rules in both devices to allow correct connectivity. So Double NAT is not advised. Return TCP Packets can get lost, or received out of sequence or in error. Avoid it if you can.

It's a good video, but totally outdated, I'm using a asus ax82u and what you suggested isn't the case. No longer have to use iptv, all under Wan now on asus and no form of bridging as it has a dsl port, so straight swap over

Hi, thanks for letting me know. Are you using BT? As you are correct this is a straight swap but for people with Cityfirbe you still need to go LAN - IPTV in the Asus router and input the VLAN 911.

@EclipseReviews I am on BT open reach, but again still shouldn't need to do iptv, as iptv is under lan section and not under wan. My understanding is city fibre will use wan so as long as you still log in with user and pass on pppoe and set the right vlan id it should still work. Alternatively I've not tried but as router hs a wan socket, you probably wouldn't need to set pppoe at all. I also found you can request static ip and that's what I have so makes connection so much easier when you know your own ip. I mean I maybe wrong in some aspects bit I'm hoping city fibre will take over my area and I will test it then but atm BT open reach and my way works a treat. I also found with vodafone router if your kicked off you have to log into admin hub to verify the connection, happens alot on my dad's wifi. Only pc will let you log in, I found mobile devices wouldn't work regardless of the right pass being entered. To me this is a poor design in eyes of the router. I have ordered a 3rd party router for him and be doing the same thing as I have done.

@AnotherBoring43yearold hey there, not sure in what you are trying to do. If you are trying to bridge by connecting router to the hub, i believe this is something you can not do with vodafone. It's either use your router or the hub. Depending on the connection I myself is part fibre so I use dsl, by getting my user and password from vodafone and connecting over pppoe with static ip. For full fibre, i would assume it would be connected to the Wan section of your router and try the setup, you may still need to get username and password. Until I am full fibre in my area I'm not 100% as i can not try this yet, but as soon as I am I will be doing it via my router so will definitely try and get a better explanation.

So, if you're on FTTP why can't you go direct from the ONT box to a 3rd party router? I wouldn't bother if you've got digital voice, just leave it and use the standard ISP provided router and use the Asus in AP mode, pointless having two routers routing, creating a double NAT environment and amount of cables etc.

I still old fashioned and use my home phone line, so need to double NAT. But has not really caused any issues and everything still works fine. If vodafone would give customers the VoIP credentials then I could just use my Asus router :)

A simpler connection would be lan to lan but then you would have to turn off dhcp on 3rd party router, and keep Nat on on vodafone router. You would have to set static IP address for 3rd party router of course on same subnet as Vodafone router. Double Nat would not apply. Of course, you should still turn off wifi on vodafone hub (unless the two routers are quite a distance apart). Of course connecting as per video, it theoretically adds a bit of extra security using double nat but how much is debatable. One thing missing from video was explaining LAn on 3rd party router would be on a different subnet 192,168.xx.yy where xx is not 52. YY is whatever you decide. I am going to test Lan-Lan and Lan-Wan and see if it affect performance.

Vodafone is DHCP but with 3rd party routers you need special login details, this may be specific to Cityfibre.

If you're connecting direct to the ONT box from a 3rd party router it's DHCP, the ONT box is the modem you just need the username and password. This setup basically a double NAT environment. Which you don't want.

You can use a FSX SIP adapter such as the Grand Stream HT801 for the phone, you don't need the vodafone router. You will need to ask Vodafone for your VoIP details these are SIP username, SIP password, SIP URI, SIP Proxy and SIP registrar server. You will need to escalate to 2nd level tech support to get this.

Many thanks for your help, for many years I have been with NTL / VirginMedia and it's been great. It was the best option in the area as NTL infrastructure was put in when the estate was built. In the last few years CityFibre have installed their infrastructure so I have several options (NOTE: as we were with NTL / VirginMedia for many years we have a NON VoIP telephone with VM). Also for some long time I have used the SuperHub in Modem Mode with a TP-Link Archer A7 router (no modem). The only reason to move away from VM is cost depending on negotiating with VM but they don't give competitive prices. With your help it looks like I should opt to go the 2nd option and keep the Vodafone router and use the Archer A7? Location of the Vodafone router will be an issue as the VM Superhub is located at the back on the house in the office (unless the installers will cable around to the back) Ido have a complex network setup with a 24 port PoE switch in the loft. Any advice would be appreciated.

You could please the 3rd Party router to the Vodafone router via Powerline adapters this will help with you having the routers in different locations and still connected at good speeds.

Deliberately setting up a double NAT arrangement is really unnecessary. You can just get a switch and something like a UniFi access point. They can be set up with a smartphone on the app
